I want to buy a sewing machine to start quilting and making my daughter dresses (disney style). The problem is that I don't know what to get. I haven't sewn in 20 + years so I will say I am a beginner. I want a machine that doesn't cost more than $150 and is easy to use. Any suggestions?

I've heard alot of positives about some of the Brother machines, so if you want to go brand new that would be my suggestion also.

If you'd like to get something upper-end, check Craigslist or your local dealers for Pfaff, Viking, Bernina, etc, as they often have trade-ins at good deals or people looking to sell their machines to upgrade.

I've had a Singer for years and years, but the newer singers (last 10 years or so) are nothing like they used to be. Now I have a Bernina and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The higher end machines definitely make sewing easier.

I use a Husquvarna/Viking, but it is an embroidery machine too, so quite expensive. My best advice would be to get the best machine you can afford. If you get a cheapo one, you will have trouble and then you will not enjoy sewing. Go to your local dealers and see what they have in trade in. You might get a good deal on a great machine.
