Going back and forth for months figuring out best route to drive down there. Can't decide, heard many different ideas from 95 all way down, 301 or delaware to Chesapeake bay bridge............maybe I'll just let gps decide for me lol :) :)

:confused3 Where are you coming from???

I95 is ok once you get below Washington DC and imho the only way to go. The trick to driving around DC is time of day... You need to hit it from ~10am to ~2pm and then it is not too bad. So i would say do I95 just manage your times if you are going to drive though DC. Your GPS will tell you the same but i would do the bypass (I295) around Richmond. It is a little more distance but a much more enjoyable drive.

301 takes forever. As the PP said, the key to getting around DC is the time of day. avoid 7-9am and 3-7pm and you should be OK.

I live just off of 301 and it can take forever when you get every red light but sometimes it's actually quicker than taking the Beltway. At least on 301 during rush hour you are actually moving. There are stretches of 301 in VA with absolutely nothing around andit's temping to just fly through, be beware of speed traps. DH has gotten a speeding ticket more than once around Bowling Green.

Do you have a smartphone? Use Google maps/navigation. It uses traffic information in selecting your route. I'm not sure if it will recalculate your route based on changing traffic. You can always have the passenger hit the option for alternate routes. That will cause it to recalculate offering you a couple of options.
