September...what's it like

Hi...I will be in WDW from Sept 8-12 2014. Normally we go in the summer or Thanksgiving/Christmas time. I was wondering what its normally like at that time in September. Does the parks still need to be toured the same way they do in July, you know up at dawn for rope drop...lol...and then go,go,go. I was wondering if at that time you can get a little later start and still be OK....I am assuming that there is never a problem with park closure due to crowd levels like we see at Christmas and the 4th of July.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You can sleep later if you want to and you can definitely go slower in the parks...especially with FP+ now where you can reserve the big ride FPs ahead of time at the busiest parts of the day. I LOVE going in September. It's not as empty as it used to be but will feel VERY empty compared to July and Christmas.

It will be HOT...so just be prepared for that and taking occasional breaks in the A/C (indoor rides, shows, meals, etc) so you don't get overheated. It's also hurricane season...so just be prepared for at least SOME rain every day. Last year we had rain every day for about an hour or so in the afternoon and it was pretty much sunny the rest of the day. I don't mind the rain at all...it doesn't stop me from what I would be doing anyway...but it's something to consider if it would bother you.

I think the big difference will be the heat. You may have to take a bread mid day to get out of the heat like we do. We like to go back to our room for a quick nap or dip in the pool.

About 99.99% of the American schools will be in session so crowds will be a lot lower than you've experienced in the summer and over the holidays. You can sleep in if you want and it shouldn't be an issue. As others have mentioned, it will be hotter than what might be anticipated but again, it should be cooler than what you've experienced during the summer. Although Mother Nature really doesn't care about you vacation plans so you have to accept what you get.

On that note, also remember than September can be a month where hurricanes are possible. Disney World does a great job working with their guests on adjusting travel plans so it's not that big of a deal. I've been there during two hurricanes, having to adjust coming in to a later date and had no problems and once having a 24 room lock down while one passed through. But again, Disney handled the situations wonderfully.

However, that being said, if there is a possibility of a hurricane coming through Florida during your time, the resorts might be a bit more crowded as a lot of Florida residents go to Disney World to evacuated if necessary. Why? Because Disney World is one of the safest places to be during a hurricane.

Crowds lower than July but as a surprising number of systems are on year round schedules--and don't forget homeschoolers!--parks will be far from "empty" but so much better than July!

But the heat is still very intense and no break in the humidity at night.

We'll be there Sept 8-19th!!

Sept is an amazing time to go, I've gone the last 3 Septs and had amazing times each trip!! It's HOT! Not crowded (though attendance has picked up a bit each year since my first in 2011), and a great time to go.

You'll be more than okay sleeping in a bit if you want, especially with fast pass plus now out and running!!

Be prepared for rain, it shouldn't last that long, but it will be there!

Also don't forget to check out the halloween parties!!

We will be there the same week. We've gone the week of the 22nd I believe, back in 08, and honestly, I was cool in the evenings. I don't know if those 2 weeks make a huge difference, or if we got lucky, but I don't think it was too crazy miserable like some folks will lead you to believe. Just depends on your perspective I guess. Crowds on that trip were awesome, it was also during the days of legacy FP, but I don't think we waited for anything except TSM, but it had just opened so the lines were super crazy.

You can plan on it being high 80's-low 90's and some afternoon rain pretty regularly. Crowds are low so you can put a little less emphasis on getting up and to the parks at RD. No park closures as levels are usually a 3 or under. relax, have fun and stay hydrated. I would suggest ponchos that are easily stored for when it rains. Plan from a short shower to maybe a 30-40 minute thunderstorm in the afternoons.

July is, and is also far busier. So my thinking is that it's all relative. Maybe these people live in dry/cool climates, or they've never been to WDW during the summer, or both.

Personally I've lived in SW FL for a few years and live in IL now where the summers get just as hot and humid at times. I've also visited WDW in the summer many times. It's not fun to be outside at a park all day in that weather, but there are ways to manage. Sunblock, sunglasses, a hat, cooling towels, lots of cold water, and alternating inside/outside rides.

I've been in both July and September. For someone coming from a climate far different from Florida, they both seem equally hot and humid, even if they may technically not be.

We've gone the last two Septembers. I find it very hot and humid but I know that going in so we dress for the heat and take spray bottles to help cool us down. When we went in 2012, we had rain every day and some thunderstorms so intense they closed rides and delayed parades by a couple of hours. In 2013, the rain was less but then it also felt hotter due to that.

Crowds are definitely less than the times you are used to. I did notice an increase in crowds from 2012 to 2013 and I expect it will be even higher this year. Disney is doing a great job of eliminating the slow periods. Having said that, you will be fine not being there at RD.

I think people see September and automatically think...hurricane season! The funny thing is I didn't think about that at all..lol....I am definitely a go with the flow type and I love the hot weather so that doesn't bother me at all.
