severe astigmatism contacts cost?

I also have severe astigmatism. I was recently fitted for contacts because I wanted them for my wedding. I was first given contacts that are the extreme moisture type because my eyes are very dry. These were $90 for a 3 month supply. After my success with those the Dr. advised I try the custom contacts for severe astigmatism because the first pair I was given was not strong enough for me. So I was going to try those until they gave me the price... $400 for a 3 month supply!
I am told that my astigmatism is worse than 99% percent of the people who have it so maybe your DDs won't be as bad!

and you were able to get soft contacts? I might have to revisit wearing contacts again - I have an astigmatism, and have been told in the past that I couldn't wear soft lenses. I had gas permeable contacts 20 years ago and HATED them.

Yes- they are soft, disposale (30 days) The doctor told me that if this was a few years ago she wouldn't have prescribed contacts for my DD as they would have been the hard kind and kids usually don't do well with those. But they are making advances all the time with astigmatism contacts.

The dosctor told me we got really lucky, because sometimes it is hard to get to 20/20 vision with the astig. contacts- but DD is seeing 20/20. Also some people complain of frequent blurring and DD hasn't had that at all, either.

This is her scrip- if that helps:
sphere : R +4.50 L +4.00
cylinder: R -3.25 L -2.75
axis: R 19 L 170

I have severe astigmatism in both eyes and wore gas permeables for about 20 years. Last year I was able to switch to soft contacts (Toric 55)----so wonderful :)

For the op, my custom ordered contacts take 3-4 weeks to come in.

that's fantastic news! I'll have to look into it!

Congrats to your DD, I'm sure she's thrilled to have contacts! :)

I just ordered contacts - I used the cooper vision torics. One eye is regular torics and I think that is about $40 per box and the other eye is custom made torics from the same company and they are about $80 per box. This is for six lens per box to be worn one month each.

Bad astigmatism over here too! I get mine at Wally World and it's just over $100 for 6 months for both eyes (monthly). This is FAR less than 5 years ago when I was paying $200 PER EYE for 6 months EEK!

I have the Focus 55's

This is me exactly! I have severe astigmatism, also need toric lenses, and my eyes just suck the moisture right out of the contacts. I have given up because of the cost. :guilty:

Great! I am glad you are getting them for her. I got mine when I was 13, it was a great confidence boost. :cheer2:

For those of you with bad vision, if you want to pass out, price lasik for your eyes. Mine was three treatments at $1200 per treatment for a total of $3600! No guarantee of 20/20 vision. Give me a BREAK!

I have an astigmatism & just ordered Bausch & Lomb PureVision Toric lenses. They are really comfortable. There was a $60 rebate for ordering a year's supply.

I want to say that I paid $175 & then will get the $60 rebate, but I can't be positive because I can't remember for sure!

I see (no pun intended!) that the OP has her questions answered so I'll just add my experiences for others...

I have astigmatism as well and have struggled with seeing clearly while wearing soft contacts. I've been wearing bausch & Lomb soflens torics for 2 years now and like them over the Focus toric. Even they aren't extended wear, my doc has given me the "ok" to sleep in them and I've not had any problems. Although they aren't custom made for my eyes and sometimes, I notice the shadows/double vision, I'm happy with them.

I pay $35 for a box of 6. With the focus toric, I was paying $70 for a box of 6.

My DS 11 has a strabismus in his right eye and poor vision. He REALLY wants contacts so last summer I took him to the eye doctor. They did a fitting but his doctor told him that his vision would be quite poor with the contacts :confused3 and the cost was well over $300 a pair :scared1:

Uh, $300 for poor vision? Back to glasses for DS. I feel bad for him. It's terrible when we go to the water parks because he has to walk around blind. And snorkling on our Disney cruise last year was pointless because he couldn't see a thing without his glasses. Makes me sad.

I am sorry for your son. FYI- we got that news from the first doctor that we asked about contacts. DD also has strbismus (very mild now due to treatment) If the strabismus is bad and the glasses help to correct it while the glasses are on, I think the contacts won't work for aligning the eyes.

Anyway- we went to an eye doctor when she was 10 years old and asked about contacts, after the exam he the astigmatism is too severe it would cost a fortune and wouldn't correct her vision very well... A few months later, I had a conversation with another mom from the school who is an eye doctor. She said that one of her specialties is fitting contacts for astigmatism and has done it for many people who were told by other doctors, "No way- your astigmatism is too severe for contacts." Sure enough, she did it- and it worked out great.

Not to try get to your hopes up- but maybe sometime in the future you can try and find a doctor who says that they specialize in fitting contacts for severe astigmatism. Good luck.

Wow, I didn't even know they made soft contacts for people with astigmatism. I've been wearing gas-perm lenses for the past 20 years (but haven't seen the eye dr. in a couple years, I obviously need to go). However, after seeing the costs mentioned I'll probably just stick with what I have. They're all I've ever known so I'm completely used to them, and my only cost is cleaning and soaking solutions, which I usually manage to get pretty cheaply.

For me, it's not even the question of the cost of Lasik. It's that it really is a relatively new procedure, medically, and so there hasn't been time to know the long-term effects of it----in 40 years, will people be going blind? I've personally known 2 people who had RK (remember that one?) who had major problems, one had retinal detachment in both eyes that the doctor told her was directly from the RK. Luckily they were able to save her vision.

I have spoken to several medical and eye doctors, and the funny thing is that every one of them has the same viewpoint---it's too new still. So I'll deal with my glasses and contacts. My vision is just too important!

A years worth of contacts (12 contacts for each eye) used to cost 300+$ from the opthalmologist. Went to Sam's and got it for 1/2 the cost!!!!!!
Good Luck and Do What's right for you.

A question for those of you using disposables--what kind of soaking/cleaning solutions do you have to buy? Or do you even clean them?

DH is wanting to get contacts and I have no experience with the disposables, just my gas perms.

Used to use Reno No Rub (but always rubbed them good). Switched to Walmart brand no rub...(still rubbing:rotfl: ) Again- 1/2 the cost!
Good Luck and Do What's right for you.
