Hi Tom. As mentioned before, we are flying in on the same flight as you. We have been going back & forth about what to do about Euros as well. Our plans for Barcelona are still up in the air but we do want to do something when we arrive. We have decided to figure it out the day we arrive based on what time we actually arrive at the port. Some have mentioned that on the last WBTA, DCL transportation took people on the early arrival flights on about an hour long tour of the city, if that's the case, we may wait at the port, check in, and then catch a taxi to the Christopher Columbus statue & walk up Las Ramblas. If we don't take a tour and arrive at port early, we will take a taxi to Christopher Columbus statue and find a hop on hop off bus tour. No matter what, we have decided that we HAVE to see something in Barcelona (other than the port). So, because of that we have to have some Euros before getting on the ship. We have investigated using an ATM in the Barcelona airport or at a currency exchange locations in Barcelona, getting Euros before we fly out of Cleveland (not a bad deal at a company here--$5 transaction fee and daily conversion rate-no other fees), and getting Euros in NY. Below is an email that I received in response to my inquiry about the Travelex office in JFK. Again, not sure which option we will end up doing but thought this might be helpful to you.
"Thank you for your email. Our location in Terminal 4 at JFK is open from 6:30AM-10:30PM, seven days a week. If your layover is between these hours, we would be more than happy to assist you with your foreign currency needs! If not, you can also purchase your currency online through
www.travelex.com/us. Our service fee on selling foreign currency is $7.95 or 2%, whichever is greater. However, the commission charge would be waived if you purchase over $500 worth of currency. Exchange rates fluctuate and are subject to change without notice- we do not have the ability to tell you what the rate will be in the future. However, we can tell you that the current rate is 1.46. Travelex accepts cash, credit and debit cards as methods of payment. We would recommend that you use either cash or your debit card- please be advised that a Cash Advance fee and/or other additional fees may be applied to your transaction by your bank when using a credit card. We would also like to take the opportunity to suggest the purchase of a Cash Passport. The Cash Passport is a pre-paid card that can be loaded and re-loaded with Euros. The Cash Passport is not connected to your bank account and is PIN and signature protected and has 24/7 Global Emergency Assistance. In addition, the Cash Passport can be used to withdraw local currency at millions of MasterCard®, Visa or Plus ATMs worldwide, or pay directly where MasterCard or Visa is accepted. "
Here is information regarding currency exchange locations in the Barcelona airport:
Where is the bureau de change in Barcelona Airport T1?
In the area known as 'La Plaza', on Level 1 of the Barcelona Airport T1 building you will find a La Caixa bank with two windows for currency exchange. If you are heading to the exit for the main car park you will find the bank on your right just before the exit door. La Caixa bank do not charge commission to change foreign currency. Regarding the exchange rates, this is something that you should check with the bank, as these rates change on a regular basis.
Where is the Bureau de Change at Barcelona Airport Terminal 2 (T2)?
The bureau de change at Barcelona Airport is located in Terminal 2A (T2A). It is a La Caixa (one of the main Spanish banks) stand with two windows. It stands to the left of the food court area at the far right of the building as you enter. There is no commission charged for changing foreign currency at Barcelona Airport. As exchange rates will vary throughout the year these should be checked on arrival at the Bureau de Change.
Hope this helps....it helped me even though I am still confused and don't know what to do !!!
I'm stressing out about the long flight (never flew longer than 2 hours), how jet lag will affect me, how I'll stay up through the first day on the ship and dinner, only having "tentative" plans in Barcelona, and currency exchange. Once I get on the ship, I think I'll be fine
