Good Morning from California. Hi, I'm Judy from the San Francisco Bay area and this is my first, but I don't think last, Disney cruise. My birthday was a week ago and I turned 60. My DH gave me this cruise as a birthday present and I will be traveling with four friends, 3 cabins. We are meeting up in Barcelona from different places in the US. My cabin mate, Shanna, will be celebrating her 37th birthday on Sept 28th so this is a special cruise for both of us. Shanna is one of my best friends so you might can tell that I am young at heart even if the old body doesn't think so! We have both cruised, separately, on different cruise lines but neither of us have been on a Disney cruise. The other three in our group have and love it! They said we would never go on another cruise line after this trip. I am a Disney freak and have been to DL so many times I don't think I can count but never to WDW, so will make it happen at the end of this cruise. Thank you all again for the info and the welcome. I looking forward to meeting you.

Judy

Welcome - I am Valerie 56 and my DH is Bob 59. We live in San Francisco and are leaving on 9-13 for Barcelona. Your friends are right, a DCL is a different experience from any other cruise line. This is only our 5th cruise with DCL but with the ship coming to the west coast we hope to be able to go alot more. In fact, we are booked on the PC cruise bringing the Wonder to LA in January. Everyone on this board is wonderful, supportive, knowledgeable and welcoming. Val

What a wonderful and thoughtful gift from your DH for your 60th birthday!!

There are quite a few of us 1950ers turning 60 this year, myself included. You will have to stop by the Cove Cafe for the Geezers Club every evening after the late dinner seating.

John and I live not far from you in Woodside and are flying out on United from SFO on the 13th. Are you guys flying from SFO?

Both John and I love DCL as well. We have cruised many other lines as well but come back to DCL because of the people we meet.

I started going to DL when it opened as I was born in Pasadena and lived part of my life in Southern California. Still have plenty of "E" tickets in my collection. Like you, can't even count the times I have been to DL. Went to WDW the first time in the early 1970's when there were only two hotels, the Contemporary and the Polynesian.

Hope you join in some of the activities of the DIS group. While I realize you will be busy with old friends, please come to the DIS meet on board to meet new friends.

It's GROSS here today, too... :sad2:

I couldn't face going anywhere - just huddled indoors and had smoked salmon for brunch with a couple of Pamplemosas!!!
10.gif
That's what I call 'em anyway - pink Prosecco & grapefruit juice... ;)

Yum! Better than the diet coke I had!:thumbsup2

Oh that's BRILLIANT news, Mandy!!! I shall look forward to seeing it in just over 3 weeks!!! :dance3:

Thanks Kaz...I'm pleased too!:cool1:

We had the E111 for Europe every time, plus travel insurance. You get reciprocal health care in EEU countries, but not repatriation etc, hence needing insurance too.

It is EHIC now.

Thanks!:)

OK....question for you guys....we are flying in Saturday morning and being picked up by Disney.....do we need to get euros before we leave or can we just wait til we get on the ship. We are not going to do anything in Barcelona as of right now.....what do you think?
Tom
If I were you, I would get my Euros now as the rate on the ship is probably not very favorable. When I bought my Euros in April, the rate was $1.22. I think the rate is about $1.35 or more now. I think if I remember correctly, I paid around $1.50 for each British pound but I bought only $100 worth so I was not watching the rate as closely.

You might check with your local bank as you may be able to buy them cheaper there than anywhere else. My Bank of America branch quoted three days but in actuality, I had them the next day.

If you have a AAA card you can order them online. Minimum order for AAA is $250. Also, you can buy Euros or British pounds through Travelex either online or in one of their stores.

For example, if you bought today from AAA, you would pay $501.47 for the Euros and $10 for two day delivery. That would give you 370 Euros.

For British pounds for Gibralter, if you bought today from AAA, you would pay $251.52 for the British pounds and $10 for two day delivery. That would give you 155 British pounds.

Remember, any currency left over after the European ports can be used to pay your DCL bill on board. Don't know if they give a favorable exchange rate. Maybe some of our previous EBTA or Med cruisers would have some insight on that fact.

OMG!!! I just got back from a weekend on the boat and I am 40+ pages behind! I am going to spend the next few hours with a cup of tea, ignoring my family, trying to catch up, bear with me if my replies are days late, I will keep it to a minimum.......don't you people have stuff to do, let me catch up!!!!:rotfl:

Nope, I have no life outside the DIS!!:rolleyes1:rotfl2:

Thats true, I met a lovely, lovely lady from chicagoo last cruise and her grandson, they even came to stay with us in our villa the night before cruise,we spent a lovely week cruisng with them, I am really dissapointed that weve fallen out of touch, I wrote and e-mailed a few times and she never got back to me, I hope she is ok, but Ive let it go now because maybe she just thinks time to move on, but its kinda sad really,

Friends vs aquaintances....friends are precious and are in our lives forever, aquaintances are wonderful people that come into our lives for a time, give us great joy and then move out of our lives. Both are to be valued. :goodvibes

looking at the navigator i notice we have lots of theme nights and only 3 nights on rotation 21-23

does anyone have the link to the details of the theme nights? menu etc and where they are do i guess rightly the theme nights are held in some of the rotation restaurants?

there is lots of theme nights for dinner theme
Let the Magic Begin
Flavours of Mediterranean
Prince & Princess Menu
Theme – Villains
Formal – Transatlantic
Theme – Pirates of the Caribbean
Master Chef
Tastes of the Caribbean
Around the World
Semi Formal – Captains Gala
Till We Meet Again

seems to me disney has us well covered in dinner they all sound sorta interesting, may just goto palo for brunch is there any of the above that people would go to palo instead ?

thanks in advance for the advice

jason

It is of course personnal as to which one would skip, but we usually try to book Palo on Master Chef night, just because that is our least favorite of the menus.....not to say it is not good!

OK....question for you guys....we are flying in Saturday morning and being picked up by Disney.....do we need to get euros before we leave or can we just wait til we get on the ship. We are not going to do anything in Barcelona as of right now.....what do you think?
Tom

If you buy them on DCL then you can return any not used onboard. That would be one reason to do this. Just be aware that you have to have CASH to purchase them from DCL.

Hi, and thank you for the welcome. I think this hits post number ten so watch out....the PM's will start!

One more! You are at 9. :surfweb:

I really can not believe the weather here today! Its freezing, with a mad wind and chucking down with rain......more like winter than an August summer day!!!!:scared1:

We've been out for lunch to a pub by the river (sat indoors of course) :goodvibes and had a poodle round the garden centre........I've now been warming up by watching YouTube videos of the Dream being built......:cloud9:

Hope the weather's better wherever you are!:cool2:....and 3 weeks from today I won't care what it's like here.........:dance3:

It is very cool here as well. When we got home from shopping at 5:30 last evening we both commented on it seeming much more like late fall than summer!! Hoping the forecast is correct and that we will warm back up to around 80 by mid week. Dennis said we are going to need to start turning the heat on at night. :sad2:

What a wonderful gift!! I also turned 60 this year. There are LOTS of us onboard. :woohoo:

My DH John was in Barcelona in February of this year for the Mobile World Congress. When John took a cab in February from the Plaça d'Espanya which is near the Magic Fountain of Montujic to his hotel the HCC Open which is 10 minutes by cab, it cost him 20 Euros.

We have been quoted 55 euros from the airport to our hotel on Rambles. Two people 4 bags.

If I were you, I would get my Euros now as the rate on the ship is probably not very favorable. When I bought my Euros in April, the rate was $1.22. I think the rate is about $1.35 or more now. :welcome: from San Francisco! We have a nice group from here in NorCal on this trip. I am 35 and traveling with a friend I made on my last cruise from Atlanta (EBPC). Look forward to meeting you.

So 1 week from now vacation will have started and I will be in the air on my way to EWR. Only 5 more days of work (hopefully not long days). :cool1:

I bookmarked the menus. I can't wait to have so many choices every night and to try new foods.

As for the budgeting... I am thinking $500 Euros as I will need them in Barcelona, Malta, Rome and Maderia to pay for my excursions since those are the places I am not using Disney. Been torn if I should get any Pounds for Gibraltar or just get them on the ship or hope for a Barclay's ATM (reciprocal bank with BofA so less fees) when we get off the ship. I am buying the pass online ahead of time so won't need too many.

I need to start packing. I have gotten most of the things I plan to pack in the loft, but I keeping making lists, but really need to start executing them.

Called the bank, credit cards and told them I was going away. Also, called AT&T and got the Intl plan and texting put on my phone to activate on Friday before I leave. Need to email the hotel again and reconfirm my reservation and make sure Kimmy can check in before me.

I am off to the mall (outside the city since the city doesn't have my size - Tanforan) to pick up some last minute things and do a return. So need to get moving as I have to take public transit (don't have a car) since they open at 11am.

Catch you all later tonight!

Tom

Hi Tom. As mentioned before, we are flying in on the same flight as you. We have been going back & forth about what to do about Euros as well. Our plans for Barcelona are still up in the air but we do want to do something when we arrive. We have decided to figure it out the day we arrive based on what time we actually arrive at the port. Some have mentioned that on the last WBTA, DCL transportation took people on the early arrival flights on about an hour long tour of the city, if that's the case, we may wait at the port, check in, and then catch a taxi to the Christopher Columbus statue & walk up Las Ramblas. If we don't take a tour and arrive at port early, we will take a taxi to Christopher Columbus statue and find a hop on hop off bus tour. No matter what, we have decided that we HAVE to see something in Barcelona (other than the port). So, because of that we have to have some Euros before getting on the ship. We have investigated using an ATM in the Barcelona airport or at a currency exchange locations in Barcelona, getting Euros before we fly out of Cleveland (not a bad deal at a company here--$5 transaction fee and daily conversion rate-no other fees), and getting Euros in NY. Below is an email that I received in response to my inquiry about the Travelex office in JFK. Again, not sure which option we will end up doing but thought this might be helpful to you.

"Thank you for your email. Our location in Terminal 4 at JFK is open from 6:30AM-10:30PM, seven days a week. If your layover is between these hours, we would be more than happy to assist you with your foreign currency needs! If not, you can also purchase your currency online through www.travelex.com/us. Our service fee on selling foreign currency is $7.95 or 2%, whichever is greater. However, the commission charge would be waived if you purchase over $500 worth of currency. Exchange rates fluctuate and are subject to change without notice- we do not have the ability to tell you what the rate will be in the future. However, we can tell you that the current rate is 1.46. Travelex accepts cash, credit and debit cards as methods of payment. We would recommend that you use either cash or your debit card- please be advised that a Cash Advance fee and/or other additional fees may be applied to your transaction by your bank when using a credit card. We would also like to take the opportunity to suggest the purchase of a Cash Passport. The Cash Passport is a pre-paid card that can be loaded and re-loaded with Euros. The Cash Passport is not connected to your bank account and is PIN and signature protected and has 24/7 Global Emergency Assistance. In addition, the Cash Passport can be used to withdraw local currency at millions of MasterCard®, Visa or Plus ATMs worldwide, or pay directly where MasterCard or Visa is accepted. "

Here is information regarding currency exchange locations in the Barcelona airport:

Where is the bureau de change in Barcelona Airport T1?
In the area known as 'La Plaza', on Level 1 of the Barcelona Airport T1 building you will find a La Caixa bank with two windows for currency exchange. If you are heading to the exit for the main car park you will find the bank on your right just before the exit door. La Caixa bank do not charge commission to change foreign currency. Regarding the exchange rates, this is something that you should check with the bank, as these rates change on a regular basis.

Where is the Bureau de Change at Barcelona Airport Terminal 2 (T2)?
The bureau de change at Barcelona Airport is located in Terminal 2A (T2A). It is a La Caixa (one of the main Spanish banks) stand with two windows. It stands to the left of the food court area at the far right of the building as you enter. There is no commission charged for changing foreign currency at Barcelona Airport. As exchange rates will vary throughout the year these should be checked on arrival at the Bureau de Change.

Hope this helps....it helped me even though I am still confused and don't know what to do !!!:confused3 I'm stressing out about the long flight (never flew longer than 2 hours), how jet lag will affect me, how I'll stay up through the first day on the ship and dinner, only having "tentative" plans in Barcelona, and currency exchange. Once I get on the ship, I think I'll be fine :yay:

Linda

I have heard that DCL won't buy them back unless you purchased them onboard. But I would think they would let you apply them to your onboard account.

For our European cruisers, do you have to buy US Dollars in order to pay your DCL account? I guess I never gave it much thought before.

I did ask about just applying them to our account and was told only if they had been purchased onboard. However, we all know that 6 calls to DCL will usually get 6 different answers.:confused3

I always use Travelex from the UK and pick it up in the airport on the way. They give the best rate in the UK unless you are preordering through one of those "buy money now for December" type companies!

You may want to check on using left over Euros on DCL bill. I was told by DCL that they would ONLY take them if you had purchased them onboard.

I was told that you could use ANY Euros because people are coming from Europe on this cruise and would not have dollars. I wonder how we get a clarification. Oh Sue, do you think you could call the concierge manager again and ask?

In Spain the E111 only covers emergency help - so we all need private insurance. Good point I must check ours.

For those in the US. I have found the travel insurance medical gap is the cost of emergency evacuation. AAA (at least in California) has a premium membership level that covers the cost of emergency medical evacuation, worldwide, for the covered insured and spouse (maybe underage children too). Something to look into anyway. val

I had a lovely dream last night. We were checking in at the port and they gave us a booklet with the cabin number on. I asked the CM to read the number as I couldn`t see and it said cabin 8004!
Disney make dreams come true, don`t they
