Welcome aboard me hearties! This be a bit of Disney therapy for yours truly now that our epic adventure has concluded. So climb aboard, sit close together and keep your ruddy hands in board. That be the best way to repel boarders. Wait, we are in 2020 so scratch sitting close together, leave 6 feet between you and other parties please.

Our adventure actually begins a year ago Christmas Day 2019. My wife and I had just revealed via an epic Christmas morning scavenger hunt to my 4 kids that their Christmas present for 2019 was a Marvel Day at Sea cruise out of Miami in early January 2020. It was our first ever cruise and first chance trying something different for our Disney fix after many family trips to Disneyland. You can read all about that epic adventure in my first trip report: Our First Ever Disney Cruise Was Magical, Marvel-ous, and Magnificent! (Disney Magic out of Miami with MDAS) Completed 2/19

I say our trip began there because it was our first time doing a vacation for Christmas as our primary gift. My kids had so much fun on our first cruise that they all said they wanted to do it for Christmas again next year. So shortly upon returning home I found a great 5 night Very Merry Time cruise on the Magic again out of Miami for a week before Christmas. We used our placeholder and had it booked, we were going from me never wanting to cruise to two cruises in 2020. At that point Covid was making a little news but not anything we figured would impact our plans. My parents even decided to join our cruise.

Of course then the world changed. Shortly after entering lockdown my company decided to close the office I was based out of and I found myself looking for work. I wondered if this would be the end of our vacation plans. Fortunately I was extremely blessed to quickly find a much better career opportunity through my network. So after a couple stressful weeks I was employed by a company doing really well despite all that was happening. I was optimistic that everything would blow over by summer at the latest. Summer came, my parents cancelled but I was sure by fall cruising would resume. Airlines were offering great deals with extra flexibility so we booked flights in early July. Because airfare was cheaper and it gave us some other options we booked flights to Orlando planning to spend a few days there relaxing at a Marriott resort, visiting Disney Springs and then drive to Miami for the cruise. We did something similar last time and found the drive to be a non issue. We paid in full for our cruise getting a bit more nervous but still holding out hope. We also booked opening day a Fall 2021 7 night Mexican Rivera out of San Diego as a backup. We wanted to try the Wonder and not having to fly would give us the chance to do a bit longer cruise.

Of course before too much longer our December Very Merry Time cruise was cancelled and we found ourselves stuck with a tough decision. Take the 125% credit or get all our money back and lose our placeholder 10% discount? We had talked about possibly pivoting to do Disney World instead of our cruise as we had seen it was open. People seemed to feel safe and enjoy it. Ultimately we decided we really needed to get away. I am very much a travel motivated person. I work hard for the privilege of getting away and seeing the world, it's how I chose to spend my money and I was struggling with the lack of travel for the year. The last few years I've had business trips in addition to going somewhere with the family but 2020 brought an end to all of that. We did camp a couple nights during the summer which was fun but a ton of work. I wanted to go somewhere to escape from reality that would provide lots of ready made entertainment for the whole family. So we decided to get the refund and pivot to a Disney World trip. The credit was appealing but we just had no idea at this point when cruising would resume and didn't want to just wait.

At this point I'll add my wife and I spent part of our honeymoon at Disney World back in 2006. That was the last time either of us have been there. We both had been a couple times prior to that. Living on the west coast though we started going with our kids to Disneyland and hadn't had a reason to go back. Things changed a couple years after our honeymoon with all the new fast pass reservations and the amount of planning just never appealed to us. Not when we were a decent drive from Disneyland and we liked it so much.

So I started looking into Disney World options. I would have liked to stay on property but there aren't a ton of options for a family of 6 without getting two rooms. I found a couple but they were surprisingly expensive to me. Also so many of the benefits of staying on property aren't available in this covid world. I also started comparing prices if I stayed at a Marriott property. I have titanium status with Marriott and I was going to save a ton of money if I took one of the promotions they were offering me. So we ultimately ended up extending the original reservation I had made at Marriott's Harbor Lake. The decision to stay here was honestly based on how cool the pool looked and the fact we could get a two bedroom villa for a really good rate. Normally when we go to Disneyland we leverage my Marriott perks and stay at one of the walking distance Marriott brands with a family suite that can accommodate 6, there are several of them. This would be our first time trying a Marriott Vacation Club property (their time share brand). You don't get all your perks when you go to one but it looked like a great set up for our family and the kids were super excited by the pool photos. I'll give my review of it later but hint we really liked it.

Now I really love when we go to Disneyland we can park at the hotel and I generally do very little driving until we drive home. There is something magical about being in that Disney bubble the whole time and we just can walk everywhere. I realized that would not be the case here given we weren't staying on property. I did run the numbers on the rental car cost and the cost of parking at Disney World, parking at our hotel was free. I was still saving a ton of money over staying on property so it was going to be worth it and I'd just deal with driving. Given the current Covid situation I felt having our own transportation and being able to remove our masks in the car might be nice and it was.

Our airfare was originally based on finding cheaper days to fly that gave us some pre time before our cruise. Now that we weren't cruising we had the option of adjusting dates. We needed to decide what we intended to do. We wanted to visit Universal to see the Harry Potter areas as we are big Harry Potter fans. We also wanted to see every Disney World park. I went and investigated ticket options and we ended up settling on 5 day Disney World tickets and buy 2 get 2 free promotion at Universal. Looking at our airfare dates we could do 5 days at Disney, have a resort day and do 2 days at Universal. We wouldn't fly out until evening of our last day and could use one of our free Universal days to do a partial day there. So we decided we would avoid the stress of changing flights and we could make it all work with our existing dates. It would maybe be a bit packed but we'd have one down day at the resort. At this point hours both at Disney and Universal were also rather short. We wouldn't be doing the long Disneyland days we were used to. Of course by the time we went hours had been extended a fair amount.

As I was considering our hotel I did want the ability to get a late checkout our last day given our late flight. I'm technically guaranteed a late checkout with my status but it does not apply at vacation club properties. I also had a free night certificate I couldn't use there that was expiring and I wasn't sure if Marriott would extend it. So I decided to do a split stay. We'd check out of the nice 2 bedroom villa and I found a 2 queen studio with a sofa bed that would sleep 6 at a brand new Westin Element that just opened in the summer. I haven't stayed at Element before but now that it is part of the Marriott family and being a brand new hotel I figured we'd try it. They'd accept my certificate and I had enough points to add 3 more nights. So I decided to do a total of 4 nights there and overlapped it so we'd technically have two hotel rooms one night. I wanted that so we could move our stuff and have access to the new room early and not have to interrupt a park day, this ended up working out great. It was a smaller room but for a couple nights we'd make do.

So there you have it, we had our plans made, treasure map in hand, and we were ready to set sail. I think it was end of September, early October everything was figured out. Our kids were disappointed they wouldn't get their planned Christmas cruise but they were excited for Disney World and Universal instead. I knew from our Disneyland trips it wouldn't be the relaxing we fell in love with on our first DCL cruise but it would still be a ton of fun and much needed. My wife usually makes trip t shirts. However in 2020 t shirts would be swapped for custom themed masks. She volunteered early in the pandemic as part of a big service project to make masks for medical workers. They supplied the materials and patterns and she sewed. She made a copy of the pattern and made us a ton of masks all summer long to ensure we had them for work, school, shopping etc. So she went looking for material both at local stores and online and started ensuring we'd have Disney and Harry Potter themed masks for our trip. I mention that now as all the masks you see in our photos were made by my awesome wife.

Of course the hardest part of any trip is the waiting as it approaches. We had some excitement as we hit the 60 day mark to make ADRs and made several. I had a chance to fly for a short business trip the end of October. Gave me a chance to scope out flying in the world of Covid. Also gave me a chance to see our new airport terminal that had just been opened and be prepared to guide my family through it. I should probably add that when we originally planned this trip our 3 youngest kids were supposed to be out of school from Thanksgiving to Christmas because they go to year round school and that was their assigned break cycle. Only my oldest would have to miss school and she is a good student and we were sure we could work it out with her teachers. Of course Covid changed things and they moved the school to a traditional schedule because they weren't ready for it to restart the end of July as it normally would. This means my kids would be missing school but the school said they'd be flexible since they changed things and the whole year is a bit of a mess anyway.

As we hit the week of Thanksgiving we all went into our own quarantine as my biggest fear was someone getting sick before our trip. We were being careful anyways but we made sure we had what we needed from the store, we weren't seeing family anyways and I stopped going into the office. Most of my company works remote right now but I was going into the office fairly regularly due what some of my team does and the fact I like the separation of work and home. Everyone is socially distanced, wearing masks and doing all the things we do now plus it is pretty empty most days. Nevertheless I didn't want to risk any sort of exposure before we left so we went into our bubble two weeks before leaving.

Finally the big day was here! Everyone was healthy and we were ready for a much needed vacation! The trip to the airport and the flight out was uneventful. Before we knew it we were here in the MCO tram. I will add for our flight we opted for medical masks we had in our basement for years. I certainly never expected we'd be wearing them on a trip to Disney. We opted for the potential extra protection they offered for our trip through airports and the flight.

After we checked into our hotel we had a dinner reservation in Disney Springs at Paradiso 37. How often do you get this much personal space at a restaurant?

546321

After dinner we went and bought our magic bands. I thought it would be nice to have our tickets on them and we thought we could find more options if we bought them at Disney Springs. We didn't spend too long though as we had a busy day planned for tomorrow. Our first day would be at Hollywood Studios which meant being up bright and early to try and score a Rise of the Resistance Boarding Pass.

I realized I forgot two things from my first post. The first is a quick review of Paradiso 37. We had never eaten there before and I kind of just stumbled upon it when looking for Disney Springs restaurants with reservations. The appetizer menu looked good and a review I read seemed to suggest the same. So we got a bunch of appetizers to try, kids ate nachos and everyone was quite happy with the food. It wasn't spectacular but it was good. What made it even better is they give a discount to Disney Visa cardholders, I think it was like 20% which was great. I'm not dying to go back but I would certainly eat there again.

The second thing is I meant to give a quick review of our hotel. We really liked it. We had a two bed room villa which had a king in one bedroom, two queens in the other, and then a sofa bed meaning it could sleep 8. There were two bathrooms along with a full kitchen and eating/common area. It also had in room washer/dryer which was super nice. I went that first night to the local Winn Dixie and we had food for breakfast in our room every morning. My kids are pretty big about eating something first thing and it was nice to have the kitchen. We could tell when we got into the room they had done a deep cleaning. All the TV remotes were sealed in bags and it felt clean which is important in 2020. The staff were all great and I'd love to stay there again.

Wednesday December 9th

The morning of our first park day though the main event was trying to obtain one of the elusive Rise of the Resistance boarding groups. I ran a quick speed test on the hotel wifi and found it to be good. The cell signal in the room wasn't great. So I made sure I was connected to the wifi and ready to go well before the 7 am time. When we were there you could get the first boarding groups from anywhere at 7 am. I really liked this change versus having to be in the park, I think it made the morning far less stressful. So I set an alarm to ensure I wasn't distracted getting ready for the day and refreshed right at 7am and we got a boarding group!

546455

Group 94 was probably one of the last ones given out but it was a group and we were super excited!

The park was scheduled to open a 9 AM and I planned to get there right about 8am hoping to hit the parking lot as it opened. We were in the park and in line for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway right at 8:28 AM. We decided to rope drop knowing we weren't alone because the line didn't look too bad and it was one of the big headliners my kids really wanted to do. The line wasn't bad we were on the ride at like 8:43 AM. I took notes on most of our wait times because I was really curious to track what they would be compared to posted times.

This photo was from later in the day but is fitting here. We did do a Memory Maker package and took full advantage of having Photo Pass Photographers take our pictures. It is hard right now with cast members not being able to touch your phones and it being awkward to ask strangers as well. We wanted to have photos to remember this unique trip and were really happy both with the quality and quantity of the photos we got.

Minnie and Mickey's was a fun ride, definitely different than anything else I can think of. I love how effectively they combined the projection effects with a ride going somewhere so it wasn't just a motion simulator.

After we decided to head for a galaxy far far away and visit Batuu before it got crowded. Now I have to say the visual impact of entering Galaxy's Edge for the first time is pretty incredible. This was our first time experiencing it as our last Disneyland trip was right before it opened there. We really wanted to try and fly the fastest hunk o' junk in the galaxy before the line got long so we tried to stay focused on where we needed to go.

546457

I don't recall seeing any PhotoPass photographers in Galaxy's Edge so either we missed them or they weren't there. We had to make due with selfies. We got in line for Smuggler's Run at 9:07 and were done by 9:31, not too bad. Both of the big headline attractions aside from Rise done 30 minutes after park opening.

I had one of the pilot seats and my oldest son the other. It was definitely cool but I think walking through the queue was almost as fun as the ride itself.

I thought the flight controls were a little weird and it wasn't clear to me how much real control you had at some points. Definitely glad we experienced it! I was open to prioritizing another ride so we could switch positions around but no one really cared to make it a priority to ride a second time.

Galactic smuggling though does work up a thirst and my DS really wanted to try some green milk so we stopped for some. This was one thing I found to be a challenge throughout our trip. Normally you'd stop to get a drink, snack etc and drink/eat it as you walk to your next adventure. With the current mask rules you have to remain stationary to remove your mask to eat or drink. I totally get why but it means stopping and taking time which is even harder if you are drinking a cold icee drink given the brain freeze potential. We got extra straws and let everyone try some. I didn't like it at all but my son enjoyed it at least well enough to finish it. To me it tasted like a skittle smoothie. I like skittles but would never want them in a smoothie.

Wanting to take full advantage of the lower wait times in the morning we said goodbye to Batuu and shrunk ourselves to the size of toys. Our adventures in Toy Story Land will have to wait though for my next update.

Toy Story Land is really well themed. I loved the Christmas decorations especially the audio track. They have conversations between the different characters about their decorating efforts and it was super fun to listen to in line. Speaking of which our first stop was the line for Slinky Dog Dash. We got in line at 9:52 AM for what was supposed to be a 70 minute wait. We were done though at 10:36 so 45 minutes. It was a fun ride but nothing incredible. I like Big Thunder Mountain from a ride perspective more. However the theming and queue are really fun. 547290

After a ride on Slinky Dog we headed over to Midway Mania. It is always one of my favorite rides at California Adventure. The Disney World version seemed pretty much the same. It was a 30 minute wait though posted at 50 minutes. Most lines seemed to come under the posted wait throughout our trip. I did fairly well and more importantly enjoyed it as always.

At this point it was about time for lunch. Our first thought was Woody's Lunch Box. I pulled it up on the app to mobile order and discovered the first available pick up time wasn't for several hours. That was unexpected, I didn't realize mobile orders would fill up like that. I decided to go scout out other eating options while the family rode Alien Spinning Saucers. It's similar to Mater's Junkyard Jamboree in California Adventure which I do enjoy but I was okay missing. I was interested to see if we could join the virtual waitlist for any of the table service options but the app was acting kind of weird. So I went to ask at the Brown Derby and confirmed there were no spots available.
We ended up deciding to eat at the ABC Commissary. Mobile order there was convenient and we found a table without too much effort. I would have preferred one of the outdoor ones but there weren't many and they were very sought after. Food was pretty good. I tried the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich with a side salad. I enjoyed it. Others got the Pork Tacos and liked them. I can't remember what the youngest tried off the kids menu. I liked that they had water cups just waiting at the drink station so they were easy to get.

After lunch everyone wanted to go ride Tower of Terror and Rockin Roller Coaster. Unfortunately I suffer from motion sickness and have to avoid rides with inversions. Normally big drops don't bother me but the sickest I've gotten was riding the Guardians of the Galaxy ride at California Adventure. The up and down motion just got to me. I know Tower of Terror isn't quite as much up and down but I didn't really feel like risking it. So everyone headed off to ride and I decided to try exploring Galaxy's Edge a bit more.

547297

What I found was that it really wasn't built for social distancing. I wanted to wander through the shops but almost all of them had lines to get in. I was able to walk through Droid Depot but didn't want to wait for the others. While the land is really well themed I felt the current Covid restrictions took a lot away from the experience. It was hard to feel immersed with lines everywhere and the lack of characters. I was still a bit hungry and was curious, so I did stop by to see how food prepared over a pod racer engine tastes.

547298

I liked my Ronto Wrap but it wasn't anything I'm craving again.

After the family rode Tower of Terror I went to meet up. My youngest isn't tall enough for Rockin Roller Coaster and my other son didn't really want to ride. So I headed off with my boys and we got a few photos.
547299

My youngest saw something in a shop earlier in the day he wanted to spend some of his trip money on. He still wanted it so we went back to get it. After I felt some Micky Bars were in order and we got to watch a couple character cavalcades while we enjoyed them.

After the girls finished their ride we decided to head over to Mickey and Minnie's again. Everyone wanted to give it another ride and the wait time wasn't horrid at an hour plus we suspected it would be less. As we were in line we saw this:

547304

I've never seen skywriting before. I thought the airspace above Disney World was restricted so I'm kind of surprised someone was able to fly so close. At any rate it was fun to watch while in line. Our wait was only like 35 minutes.
We enjoyed our second ride on the Runaway Railway.

547305

After that we were notified it was the time we'd been waiting for. The Resistance needed our help! Boarding group 94 was called just before 4. We headed over and had a short wait before our adventure began.

Unfortunately we ran into the First Order and had a few issues.
547306

The force was with us though and we were able to escape. I will say Rise of the Resistance is the awesomest ride I've ever been on. It was seriously cool and worth the effort to ride! It is definitely a game changer.

After Rise I unfortunately had a voicemail I had to return while the rest of the family rode Star Tours. The day was winding down but there was one thing I wanted my kids to experience. I've always been a big Muppets fan and they've never experienced Muppets 3D. So we went and watched the show. My kids grumbled a bit that it would be boring but afterwords they all were glad I made them experience it.

After that closing time was nearly upon us. We wandered a bit to look at the Christmas decorations all light up at night. We stopped for a picture or two.

547308

I really did like how much they decorated Hollywood Studios. My younger kids were ready to go so I walked them to the car while my oldest really wanted to go see the projections on the Tower of Terror for a minute.

Our first Disney World Day was done. It had been a good one. We got to ride everything we wanted and Mickey and Minnie's twice. Doing a Disney park during Covid while different was still a lot of fun. We wanted to get everyone back and in bed because tomorrow was Magic Kingdom and they opened at 8am. We wanted to be sure to be up and ready to rope drop.

Great start! We also have four kids and know how difficult traveling with a family of 6 can be sometimes. Looking forward to reading more!

Alright I'm trying to fight some PDD (Post Disney Depression), I'm sure most on this group can identify. It is fun to have a Disney trip to look forward to, more fun to be on it but coming home is always hard. Fortunately 10 months from today we are supposed to be boarding the Disney Wonder. So I have something to look forward to though I'm trying to be cautious since we still have no idea when cruising will really resume. I'd say we are safe but I thought that before. I'm choosing to remain cautiously optimistic about it.

Anyhow I thought I'd tackle our next day's adventure to remind me how much fun this trip was. We woke early on Thursday 12/10 for our first Magic Kingdom day. Disney World hours were extended multiple times before our trip and now the park was opening at 8am. I looked at the reservation calendar and Magic Kingdom was "sold out" a day or two before so I figured it would be busy and we definitely would want to rope drop. We generally try to be one of the first families in line at Disneyland. We love how magical mornings in the park can be. That and at home my kids are frequently up at 6am or earlier, we are all early risers. We got to the parking plaza and were second in our lane, they weren't allowing us to enter yet but didn't make us go around either. It was perfect timing.
547550

Of course as a train lover I was not complaining we had to ride this from the parking lot. We even got the orange one, my favorite color. The monorail wait wasn't too bad considering the social distancing requirements. I was disappointed that the Epcot line wasn't running. One of my favorite things during my WDW trips years ago was just riding the monorail around and enjoying the view. Since the Disney World railroad is currently closed for an extended period the monorail was my only Disney train option available. I'm a lot like Walt I suppose in that I love trains, especially Disney trains.

I had debated what to do first upon arrival. We've rope dropped Peter Pan and Fantasyland at Disneyland which seems to be quite popular. On our more recent trips though we found heading to the left gave us access to really short waits for some of our favorite attractions. This morning though we decided to just follow the crowds and rope drop Seven Dwarves Mine Trains since it is one of the unique rides we really wanted to experience. We were in line at like 7:45 AM and off at 8:16, 15 minutes after official park open which I didn't think was too bad.

547552

I enjoyed the ride but don't know that I'd wait over an hour for it. It is certainly fun but nothing revolutionary.

After the mine train we decided to go hit all our favorites. We walked on Haunted Mansion. I actually liked the MK version a bit better than the DL variation. The very first part of the ride in the doom buggies is different with the library. I also thought the ride photos were really cool. Maybe those have been added to DL since we last went I don't know.547553

After haunted we had like a 30 minute wait for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, another family favorite. This is another place it was fun to compare MK vs DL. The queue in MK has more story and I found more interesting with all the mining equipment and storyline. Most of the DL queue is just outside through the rock work. They do have the cool explosion effects in DL that are lacking from the MK variation. However I didn't miss them as much as I thought I might. In the end I'd call both BTMRR variations I've ridden a lot of fun and probably a tie. I hear the one in Disneyland Paris though has some really cool features I'd love to experience.

After the "Wildest Ride in the Wilderness" we had to hit up a family favorite. My favorite Disneyland ride has long been Splash Mountain. I really enjoy log flume rides. My kids enjoy it as well, it ranks number one for a couple of them too. Our last DL trip I was so excited that everyone in the family was tall enough to ride. The DL logs also seat 6 so the ride photos were just our family. The MK version does fit more but with social distancing we still got our own family logs. I will say that the MK version of Splash is better than the DL one in my opinion. I think the log design is better, there is an extra drop I believe, and I think the animatronics/story telling is better.

We are aware that the theming to Splash Mountain is set to be changed in the not too distant future. Personally I only know the story of Briar Rabbit and friends from the ride, I've never seen Song of the South. However I get the issue and why Disney needs to change it. I love Splash Mountain but I also really love Princess and the Frog, it's a great movie with awesome music. My wife is originally from Houston and makes great gumbo and beignets so we identify with the food part of the movie too. I'm excited to see one of my favorite rides get a fresh perspective based on one of my favorite Disney films. However it also meant we wanted to ride Splash a lot because this would likely be our last chance before the change. So this was just the first of many rides this trip.

547564

After Splash we headed to Pirates of the Caribbean which was only about a 30 minute wait. Pirates at MK is definitely not as cool as the DL version but it is still a favorite ride. We should have been pirates in the Caribbean ourselves for this trip. Pirates night on our DCL cruise was definitely one of the highlights and something we were looking forward to experiencing again. The ride would have to suffice this time though.

Somewhere in all this we got a few fun photos:

547565

547566

My notes show after Pirates we got to watch Mickey and Friends come by in one of the cavalcades. I have to say this was one of the fun Covid changes I hope stay. We rarely want to fight the crowds to get a spot for a parade. I loved these mini ones surprising us throughout the day.

We were all a little hungry and went looking for a snack. At Disneyland it seems you are never too far from a churro. I was a little disappointed at the snack options at Magic Kingdom. It seemed all we could find were popcorn carts, roasted nuts and ice cream bars. We settled for popcorn and nuts and the chance to watch Santa come by in his mini parade.

By this time it was just after 11 am and we had hit all our big favorites. Most of the family wanted to go ride Space Mountain. I've ridden it a few times and as I've gotten older I have more trouble with it being tight curves in the dark so I don't usually ride anymore. My DS didn't really want to ride it either so we headed to Buzz Lightyear while the rest did Space Mountain. Buzz took us about 30 minutes. This was another ride that I had to compare to DL. I quite enjoy it at DL but the way the guns were mounted in MK made it a lot less fun. My hand was left hurting and it just wasn't the same fun.

We all finished our rides about the same time and the kids wanted to try Autopia. Normally Autopia seems to have super long lines and I prefer to avoid it. However it was practically a walk on today. My older two got to drive themselves while my wife and I each took one of the younger ones and got to run the pedal while they drove.

After Autopia it was time for our ADR. I had scored reservations for the Liberty Tree Tavern at 12:30 PM. Having a break midday was perfect and I hoped a big meal would mean we wouldn't have to stop for dinner too early. We walked over and got to watch Santa come by again before it was time to go sit down. I rather liked the mobile check in process for dining reservations. It was super easy and we normally didn't have much of wait.

The food at Liberty Tree Tavern was great. It felt perfect for the holiday season. Turkey, roast, pork roast, mashed potatoes, stuffing, mac and cheese etc. They served it family style and we could get extra of anything we wanted. My kids really liked the mac and cheese and we had to ask for multiple additional portions. We definitely enjoyed the meal and dining experience. Feeling well fed we were ready for our next adventure.

This seems a good place to pause for now. Thinking about that meal has made me hungry.

 Hello! What an awesome start to your Trip Report!
We were in the same boat as you in November. :sail:Our Merrytime cruise was cancelled and we ended up extending our pre-cruise WDW stay to add a few more park days. We had a blast, but did not get lucky with Rise of the Resistance. We ended up rescheduling our cruise to February of 2022, so I think another try for Rise of the Resistance will be possible. Congratulations on scoring your boarding group! It looks like you had a great time at Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom!

After our delicious lunch we decided to work our way back to Fantasyland. We saw this cool photo op on the way.

547811

I thought it was cool to have the Haunted Mansion in the background. I also thought this shows the reality of crowds as well. There certainly were points where you had lots of people around and it felt like a "normal" day at Disney. We tend to visit during less busy times of the year so our "normal" I know is not as busy as it gets during peak season pre Covid. At the same time I have this photo from the morning.

547812

Of course mornings are almost always less busy but still we had some very magical moments where things were clearly less busy than normal. The wait times in general were good throughout the trip so I think this was very much a unique and hopefully not to be repeated way to experience Disney. By not to be repeated I mean I don't need another pandemic or anything like it in my lifetime.

Back to our trek through Fantasyland. We did Peter Pan with only a 25 minute wait mid afternoon. That is pretty well unheard of at Disneyland at least. It was fun to see what they've done with the queue at MK. It was really cool and something they don't have at DL though we felt a bit rushed through it. The ride itself seemed virtually identical but still one of my favorite dark rides.

After we had a 30 minute wait for Its a Small World which seemed a little long to me for that ride. Normally it loads pretty quick but with the social distancing in the boats I'm sure hourly capacity is down. I don't care much for the MK version. The exterior isn't as magical and the ride is missing all the hidden Disney characters. I normally enjoy Small World as a classic ride but I fully admit I fell asleep. This version just didn't engage me or I'm getting old and was tired.

Next up is one of my favorite MK only attractions, Philharmagic. I think it was brand new last time I was in WDW years ago. I'm a huge Donald Duck fan and it is as close to a true Donald attraction as there is. Everyone enjoyed it. I was wondering how these theater like attractions would work. They are separating rows and groups of seats. Our family of 6 had to split up. It felt very distanced and of course everyone is wearing masks so it felt comfortable.

Then we did Dumbo which was also a surprisingly short wait followed by Goofy's Barnstormer. Our last Fantasyland attraction was the Little Mermaid ride. I really like the theming around the attraction with Prince Eric and Ariel's castle. It put the MK version over the California Adventure version for me.

I'm used to all the holiday overlays that Disneyland does and was a little disappointed to learn WDW doesn't do. I was excited to hear that MK has at least one, the Jingle Cruise which was our next destination. The wait time for it was pretty consistently long all day. We decided we'd just have to wait the 40 minutes. I quite enjoyed the decorated queue area and the ride in general. It may be corny but I've always loved the Jungle Cruise and the Christmas variation was extra fun especially as it was dark as we road just after 6 or so. I also enjoyed the MK version with its Indian temple scene that is lacking in DL.

Everyone wanted to ride Splash Mountain again and I will say I love the view from the top at night. So we walked on Splash Mountain. At this point we were all getting tired so I suggested we sit down and watch the Country Bears. I grew up with Chuck E Cheese, and Bullwinkle's both of which featured animatronic characters and shows similar if not as well done as the Country Bears. So I was super excited for the show. The rest of the family maybe not so much but we all had a good time and it was good for my kids to experience it.

At this point we were a bit hungry but ran into a surprising challenge. There are not a lot of snack options especially late at MK right now. We didn't want Dole Whips, I really wanted a churro or a mickey pretzel but there none about. The one snack location across from us was already closed, it had super limited hours. I suspect part of the issue was Covid shutdowns but I also wonder if MK is just not up to the DL level for good snacks. At DL you have beignets, churros a plenty, fritters, gumbo in a bread bowl, lots of quick and easy snacks, okay maybe gumbo isn't a snack, but I've had it multiple times at the end of the night. We told the kids we'd just have to get something on the way home. We are almost at the 8pm close at this point.

We decided to just go catch another ride on Pirates to end the evening. At DL pirates is almost always our last ride so it felt "right" to carry on the tradition. We had like a 15 minute wait which was almost walk on. Oh I almost forgot the other reason for riding Pirates was that my youngest had spotted something else he wanted to spend his trip money on. We had different ways our kids could earn trip money before we left. Family also gave birthday and Christmas money early for them to have. We've learned they of course want the first thing they see. We have them think about their decisions most of the day to make sure they don't find something they like more. We had promised if he still wanted it he could get it before we left. I must say I think the Pirate Pluto with the keys in his mouth is a good choice and his sister found a pirate Minnie she liked. You can see them proudly displayed in this photo we got as we headed out.

Just to annoy the kids we stopped for another one. Actually we wanted to get a Christmas tree photo and there was no line.

It was a great day at the Magic Kingdom. We had stayed from open to close and everyone really did well and had a good time. However we needed to get back to bed because Animal Kingdom also opened early. The kids and parents were pretty tired though so we decided we would not rope drop it in the morning. When we do our DL trips we generally try and space out our park days so we don't have 3 in a row which can be exhausting especially with 4 kids. That wasn't really an option this trip so we had to find other ways to pace ourselves. Animal Kingdom has less rides so we figured it would be okay to get there a little bit later. It ended up being a good decision as the extra time in the morning really helped and sneak preview for my next update it didn't really affect our day.

So first week back after the holidays has been crazy. Not sure if I’ll get a trip report update posted later tonight or not. I did get to have a bit more WDW Magic today though. I ran the Virtual WDW Half Marathon today. I know many are sad marathon weekend went virtual this year. For me though it gave me a chance to run it I’m not sure I’ll have again. Yes I was willing to run 13.1 miles on a treadmill (it was 25 degrees outside) to get a Disney themed medal.

I still got a character photo and cheering from Captain Marvel! Training for it kept me running after the weather turned cold to stay ready after the other half’s I ran this fall. 2020 became the year I took up running and I’ve enjoyed it. I’m not sure I’ll do another treadmill half but I did sign up for the virtual Star Wars Rival weekend Kessel Run Challenge. Fortunately it should be warm enough I can do those races outside. Again I couldn’t turn down cool metals and motivation to keep running.

Okay I ended up with time so I will jump back into the trip report. When we last left our Disney World adventure we were ending a magical day in Magic Kingdom. We slept in a bit the next morning as we were all tired and we didn't think we'd have too much trouble doing everything at Animal Kingdom. We arrived at the park sometime after 9 AM. It opened at 8 AM so we weren't that late but that little bit of extra sleep sure helped.

549105

We liked the Christmas tree out front. They also had this cool little photo spot.

549106

I think the kids got a bit annoyed we kept stopping for photos but we figured we might as well get them done when walking by and there was no line. We quickly discovered the Photo Pass Photographers at Animal Kingdom like you making claws with your hands.

549108

They also had some fun magic shots

After this we walked right on the Safari. I wanted to try it in the morning because I suspected the animals would be more active and I was right. We saw more animals than I remember the last time we were here, granted it was many years ago. Here are a few highlights:

549111

Not the best picture but as Lions are my favorite i was glad I got to see them.

549112

549114

The elephants were out and about getting their day going.

549116

This photo doesn't capture it but we watched while this and another young giraffe ran all over the savannah. Our driver kept us there for a bit watching them play which was really cool.

549117

549119

You don't see Hippos out of water very often, I thought catching them before the heat was awesome.

I highly recommend doing the Safari first thing. It was so fun to see all the animals out and about. I especially enjoyed it after watching the Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom series on Disney plus. I'll pause here so I don't get into trouble with photo limits.

After the safari everyone wanted to head over to Everest.
549121

Last time I was here Expedition Everest was brand new. I remember waiting in a very long line to ride. This time it had a posted 15 minute wait but we basically walked on, it was just under 10 minutes. I knew I was risking it a bit to ride with my motion sickness sensitivity. The backwards segment in the corkscrew just did a number on me. I survived but definitely felt it.

549126

Salty snacks help me so we paused and got a pretzel. I think it was a Mickey Pretzel but I saw they have Simba pretzels too I think. So maybe it was that but regardless it was good, we all shared it. I will say I felt the snacks were leaps and bounds better at Animal Kingdom than anywhere we had been so far. I also just love how well themed all the buildings were. Animal Kingdom is by far my favorite WDW park from a theming, food and overall experience perspective. It also different from anything on the west coast.

After the snack stop we walked on Kali River Rapids. We were a little worried about getting soaked but we really didn't get all that wet at all. This experience would put us off guard when we head to Universal the next day. Everyone had a good time though. After we decided to go ride Dinosaur. It was only like 11 am. Despite not rope dropping we had gotten three headline attractions done, taken lots of pictures, and had a snack. Things were going well. We had a bit of a walk over to Dinoland and the line said it would take us 35 minutes but it was closer to 15. I didn't really like Dinosaur too much, Indiana Jones at DL is much better.

549127

After returning to the future we decided it was time for lunch. We had another bit of a walk as I really wanted to eat at Saluli Canteen. Visiting Pandora was one of the things I was most looking forward to. It is such an amazing land. I will admit I never watched Avatar. A few weeks before the trip I decided to watch it while running on the treadmill so I had some context. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it as a movie though I didn't think it was incredible from a story perspective. I've read or seen plenty of similar story lines in other sci fi stories. Nevertheless it was a graphically impressive movie and Animal Kingdom definitely does a great job portraying that.

We took advantage of mobile ordering ahead of walking over and marked we were ready just before we got there. We had a minimal wait to get our food. I should have taken pictures because the food there is definitely different but it was really good. We really enjoyed it. My wife and I both got bowls and the kids tried the cheeseburger bao buns. We ended up having to do a second order to get some more because my wife and I wanted to try one and the kids really liked them. After our wonderful lunch we took some pictures.

It really is beautiful! The lines on the attractions were pretty long all day but I really wanted to ride both the river journey and flight of passage. We decided to tackle the river journey first. I stopped taking good notes. I believe I let my kids use my phone to explore the Disney Play app a bit. The line was long, one of the longest we'd waited in, probably 30 - 40 minutes. My kids didn't really love the ride. It is just a slow dark ride though I think what you see is pretty amazing. I think the fact I was the only one who had watched the movie meant I appreciated it a lot more than the rest.

After I needed to do something everyone would enjoy more. So we went to get some ice cream at the ice cream bus over by Expedition Everest. We stopped for some fun pictures on the way.

549141

I got a root beer float and the kids and my wife got ice cream cones. They had a peppermint ice cream for the holidays that turned out to be quite good. After the ice cream everyone else wanted to ride Everest again as the wait was still quite short. i wasn't up for it so I let them ride and I went to one of the animal trails and saw these guys.

549142

549143

One thing I haven't mentioned yet is we really liked how they did character "parades" in boats along the river. We saw them multiple times as we walked between attractions. I have no idea when this photo was actually taken but Donald's boat was one of my favorites. We also saw Pocahontas, Santa Claus, Timon and others on boats at other times.

549144

After they rode Everest the Flight of Passage line was down some to the point we figured it was just time to brave it. It was a long line but the queue was interesting. Again I failed to note how long we waited but it was probably close to an hour. I've heard the line often gets much much longer. It was the most incredible ride. I was a little worried if I'd have any motion sickness problems with it but I really didn't. There were a couple moments I had to close my eyes a bit but I mainly just enjoyed it and I had no ill effects after. I would have loved to ride it again but the line was just long. I wanted to run and catch the safari again before it closed as it closed earlier than the park. I was curious to see what it would be like at dusk. It wasn't nearly as interesting as in the morning. We saw less animals for sure. I also think our driver was in a bit of a hurry because we were one of the last loads for the night.

After the Safari the kids wanted to risk riding Kali River Rapids again which we did. Again we didn't get too wet. At that point we decided to hit up Flame Tree BBQ for some dinner. There was some shopping in there too. Again I quite liked the food at Animal Kingdom. It wasn't the best BBQ ever but it was quite tasty and we enjoyed it. The kids were getting a bit cranky in the evening. I really wanted to get some night pictures in Pandora though. One of the things I was most looking forward to was seeing the bioluminescence.

549148

549149

It was as cool as I hoped and I really love how our pictures turned out. One thing looking at this picture I failed to mention is both my girls decided to spend most of their hard earned trip money on Loungefly mini backpacks. My youngest daughter found an animal print we never saw anywhere else. My oldest found a more generic Disney World design she loved. I don't get the appeal of a mini backpack, guess I'm too practical. They both love them though and don't regret getting them. By the end of the trip my wife would join the club.

One thing I failed to take pictures of was the projections on the Tree of Life. They did do mini holiday themed projections on the tree. I think normally they have a larger holiday show. To minimize gathering these were just little clips they cycled through every few minutes. It was really cool I just didn't take any pictures. Good thing though because I'm at my limit.

I think this was one of my favorite days of the whole trip. I didn't realize how much I'd love Animal Kingdom. The theming, food, and attractions while limited were all really fund. I really enjoyed Pandora as much as I hoped. If we go back to WDW Animal Kingdom will definitely be a must do.

The next day was Saturday and we decided to use it to visit Universal. How would our venture outside the Disneyverse go? You'll have to wait until next time.

Good report so far. Unfortunately, AK is one of the parks we aren't sad to skip, although, EE is a great ride and I would go just to ride that.
