September 2011 - We are going to Disney World {THIS MONTH}! (Third Thread)

I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for me? Here's the scenario: We've kept our first trip to WDW a secret from our kids for the past 7 months. We're leaving in 20 days to start our holiday. :) Our flight leaves Edmonton, AB, Canada at 7:00 am, which means we need to be at the airport by 4:00 am to get through US pre-clearance. The airport is an hour away, so I've booked a hotel for the night before. Our plan was to pick the kids up from school, drive straight to the hotel and have an early supper then quick swim to tire them out and get to bed asap.

I can't figure out what/when I'm going to tell them though. I was thinking I should tell them about the trip in the morning when we wake up to head to the airport as if I tell them the night before they probably won't sleep! But at 3 am I don't know if I'll get the reaction I'm hoping for... Plus I don't know what reason I'll give them for why they're missing school to go stay in a hotel an hour away, I just can't come up with anything as they'll know I would never let them skip school without a really good reason.

Do any of you have any good excuses for me? Or maybe a suggestion on when would be better to tell them?

How about you have to have the house fumigated and need to be gone for 24 hours to let it air out? Hate to lie to the kiddos but it would be a plausible reason to go to a hotel.

You have such a great attitude about your health issues! I hope you don't keel over either!!!! What a great boss to have. Makes having to work so much better doesn't it? My DH has a great boss too. Unfortunately she doesn't have the power to hand out bonuses. But she sure gives him a raise when she can.

And by the way, :bday: I celebrated my birthday at Disney a couple of years ago. It's the best! Make sure you get your "Today is my birthday" button and wear it every day.

I decided a while back that I had to have a positive outlook on my health issues, if not I would cry every day.
My boss is great and he is the owner of the company, so he is the man that hands out the bonuses, etc.

I am going on my bday too, so I am gonna have to make sure I get one of those buttons as well. I already bought the "It's My Birthday" Ear hat. I found it on Ebay. Someone was selling a personalized one, I just took out the thread. Looks brand new!! DBF said that because I HAD to have it and took the effort to buy it and fix it up, I have to wear it my ENTIRE birthday.... So if you are there Sept 10th at either AK or DTD, you will see me wearing it :rotfl:

Why not just tell them that you have a surprise for them? You don't have to tell them what the surprise is. How old are they again? Would they ever guess they'd be going to WDW? You could tell them once you get to the airport. I think they'd more than likely be more awake at that point to fully grasp what's going on. That way you aren't lying, but you aren't telling them everything. To them, they just might think that going to the hotel for the night IS the surprise.

Aw ... so nice to see my name at the top of this thread! Very exciting!

Rachel (FW) and I got our first helping of pixie dust ... apparently we were upgraded to one of the Deluxe Garden View rooms at the Contemporary for our WDW stay! I have no idea what we're going to do with all that space (it's like a mini-suite), but I'm sure we'll think of some ideas! :rotfl:

I like the idea LHarper had about just telling them there will be a surprise. Then when you get to the airport, maybe you can have a letter from Mickey to show them that tells them they are going to Disney World. You can get a letter with their names on them from the DISigners here on the Dis. Or, you can just print one up yourself and decorate it with stickers etc.

Just completed the online check-in. Only 10 days to go.

:banana::banana::banana:

My younger DD told me last night that she and her sister want to do AK first. When I asked why, she looked at me like I was an idiot. "Expedition Everest at rope drop, Mama!" it warms my puny little heart!:lovestruc 22 more days until I'm off work, 24 until Disney! Watch out, Mickey, I'm coming for you!":woohoo:

You've done your job well!!:goodvibes

You'll probably wanna tell them before the airport - we were going to wait til the just before we left but getting across the border, telling the guards where we are going and keeping it a secret seemed a bit difficult. So now we are going for breakfast ahead of time and then telling them there.

So many reasons you could give them for staying in a hotel - spraying for bugs would work or that you thought it would be a fun thing to do with the swimming pool - kind of a back-to-school fun night... the next morning could be interesting with it being 3am - can you not tell them the time - how old are they? tell them at breakfast if you are having some or when you get to the airport itself... move the clocks ahead even (make sure you set your cell alarm though!!!) and have them go to bed early...

it'll be fun though - we've been doing the same - kept it a secret since end of January - can't wait to surprise them...

Hey Sillylily...Facebook just told me on this day in 2010 my status was..."Nothing better than Mickey Mail to brighten your day!"
And we left one day later last year than this year...so...our mail is on the way...I feel it! :goodvibes

Two years ago today facebook told me my status was "Just got back from vacation--do not want to go back to work!" :rotfl:

It is also my 40th Birthday!!!
(We will be celebrating it at Disney)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ShhhQ!!

So my class is social dynamics of communication and technology and my professor is big into blogging and social online communities! I want to tell him I'm already part of one in the Dis!! So you can bet I will be using this for class!

Would work, except they'll know we wouldn't go to a hotel an hour away with school the next morning and a hotel in the same town we live in. Little boogers are too smart for that! :rotfl:

That's a good idea....I should have added ages, they're 3, 4, 7 and 9. They know we're saving up money for WDW, but they think it won't be til next year. Because of this, we didn't go on any holidays this summer at all. So, maybe I could just say something along the lines that daddy is having to go away for a long shift so we decided to go on a quick mini-holiday before he leaves. (He works away quite a bit for his job) They might go for that.... then maybe I can wake up early in the a.m, set the hotel clock ahead to 7ish so they're not wondering why I'm waking them up so early, tell them we're going to West Edmonton Mall for a waterpark day, and have a surprise letter from Mickey waiting in the van for them.... :yay:

Thanks for the letter idea! I would've never thought about that but I think that's a perfect way to tell them! :goodvibes

Isn't it tough to keep a secret? I've gotten excited over things so many times and almost accidentally blurted it out! :lmao: I'm almost more excited to finally tell them than I am about the holiday! Well, almost! ;)

And thanks for the idea of turning the clocks ahead, that will definitely help get them to bed early and keep them from being too suspicious when I wake them up at 3 in the morning! We're eating after we get through pre-clearance, we I think I'll use the idea of putting a letter from Mickey in the van for when they get in to drive over to the airport. Then I can deal with their squeals and million questions without being in the middle of the airport with other sleepy passengers! :rotfl2:

I've finally (after many years) converted DH to the good side (Disney lovers). He asked me the other day what my favorite Disney bathroom is :rotfl:. My evil plan has worked!

This one is definitely my favorite so far!!! I  Mickey! :goodvibes

ShhhQ - Love today's pic
comp076.gif

:bday: ShhhQ! Wow, 9 more days!!!

Happy birthday - love your drawings... I'd love to be celebrating my birthday in Disney :) Means I'd have to travel in February and the Canadian winters aren't always the best for avoiding travel delays :)

Just WOW! I also think this is my favorite. But then, I say that to myself every day. You truly outdid yourself today.

And by the way, :bday: I celebrated my birthday at Disney a couple of years ago. It's the best! Make sure you get your "Today is my birthday" button and wear it every day.

Happy Birthday Shhqqq! Love todays drawing.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ShhhQ!!

Thank you all for the compliments and Birthday Wishes!!!

Yet another question, is MNSSHP really worth it? Our kids are 3, 4, 7 and 9. It'll cost us $320 on top of our already expensive 10 day vacation to purchase tickets. Is it worth that much money in your opinion? Seems like a lot of money just to see characters dressed up and see a Halloween themed parade and fireworks.

there is a lady on the DIS boards who will do up letters for you that have your children's names on them - its so cool and then you just print them out - we put it on card stock - looks awesome - she does them for the fun of it and you end up with awesome stuff... here is the link...

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2757931

just tell her which one you want and your dates & children's names... she then posts them on the thread and you copy the images into MS Word and print... I was able to put 2 per page so not too big - looked like real invites - there is one from Mickey Mouse saying he can't wait to see them... :cool1:

love the idea about daddy working longer shift for excuse for hotel and moving forward the clocks - just make sure your alarm is set on your phone - otherwise that would be bad :scared1:

6 days to go! Suitcases filling quick!

Anyone decorating their windows during their stay?? I just broke out my Xmas lighhts for my window! Home Depot Run tonite for window tape and hooks. (I clean it all up like it was never there)

I want to decorate our window, but I haven't decided how I'm doing it yet. Hmm!

The party is lots of fun and you'll probably read lots of opinions. We did it one year and had a blast, but still feel on the fence about whether it was really worth the money. And that was when we only had 2 kids.

The trick or treating is great, the parade is amazing as is the fireworks. But still, it costs a lot of money. It also creates another late night with the ages of your kids. They might have more fun swimming at the resortt :goodvibes. If we had tons of extra dough, we would probably do it again. But since we're on a limited budget, we decided to use that money on other things like souveniers.

I'll absolutely have to make sure I set my alarm on my phone! That would be tragic, wouldn't it!

Thanks for the link, that's exactly what I was wanting! (Except my own design wouldn't have been so creative or pretty!)
