Seriously?

I forget how good I have it over here. We have zero in the way of natural disasters and, as you guessed, the worst that happens to me is a four hour power cut. I found it annoying (it's why I posted this thread) but it never dawned on me that other posters here must have it so much worse.

I feel like a bit of a so-and-so.

Now I wonder where you live that power outages are so unheard of.

Sussex, a southern county in the UK, specifically Brighton, a little city. The most we get in terms of hazards is a bit of ice in the winter. I guess I live in a very safe part of the world. I mean, we have no poisonous bugs or spiders, only one poisonous snake (I've only ever seen one), no tidal waves, no hurricanes (well, one 20 years ago), so nothing. The worst you get here, to borrow a phrase from Family Guy, are drive-by arguments!

It's all good. No worries, just the idea of going without power conjures up a lot of bad memories.

Miniefan-girl, we got more in common than first realized. In 2003, Hurricane Isabel came through rearranged part of my house with me in it. Hurricane season I am a hot mess tracking to see if another is coming here.

We had a few Nor Easter's not too long ago. For 1of them, we had no power-well I have a generator-for like 3 and half days. but that flashback sucked. the sense of normalcy taken away.

What a coincidence! I'm very familiar with Brighton--I've been there many times as my stepdd lives there. And while it's a lovely city, I know there were tornados spotted there in 2006, there was quite a bit of flooding in Brighton in July of 2009 (I was there at the time and it interupted our trip) and I know that when you get a bit of snow, everything shuts down. http://tvnz.co.nz/world-news/uk-snow-causes-travel-chaos-power-cuts-3315007 My stepdd and the rest of my husband's family were really irritated by the snow shutting everything down and I got numerous emails on the subject.

My point is that really no place that is totally immune from natural disasters or even just from a workman hitting a power line or a motorist hitting an electrical pole. Stuff happens and we shouldn't really be shocked by it. ;)

I don't want to hear about anyone's little annoying power losses. Until you've gone thru some sort of natural disaster where you have no power, food, or clean water, socks and underwear and there are people who have lost their lives, pets, homes, and vehicles, you have no idea.

When you go without power and basic necessities for over a month and life as you know it is no more, then you can talk.

Kim

Been there, done that and still won't be "put Out" because of it:sad2:.

So no one, at any time, can complain about anything, because you think you had it worse at one time?

OP, I can understand why it would be annoying. Yes, it isn't the end of the world, but it's still annoying.

Anyone can feel free to complain about whatever they want, I don't have to listen. :thumbsup2

Sorry about your power problem, it can be frustrating and I'm lucky to live somewhere that it doesn't happen often. Unlike water issues, thanks to our old water mains!

I can empathize, however, with those of you who lived through the damage of Hurricane Ike. I'm a Red Cross volunteer and was in TX for three weeks working at a tent shelter for those who lost their homes to that storm. Those poor people lived in huge tents for six weeks before they found new housing, as their neighborhood was uninhabitable. 1 power outage for a few hours is barely an inconvenience by comparison.

Remember Katrina? A friend on oxygen with an undamaged home didn't get electricty back for eight months. This has to be a troll because no one could be that dense about a minor power outage of a few hours.

I assure you, I am not a troll and I find it deeply hurtful to be called one. If you want to further discuss the matter, I can PM you my contact details.

So no one can ever complain because someone always has it worse? It was an annoyance to the OP. Simple as that.

Nope

Don't complain about having the flu because there are people with cancer. Don't complain about a broken leg because there are people with no legs. ;)

My in-laws live outside Houston, Texas and after Hurricane Rita, it took 6 weeks for them to get power back.

Worst we had at home was 36 hours, car hit a power pole, burned up about a dozen transformers, they worked literally around the clock for most of the 36 hours to replace the pole, and all the wires and transformers.

You mention you work in a store. More and more retail stores here have a battery backup system that gives them some power for a few hours, or a generator, especially food stores. One to run the refrigerated cases costs about $50,000. Given that a power outage could ruin tens of thousands of dollars in frozen and refrigerated food, it's a small cost.

Oh for goodness' sake. The OP didn't say they were going to go and picket the power company and demand restitution or try to get someone fired or something. OP just said it was frustrating.
People complain about things of little lasting significance on the DIS all the time. I have no problem with that as long as they aren't having an outright meltdown about something minor, which the OP was not.

I personally griped (mildly) to a neighbor today about the gas prices being so high. Yes, I know that gas prices are much higher elsewhere in the world. Yes, I should just be grateful that I have a car to put gas into, and money to pay for that gas. But that doesn't stop the high prices from being a little annoying, and I don't think it's out of bounds to vent a little about it.
