I have never heard this before... What does Served family style mean?

It means you are served alittle of everything the restaurant offers and then you can request more of an item that you like. Sort of like a buffet without having to get up and get your food! :cool1:

I am not sure about being served a little bit of everythng the restaurant has to offer. My take is that you get one large serving bowl or platter and it is shared with the entire party.

For instance, if you order spaghetti and meatballs, you would get a bowl of pasta and meatballs for everyone and than empty plates to eat off of, like if you were at home for dinner.

:thumbsup2 This.

Think of thanksgiving when you have several large plates of food that you would pass around your table and take off what you want to eat from it. The waitor would bring a plate of meat, potatoes, vegtables ect. depending on what the resteraunt offers or what you order for the table.

The restaurants that serve food family style have very limitted menus and yes they serve you a bit of everything. If you want more of any particular items then you just ask for more of that item. Restaurants that serve family style do not have menus that you pick and choose from though you could easily say you want none of certain items and lots of others.

That really depends on the restaurant. I think what you're describing is true at a place like 'Ohana or Garden Grill, but other places that offer family style service do have menus. Il Mulino does, for instance.

As PPs have said, "served family style" generally means that the food items arrive at the table on a communal platter and everyone dishes out portions for themselves. At places like 'Ohana and Garden Grill, the meal is served "family style" because you don't order a specific item. You can always request that they provide extra of something or none of something else, according to you tastes.

However, there are other places were only some menu items are served this way. For example, at WCC, if more than one person at the table orders the Canyon Skillet, then the Skillet is served "Family Style". The food items arrive on a common platter and each person (who ordered the skillet) serves themselves.

1) There are lots of formal explanations.
2) But, let's make the concept easy . . .

3) Picture yourself at home
. . . waitress (aka, Mom) sets the table
. . . she then sets the food on the table in serving dishes
. . . the family then grabs and shoves to get their choice
. . . they continue to grab and eat until full
. . . sometimes manners count, sometimes they don't
. . .when done, everyone gets up and leaves the table a mess
4) Same thing at LTT, except Mom is one of the diners, not the waitress
