My percussion instructor from High School is the Drum Major for the Air Force. And 2 guys I marched with are in the Airforce band and a few others in the Marine Drum & Bugle Corps.
Hatboro - wow memories. I had some friends from Hatboro-Horsham and remember going to indoor shows there when I was in college. I am not a fan of the show in the movie theaters, I guess there is something about being at the show live, plus I am big on hang in the parking lot watching drumlines and hanging with friends. My college roomate was the soloist in 95 for Phantom. The Blue Devils and Santa Clara are in my backyard now a days and many people from those organizations are in the
Renegades with me now.
I got to WDW with my High School my senior year. It was an amazing time. That was the bands 1st time and they tried to go every 4-6 years after that, but sadly they are very small and not very good anymore - given all the cuts in the arts in schools.
Wow lots of band geeks. Yeah! Here is my musical life story.
I blame my parents. They did not know what to do with me (probably would have been diagnosed with ADD nowadays) so they gave me organ lessons starting at age 6 and it just snowballed from there. 4th grade I was in the percussion section for elementary band. 7th grade you move to High School band and being low man on the totem pole not many parts made it down to me during symphonic band season, so took up saxophone, but I always was in the drumline for marching season. Our marching band was very competitive; we were Group II Atlantic Coast champions all 6 years I was in (1987-1992).
From there I bought a clarinet at a garage sale and my 9th grade year switched to alto clarinet for concert band and did saxophone for Jazz Band. Then in my junior year I picked up bassoon.
During the summers between 7th grade and graduation I went to a 6 week summer music camp (Encore) run by a local university (Wilkes). Then the time came to go to college and I wanted to major in music - guess what - parents said no way. Told me to get a practical degree and can get a music degree later in life if I still wanted it. So the whole music loving thing sort of backfired on them. Needless to say I went off to college and double majored in Economics & Finance, but continued participating in marching band and symphonic band & orchestra as well as a percussion ensemble. Lots of my general credit requirements came from the music school. I think if I tried I could have gotten out of there with a music minor.
In 1994 & 1995 I marched with the Crossmen Drum and Bugle Corps. Then moved to California in 1997 and in 2002 found the Renegades Drum and Bugle Corps (a "Senior" Corps - don't have to be under 22 years of age). They belong to the sister organization of DCI - DCA (Drum Corps Associates). I am not participating this year given my vacation as I leave Labor Day weekend and that is championships in Rochester, NY.
I think this is why I really like Disney. I really respect the caliber of artists they have in the parks and on the ship.
On the topic of furbabies. It is kitten season and on my way back from grabbing lunch the SPCA had some on display. It was so hard to walk away. I had to put down my last kitty right before the New Year and his sister a few years back. I just can't justify getting anyone until after this trip as I would need to board them or have someone house sit while I am away.
