I will be watching for the trip updates from Australia because the man has a way of making me belly laugh...thanks, Pete! Keep 'em coming...:lmao:

I actually had to stop reading midway through the blog (right around the cheeseburger part ), get up from the computer and leave the room to calm down!
There's a phrase about "busting a gut"- well I darn near came close this afternoon! :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl2::lmao:

I thought the "Shamu lathering up his naughty parts" was the funniest!! I agree, the bathroom should never have a picture window in it.

These have got to be some of the best blogs to date (no offense Kathy) ... I cannot tell you haw many people stopped by my office cause I was laughing so hard!!

I have to agree these blogs are gut busting funny!
I can "see" Pete saying these things and I it makes me laugh even harder. :lmao: The bug thing especially.
Great blog Pete!

I concur with Pete's comments on the bathroom bay window concept is more than unusual. But this maybe a australian cultural phenomenon.... because i have seen this in 2 australian cities, and have now heard about it here. I have not seen it anywhere else in the world!

I am not trying to rationalize it, but i believe/understand/have been told it is in order for the person lying in the bath, can watch the telly?!?!?! We can only assume people watching the person showering are also supposed to watch television as well.

In the examples i had seen, theoritically this would have worked. ie sitting straight up in a tub, turning head sideways, turning up sound to comeinto bathroom. But functionally (lying down relaxed soak it does not.

So that maybe your first cultural expereince... and totally unexplainable at that!

The food is definately a cultural experience as well, representing the best of modern australian cooking with references to all the ethnic cusines that influence our culture. All items you mention are traditional items from various cusines.

steamed black lip mussel = indigenous to new zealand
sofrito - classic spanish tomato sauce (tapas/spanish food is a current trend in the big cities)
chorizo - traditional spicy spanish sausage
duck spring rolls asian salad - palm cove is closer to asia than sydney. the duck is just the 5star twist
nam jim - traditional thai dipping sauce
grilled seafood cake - this pays homage to the great american crab cake (or the thai fish cake)! but crab is very seasonal in aus, so they cover their bases by using a mix of seafood imagine.
papaya salad - trad thai salad

The se asian food also works in the tropical climate you are in atm.

Asking for off menu items and menu changes will also be a cultural experience for you pete. While it is done here, aussies do not go to the extend of ordering 'off menu' like i have experienced in america. it will be interesting to hear of your experiences in this regard.

As for prices listed, i would have thought you would have found them fairly reasonable considering isolated location, 5 star hotel, and 20% difference currency exchange.

Love to heard more of "Pete's view of the world!"

cheers

I agree with that. Asking for something off the menu is something that is not done here in Australia but is considered rude in many cases. No wonder they freaked out.

Dont worry Pete, when you get to sydney you will be able to get anything your hearts desire including internet :lmao:

I got the impression that he wasn't put off by the food per se, but more that it was much fancier than one would have expected from a poolside restaurant.

All in all, though, I'm quite glad he's gotten a chance to blog, as the shower comment was hysterical.

That whole bathroom thing, is also around in the Scandinavian countries but when I have seen it, it's been an actually opening to the side of the tub, that can be completely closed for privacy and the shower is not part of the tub.

If I were sharing that room with someone, I'd be hanging a blanket up over that window.

I knew I had a bathroom like that somewhere. It must have been in Stockholm. My husband reaction was very similar to Pete's, mortified.

I am really enjoying the blogs. Too funny.

I had forgotten what a great writer Pete is. He really needs to write a book and have it published. I'll buy the first copy . . . signed, of course. :cutie:

I was amused by Pete's description of the bathroom too.

But then I recalled the layout of the master bedroom/bath in the 1 & 2 BR units at OKW and the other DVC resorts. So, you don't have to go all the way down under to experience that kind of shock!

It's the same here in the UK, I don't know anywhere which would let you order off menu, maybe adjust it slightly, but never completely off it. Cultural differences, even between countries that speak the same basic language are fascinating!

If the Australian Iphone makes breakfast in the morning, then I'm in!
