I am going into my senior year and we have to do a senior project. It is a HUGE thing and we basically start planning it in middle school. Ask just about any freshman or older and they will have some idea of what they want to do for a senior project. If you fail it, you don't graduate. There are 3 parts to it: a written paper, the actual project, and a presentation. You must put at least 25 hours into the project itself. Some projects people have done in the past are rebuilding the car's engine, doing Girl's Night Out (an overnight orientation at the high school for 8th grade girls going there next year), shadowing a professional, and teaching kids a foreign language.

So here's my dilemma:
A friend of mine and I already have a senior project planned. Its approved and we have already started on it. Everybody knows about it and the routine is about half done. We are planning on making up a color guard routine and then performing it at a professional sporting event. This would require doing ALOT of fundraisers (equipment is really expensive) and alot of practices. My mom isn't too keen on this idea, though. In fact, she told me it was dumb. I see her point (it won't help me at all in the future and the senior project is really designed as a professional development type thing, but its not required that you have anything to do with your desired career).

My mom thought of something that I think would be really cool. My uncle owns a business and part of that business is flipping houses. She thought it would be cool if I talk to him about it, have him be my mentor and flip a house from start to finish. I think that would be really cool too. It would be something different. And the best part would be that I wouldn't have to pay a penny, my uncle's company would buy the house and finance it (they'd make the money, too, obviously).

I am really torn between these ideas. The first one would be a ton of fun and I would feel really bad if I backed out now. I would continue to help my friend, though, and do everything I said I'd do if she wants me to if I decide against it. The second one seems like it could be fun, too, and it would use all the aspects of business (finance, marketing, management, etc.) as well as the actual remodeling of the house. What do you think? I would love to hear your thoughts on each of these ideas as well as any ideas you have of your own.

I would go with flipping a house if you think you can do it. I think you would probably get an amazing grade on it based on all the lessons you would learn from the financial aspect down to the repairs.

I think you will learn more by working on the house project, but to be honest, it is a daunting task. Even with a great mentor you could easily get in over your head. Will you have a contractor or other workers that would be helping with the manual labor? I know you have to put in the hours, but don't allow yourself to become slave-labor in the name of what is essentially an internship. Be sure that you have help with the physical work and be sure that you are allowed to spend the prep-time learning the business aspect of it. Good luck!

If you have agreed to do the other with your friend I think you really need to think about pulling out on her. Did you agree to work with her and start planning? That is a very rotten thing to do. I do worry about how are you sure you will get permission to do it at a professional sport, I guess if you could go to a minor league baseball team or something. I think the 2 of you need to sit down and look at everything at a practical and realistic way together.

Couldn't the 2 of you do the house together? Although I think for 2 of you it is still a lot to bit off. I'm sure it would take longer than 50 hours to "flip" a house.

I don't think it is right or that you should "screw" your partner what ever you decide to do, that is just low.

Thanks! I would have outside people do most of the physical labor. I would use my uncle's people and just basically do what my uncle does (manage/supervise). If he needs to go and do something, he does, but he has people come in and actually do the carpentry/wiring/painting/whatever else needs to be done. KWIM?

I totally agree with you. That is the reason I really have to think about it. If I didn't already agree to do it with her, I would definitly do the house thing. If I do decide I want to do the house, I would sit down with her and talk to her about it. If she had a problem with me doing the house, then I would stick with her. I really believe in following through with your commitments and finishing it off. I would try to not completely screw her over and still help her with her senior project, just not turn that one in. Basically, if I really needed to, I would be willing to take 2 senior projects on just to follow through with my commitment.

About the professional sports team, we have already sent letters out to people within the local NFL team's organization. That is our top choice. If we don't hear back from them by Friday, we will follow up with an e-mail, call, and if it came down to it, we would go down to their offices. If we get turned down by them, we will try for the major league baseball team. Our fallback option is the minor league team. My friend's mom knows the owner, so she said she will get us the connections to them.

Thanks!
