Sewing Machine

I hope someone here can help me. I don't sew but my mom wants a new sewing machine and well, mother's day is around the corner. I don't have a clue what to look for. I'm looking to spend around $150-$175. Can I get her a decent machine for that? Any recommendations on brand or models?

my recomendation is to get a gift certificate to a place that sells sewing machines and then let her go and try them out before she buys. Sewing machines are very personal. Depending upon what kind of sewing she does (quilting, garment making, etc.) and what types of stiches she will use.
Just a thought.

BTW I have a viking designer I. I do alot of quilting, craft making, and embroidery. I love my machine and i think viking machines are easy to use and very duriable.
