September or October/Hurricanes

We went to WDW the third week of September 2004 and barely got out before the last major hurricane came into Orlando. MCO closed down half an hour after our flight out. At the time we thought we'd probably not go back in September but go in October instead this year. However, due to family birthdays and work schedules in October, the last week of September would work better this year (otherwise we'd have to go the last week of October).

I heard on the national news this morning that there was a hurricane conference in the Bahamas this week and this year the hurricane season should be about like last year. They have predicted 13 hurricanes (10 is average) and one is very likely to be a very severe hurricane. The reporter said the predictions, hurricane names, etc. will be reported to the public in mid-May.

Now I'm wondering if the last week of October would be better except I'd rather go in September, as it will be here sooner!

Every year the hurricane forcast says there will be major storms... it is just a matter of where they will hit, if they hit land at all. Don't base your decision only on last years season. Orlando may not see another storm for 20 years..or they can see 4 instead of 3 this year. You just cannot say for sure. Last years forcast never said we (FL) were going to be hit the way we did, all the way inland as far as the middle of the state (Orlando), yet we did. Go when you want to. I can tell you, October will have better weather & MK will be decorated for Halloween. Crowds will be a little heavier end of October as opposed to September too. Those are the things you should be considering...not last years hurricanes.... just my opinion

this early in the season - Hurricane even hitting Florida would be hard to predict.

I am going in Sept!!!

however I agree go in Oct - the weather is better and don't forget the wine and food festavial at Epcot....

I'd rather go the last week of September. I just have to convince DH that that's better than October.

before last year - there was not a hurricane in Orlando for over a hundred years - Walt Disney looked into it before he brought that property.

there may a hunderd year cycle - again - or next week they might get hit....

the hurricane season starts in June (there have been May hurricane) and ends in November. - anytime during this season you might get one.

right now with the weather so hot - I would not be surprise to see one in May and Oct - but hopefully not in Orlando!!!

Anywhere along the Gulf Panhandle - not to mention the Atlantic seaboard - you can get a Hurricane.

I once though it was too cold for the upper Atlantic Seaboard to get one - but hey there were a couple that hit New Jersey over the years.

it is the nature of Hurricane - once it starts....they can surprise even the people who predict them....

however they are generally predictable - you will have time to get to shelter - WDW resorts are built to last through hurricane - FW and some of the lower hotels - All Stars - might flood.

staying off site can be a problem. WDW is well organized and efficieny this helps with storms - the other places generally aren't.

Don't worry - go when you want too and have a good time!!!

We're going the last week of September this year (9/23-10/2). I was a little concerned about hurricanes, but a day at WDW with a hurricane is still better than a day at work.

We're not too worried about missing any attractions, since we go once a year. But this is the first time we will go during hurricane season.

We went during the end of October last year & it was great!! The weather was great, the crowds were low & we really enjoyed the F&W Festival and MNSSHP.

We are only going in September, because I had free airline tickets that had to be used by the beginning of October, so we decided to go for my sons birthday in September.

I've heard it is hotter in September plus there is more rain. I better buy a hat now, my hair is horrible when it's humid !

I use to live in NY & I can remember Gloria hitting us in the 80's, it was nothing next to Charley hitting me head on last year though. But yes, even the Metro region up there gets them too. I pray this year isn't like last year. I have finally gotten all my repairs done (just in time for the next hurricane season ) I would like to say it shouldn't be...but one never knows what mother nature is going to decide. After all, she is a woman & is forever changing her mind (meaning.....one cannot predict exactly where or when one will strike this early in the year as you have said in your post) I am ready for this season

We were scheduled to be there last Labor Day when hurricane Frances hit the FL region. We should have been there on Saturday but with MCO closed we got a flight out of Syracuse on Sunday to Ft. Myers (only airport open in Southern FL) Jet Blue was very accomidating about changing days and destinations due to the hurricane and we just changed our rental car reservation from MCO to Ft. Myers. Everything worked out and we are booked to be there the same time this year.

I concur with all of the others...plan on going when you want and have a great time...hurricances or no hurricanes!
