Separate Contracts and point transfers

For those of you that own separate contracts and different resorts, are you allowed 1 point transfer for each contract, or 1 total amongst all of your resorts? I am guessing that they are separate membership numbers so you can transfer once for each contract, but want to make sure.

My guide called me last night and let me know that he may be able to sell us 60 BLT points to go along with the 100 AKV points that we had purchased originally. He said that since we would be initially buying in for a total of 160, DVC may let us purchase just 60 BLT pts. I am not sure if I like that, but I am running all of the scenarios out to see what makes the most sense for us.

It is one per membership. Separate contracts are not necessarily separate memberships.

For instance, if you own points at AKV in a July use year, then add on BLT with a July use year, it will still be one membership. It is not resorts that determine whether it will be a separate membership, but rather how they are titled and whether or not they are the same use year.

Thanks, that was what I needed to do. If they allow us to and we decide to add on at BLT instead of just changing our AKV contract and buying BLT outright, we would be getting the same UY for both contracts, I was just under the assumption it was 2 different memberships.

Given your situation, that BLT contract will be an "add on" to your AKV contract -- same UY, same base contract number with an ".001" extension. You do not need to transfer points between a master and an add on, you can combine the points from both contracts when making a reservation. HOWEVER, because the contracts have different home resorts, you cannot combine the points when making a reservation in the home resort window (from 11 months to 7 months plus one day from check in). During that time, you will only be able to use your BLT points to book BLT. You cannot use your AKV points to book nights at BLT until you are 7 months or less from check in.

Even if you do have two totally separate master contracts where combining points is not an option and you must transfer from one to the other, when you transfer points in they retain their home resort and Use Year. So if you transferred some AKV points into a BLT contract, they would still be AKV points and you could not use them to book BLT unless you were within 7 months of check in.

Bottom line: if you are looking to book BLT 11 months out, you need all of the points to be BLT points.

Yes, we understood that. I was talking about transfering points from a different member into one of our accounts.

Example: a relative owns BLT just like us and will transfer me 25 points to complete a stay at BLT at 11 months out. I then want to transfer points over to my AKV contract for a stay later in the year...

I think both of these contracts will go under one membership, but with the one time transfer rule for members, I was wondering if this situation would work.

Thanks for the help.

If you have a contract and an add-on, then you don't transfer between them. You would get that 25 point transfer into your points and you could use them with BLT points at 11 months out or your other contract at 7 months out. You wouldn't be able to transfer AKV points from anothe member if you already transferred BLT points during that UY.

It is one transfer in or out of your membership for that UY. If your BLT and AKV contracts are all under the same membership (ie: same UY and titled the same way), then you would be limited to just one for that UY.

So, once you get the 25 BLT points, you would be limited to no more transfers until the next UY.

One thing some members do, who may need multiple years of transfers is gets a bigger one upfront and then through banking of their own points, covers themselves for years.

For example, say I need an extra 20 points for my trips the next few years. Instead of seeking a transfer of just 20, I may find someone to transfer me 80, which I would use the first year, and bank my own points. Doing it this way will cover me for 4 more years.

Good luck!

Another option -- which would not use up your once-a-year transfer-- and possibly would work with a relative, would be to have that relative reserve one or two days at BLT under his own membership number with you as the guest. You could then reserve the other days under your membership number and the two reservations could be linked. The consideration here is the number of points needed for say, two days, which might be 22 or 26 for example. In other words, it might be impossible to get exactly 25 points this way. Each member would have to have sufficient points to reserve "whole" days. When linking, make sure the two rooms are the same type and under the same name.
