We are two adults staying concierge in May. I am afraid of rough open water. I don't like waves. I am looking for calm shallow water. Are the waters more protected at Family Beach?

Both beaches are quite calm. Not sure if it's important to you, but there is no shark net at Serenity Bay. We usually go to both beaches.

I have never seen rough waters at Castaway Cay. You also have to go out a LONG way before you are actually in water much deeper than waist height, there are a lot of sand banks. If you don't have kids, Serenity Bay should not be missed (in my opinion).

The waters at the family beach are much more protected than those at Serenity Bay. We just stopped at CC two days ago (12/6) and were happy that the day was calm and we could enjoy Serenity Bay for the day.

There have been other December visits to CC where we took the tram out to SB, got off, walked down to the beach, turned right around and got back on the tram. It was just too windy and the SB beach faces an unprotected area.

I've never seen any waves at Serenity. The water is very shallow for a long way out. It seems like you walk out forever and it's still at your knees.

People aren't really addressing the issue. It isn't the waves and deepness of the water, it's the fact that it is open water. You would much prefer the Family beaches because it is well protected and you aren't gazing out into open water. I don't think I have any pictures to share but I am sure you could find some to see the difference.

OKW Lover, so on a windy day, you went to family beach?

Yes. The day was too windy to stay at Serenity Bay so we got right back on the tram and spent the day at the family beach. If you take a look at the island you can see that Serenity Bay faces a different direction than the Family Beach section.

Excellent map, so now I see what you mean. How is the water getting in at both places, rocky or soft sand? Is the water clear in both places? I live in South Florida and grew up swimming in the ocean all summer long. I recently had a very large shark swimming next to me and never saw it coming. I have never seen a shark in the water while swimming before. Not in all my years (55) of swimming in South Florida. I can't get it out of my mind. I just want to swim somewhere and not be looking over my shoulder. Thanks.

Generally its soft sand in both places. There are some patches that have rocks embedded in the sand. Some people prefer to use those rubber swim shoes.
