Was swimming ever allowed in the Seven Seas Lagoon? Why is it not allowed, is it because of boat traffic? Not that I would want to swim there, I just noticed on some sites that it is really specific that there is a beach but no swimming in the lake.
Can anyone answer this trivial Disney question?

there is no swimming anymore in the seven seas. i was told the is too much bacteria from all the food, toys, and other stuff thrown off the boats. i asked a few years ago when they made it permenant i used to swim in the lake when i first started going there it was nice. i wish i still could sometimes but you still have the pools.

The rumors are that the decision to close Seven Seas Lagoon to swimming was made due to the bacteria that grows in these types of bodies of water. I believe it is a cancer causing bacteria. Studies have been done on this for years, so I guess that Disney ended the swimming as a precaution. I remember when I was a kid swimming the lagoon - we always had a lagoon view room at the Poly and I'd walk right out and swim.

There was a lawsuit a few years back, where a child had a small parasitic ameba entered through either the nose, or ear while swimming in the lake. After that the waterways where closed to swimming, because it did cause a serious if not fatal infection.

That's also why River County is closed...this ameba lives in all lakes in Florida I believe.

Habitat - Ameba live in most types of fresh water sources such as ponds, lakes, and streams. Plus sometimes they can live in moist soil. They can also live in dry condition by with drawing into a thick walled crystal, which it forms around its self.

Life cycle - Amebas reproduce when they are full grown. They do this by having their nucleus and protoplasm divide in to two daughter cells. The ameba can also live as long a two hours without a nucleus.

If anyone else remembers anything about this case please post...and correct me if I have the wrong information.

Hey, I actually found out the real live official reason for this!

Florida statute prohibits public bathing in a body of water with less than four feet of visability. There was an article in the Orlando Sentinal that referenced this a week or two ago, if I can find it, I'll post the link.

Thanks, guys! Now I will look like a smarty pants when we stay at the Poly this summer and I know why the kids can't swim in the lagoon!:wave2:
