Okay, it has been quiet lately on the thread so I thought I would ask a Question of the Week(end). Has anyone taken a trip/city/amusement park/cruise that they would NOT recommend and if so why? Sometimes people have things happen to them in a particular city and they end up hating the city because of it.

Mine would be Palm Springs! Ugh! We went there - got stopped by the cops for speeding, I got bit by red ants and the hotel we stayed at, on the golf course, starting mowing in the morning at 4:00 AM! I couldn't wait to leave and will never go back - oh yes, my husband's grandmother also died when we were in Palm Springs!

I had to think long and hard about this. Sure we had some events that were less than perfect somewhere along the line: a cockroach (yes, I know people in Florida call them Palmetto Bug) in the bathroom on one of our stays in Orlando, non-stop rain on our last trip to Disneyland Paris and I came back with a chest infection or the bed in London that was so awful that we both ended up rolling on top of each other in the middle. Nevertheless, I have great memories of all those vacations.
The closest I would come is our stay in Las Vegas as part of our self-drive tour through Caifornia, Nevada and Arizona. The vacation was amongst the best we ever had. We knew before we went that we would love Anaheim as we had been before. We also ended up loving the Grand Canyon, Phoenix and San Diego. Ironically, the part of the trip I was most excited about was Las Vegas. I kind of figured it to be a giant, glitzy Orlando, but was sadly disappointed. We were near the top end of the strip, which can only be described as seedy. The hotel itself (Circus, Circus) was nice enough and clean and our room was huge. However, I found the place soul destroying. Still, even there we had some good memories. I loved the half day that I spent at the Secret Garden/ Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage.

To answer the question of the week I would say we had a horrible time on board the Norweign Dawn for a Canadian cruise. The ports were wonderful, but the ship was awful. We will never cruise Norweign again.

Oh, oh, now you have me worried. We have decided to cheat on the Mouse Boats and in less than 2 months time we will do a back to back cruise (5 nights followed by 2 nights) on the Norwegian Jade around the British Isles. What was so awful about it?

I can't believe that we are nearly on the third incarnation of the thread with still nearly 18 months to go.

We were in Sonneberg--fairly far north. We got super lucky on the weather--sunny and warm which was really good as we were hiking through snow up to knee deep in areas. My thighs got a nice pre bikini season workout as we hiked 6-12 km a day--largely uphill with 150 meters of vertical ascent from the train station to the hostel and about the same from where we did the high ropes course (I am so proud of myself for getting through that:woohoo:) back to the hostel (that was the hike with all the snow).

Sonneberg is lovely. When I was there, we had loads of snow. I loved the toy museum there. I am not quite as adventurous as you are. Just the though of a high ropes course makes me dizzy.

Hi everyone:

I just found this thread, I booked the TA repositioning cruise last week:yay:. I am Magie, I will be traveling with my DD Michelle and her roomate Chris. No kids this time (school makes that impossible). Michelle and I did a 4 day Wonder in September 2009:cool1:, and will be doing a 7 day Magic with my DGDs in June of this year:thumbsup2:. This cruise looks like it is going to be alot of fun, I cannot get over the fact that the cruise is over a year away and there already are 2 threads each over 200 pages long and a third about to be started:dance3:.

I have not had a chance to read more then a page or two of these threads:sad2: but I am sure that when I do I will enjoy them:woohoo:. We have never been across the Alantic and I am a little fearful of the flight:scared:, but I am sure that it will be worth it.

After I have read all 454 pages:surfweb: I will be back to you. Must go now. Magie

:welcome: on board, Magie

Hi everyone,:goodvibes
sorry I have been gone so long.
I have been at my moms house trying to care for her. But she has reached the point she had to go to the hospital for a week to recover from a heart attack and pneumonia , panic attacks and that illness brought on dimentia.
She had been forgetful for months but now she is very bad and quite ill, so we had to find a secure facility for her to live in for how ever much time she has. I will be going back to her place in a couple days to continue to clean it out to sell and to visit her while she still knows who I am.

I know I wont have time to go back and read all the posts for the last 3 weeks but I hope everyone is well and Welcome to any new people, I will meet you soon.:thumbsup2

I'll post when I can but there is no internet at my moms, so it wont be very often for the next few weeks. I cant wait for this cruise. That is what keeps my spirits up right now!!:woohoo::woohoo:

Kathy

Kathy, i am so sorry to hear about your mother.

Corinna

I am finally back in circulation again. We are two supervisors down now (both in my language team so we have gone from 5 to 3) and it really is not fun at the moment. The fact that I have been working graveyard shifts and mid shifts on alternate days does not help either. I came home yesterday and I was so exhausted that I hurt all over. I have today and tomorrow off and then I work all over Easter. I have finally scheduled my eye test for tomorrow, but today I am just going to be lazy and catch up as far as the DIS Boards are concerned. I am definitely in need of a cruise. Well, not long now.

Well, we are going to cheat on the Mouse. I have some vacation time to take in May and we have been trying to figure out what to do. A couple of weeks or so ago I spotted a fantastic deal for travel industry staff on the Norwegian Jade (NCL) leaving from Southampton. We are doing a back to back cruise: 5 nights going to Ireland (Dublin and Cork) followed by a two night cruise to Guernsey.

DH has been keen to try out another cruise line, but I was a little reluctant at first. I did a little research last week and I was sold. I love to spend time in the Rainforest Room on the DCL ships and they have something better still. Their heated tile loungers have a view, there are various hot tubs in the area plus steam rooms, sauna and rain showers. The prices seem to be comparable to the passes for the Rainforest Room on DCL. So I know where I will spend a significant part of the cruise. The spa is operated by the same company that operates the Vista Spa as well.

We will have an inside cabin for the 5 night cruise and a balcony cabin for the 2 night cruise. For some strange reason, the inside cabins on that cruise were twice the price of the balcony cabins. I just hope that we don't develop a taste for them as this would cut down on the amount we can cruise on DCL if we would only book staterooms with a veranda. It is great to have a cruise to look forward to in the very near future.

On Sunday I finally got around to try on the new evening gown that I bought for the cruise. It was still sitting in its box and it arrived about three weeks ago. The colour is much brighter than it was on the website and I was not too sure at first. Once I tried it on, I was sold. It is a perfect fit and looks gorgeous. Just a shame that I won't be able to use it on NCL. They are not really having a formal night and apparently most people will not dress up for their " Dress Up or Not Night". I intend to take a cocktail dress for that as I love dressing up, but I think the evening gown would be too over the top.

Corinna

Hey Corinna,
We went to the toy museum and I thouroughly enjoyed it. We also went to the aquarium which was much smaller than the website leads you to believe. We had left the toy museum earlier that new would haev liked to leave time for the aquarium which it turns out we didn't need to do:rolleyes:

I hope you have a great time on your cruise. I have never sailed NCL, but we sail Princess also and always enjoy it:thumbsup2 I want to hear more about this dress you don't get to wear on the upcomming trip:upsidedow(I love to dress too--a big lure of cruising for me). What color is it? better yet, can you post a photo?

Corinna

Hope you have a great time on the cruise! We want a full report when you get back!

Kathy - so sorry to hear about your mom! We will be thinking of you and you will be missed.

Corrina - enjoy your cruise! You never know, just because one person doesn't like it somebody else loves it. I don't like Palm Springs, but there is somebody out there that does. I didn't even know they offered 2 day cruises. That should be interesting.

By the way, the weather guy said this morning that there is no magic in Orlando this week because the weather was going to be a high of 62 - which you know what the low is. I am freezing AGAIN in April! We cannot believe this weather. It is definitely not a Blizzard Beach day.

Corinna--just to further prove Sandi's point that everyone has a different perspective (hey, there are people out there who hate Disney:confused3), let's look at weather:
Sandi is freezing today with a high of 62
We will 64 today and it feels like SPRING. Kids and I are in T-shirts and planning to eat on the patio again (as we did yesterday):rotfl2:
Sandi--I hope for your sake it warms up in Florida:goodvibes

ha ha Hadley! You are right, jeans and a long-sleeve shirt today, but when I woke up it was 48 - is that better :rotfl2: You always have me laughing!

When I was growing up and it was 55 degrees in NJ, my mom would open all the windows and just torture me with being cold. That might be why I get cold so fast. I would at least like the 70's!

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope you find a nice place for her and maybe take some videos of yourself and some other family and friends talking to her while she still knows who you are.:grouphug: and prayers for you and your mom.

I was there two weeks ago with a high of 62 and went to Animal Kingdom in shorts. It was very cold, but I didn't mind the warmth provided by the crowd waiting for the Rope drop.
We're looking at a high of 52 here in New Jersey.

Kathy

So sorry to hear about your Mom  My thoughts and prayers are with you (and her).

Worst trip - had trouble thinking about this and then realized that I'm always telling my sons about my worst trip ever!!! So, it was a trip to WDW (several - not going to mention how many - years ago). Both my sisters and there families were on the same trip. We stayed at the CR (in the South Garden wing - when there were two wings!).

There was nothing wrong with the resort, there was nothing wrong with the parks, there was nothing wrong with any of the places where we ate and there was nothing wrong with any of the CM's to which I came in contact.

There was, however, something seriously wrong with my two DS's!!!! They did nothing but argue and fight the entire trip! :furious: I practically wanted to cry by the end of the trip. I was frustrated that I had spent all this $$ and did nothing but referee the entire trip! :sad2:

There is, however, a glimmer of fun from that trip - I have never let them forget it!!!! :thumbsup2

Blah, blah, blah! ;)

Brothers fight, especially at about 12 & 6 if I remember. The funny thing is (to me anyway) is I'm sure we both had fun. :thumbsup2

My son works at Animal Kingdom (does the parade), although lately he's done the Spectro parade. He's only part time now. Works Friday and Sunday. Maybe you saw him in parade. Or maybe he was also doing Adventure Begins on the day you were at AK.

The ship was dirty, we saw our stateroom host a total of zero times on the 7 day cruise, the pull out bed was never put back so the room was wall to wall bed the entire cruise even after going to guest services on a daily basis, the excursions were not as advertisedd and when we questioned it the cruise director threatened to and did call the police, although we simply asked his name so we could write a letter. There were only two sit down restuarants that did not have an additional fee and they served the same menu. The entertainment was bad at best,

Suffice it to say we tried Norweign and will not cruise with them again. Other ships in their fleet may be better, but I can only comment on the Dawn. I have read other posts where others loved the other ships. we will stick with Disney.

I did not know that Sonneberg had an aquarium.

The dress is gold and stunning. You can see some really good photos here:

http://www.cyberexotic.com/Gala Golden Dress.htm

The colour is slightly out. In real life it is more of an antique gold and a lot brighter than in the picture.

Hope you have a great time on the cruise! We want a full report when you get back!

I will have to do a trip report for another forum anyway so I cross-post it to the Disboards and put the link in my signature.

I have every intention to enjoy the cruise. They have an area in the spa that is a bit like the Rainforest Room, but the heated tile loungers have an ocean few and they have a big square hot tub in there as well. I am just longing to just relax and to be gently rocked to sleep by the waves.

Thanks for your reply. I have read every review going on the Norwegian Jade and she seems to get pretty good reviews. Entertainment is not really a concern to us. I only saw two of the shows on the Magic and none on the Wonder so I am pretty sure that I won't go to any shows on the Jade. We go with a completely open mind. We know that it won't be the Magic/ Wonder, but it will be nice to get a comparison.

Kathy you are in my prayers! :grouphug: I hope everything can get resolved in a way that is best for everyone involved.

I just wanted to stop by and say hi really quick. I'm off to the first night game of the Giant's season. There is going to be fireworks! And the presentation of last year's Cy Young award. I'm expecting some really cold weather in SF tonight so I'm layering up and bringing blankets. But I'm looking forward to garlic fries and beer for dinner!

I didn't realize there would be fireworks. I'll be in SF tonight for an early screening of the new Disney Nature movie Earth. May have to take my time heading home so I can peak at the fireworks.

Kathy -

I see my DF made an appearance on here, DBK1029! I've heard about that trip many times! LOL!

I've been sick over the last couple of days. Nothing too horrible but just a pain.

I worked my first shift at the Disney Store last night since my surgery in January. It was so much fun! I was trying to sell these Easter Thumpers since we were down to the last few. Well, I ask this guest if he was interested in a Thumper and he called me a Thumper Pusher! LOL! I have to admit, that was a good one. I guess if I'm going to push anything, it needs to be Disney! :thumbsup2
