For teens, there is no greater joy than graduating high school. Shaking off the shackles of education and claiming that hard-fought diploma is truly an epic day. Unfortunately, for several students at Bonny Eagle High School in Maine, their natural exuberance has led to some surprisingly serious problems.

On Friday night, when the senior class was waiting to graduate, excitement began to grow. Students bounced a large inflatable rubber duck. The noise level rose. And then came "the kiss." When called, one student walked on stage to receive his diploma and blew a kiss to his family. The school administrator, clearly not the sentimental sort, sent the student back to his seat ... sans diploma.

The seemingly harsh punishment has sent the Web all aflutter. Searches on "student denied diploma" and "bonny eagle high school" are both through the roof. Additionally, blogs and news papers are chiming in with opinions on whether or not the administration overreacted. The student's mother has given interviews and is quite upset at her son's treatment. According to an article from Fox News the outraged mother said, "A bow, a kiss to your mom is not misbehavior."

But the administrators feel they were just enforcing the rules that students agreed to. At a meeting following the debacle, school superintendent Suzanne Lukas said that "if a student doesn't adhere to the expectations, then the consequences are clearly spelled out."

This isn't the first time that rambunctious (dare we say "fun"?) behavior affected a graduation ceremony at Bonny Eagle. "Four years ago we had some issues with silly string and beach balls," said Lukas.

First off-
Second- I would like to know who the genius is making the rules, saying that you can't blow a kiss to your family!?!?

We had strict rules at our commencement ceremony, but we could wave, blow a kiss, ect. But there was also rediculous rules such as if you didn't show up for the practice run through you were required to give 40hrs community service before getting your diploma.

What a rediculous thing! I would so upset.

That ridiculous
when I got my diploma last year I blew kisses and gave a peace sign to everyone...and I got my diploma.
This stuff makes me angry. Freedom of Expression!

If the rules were made perfectly clear to the student and he choose not to follow them, then the administration did the right thing. If the rules specifically did not state no gestures or anything of that nature, then I'd be upset with the administration.

And stupid rule or not, if it's true that they were made clear, the student should have known to follow them.

Agreed.

nuff said.

I live just over the state border in NH and I head all about this.

From what I've heard, there was never a rule saying you couldn't blow a kiss or anything like that. The rules that were made were set to counteract stuff like the silly string that was mentioned at the bottom of the articleas having happened four years ago.

It's completely ridiculous.

About as ridiculous as the schools that ban hugging.

At a school by me, there was a scare that these kids would not be able to walk.
So for their senior prank (well, it was the valedictorian and some other top-of-their-class students) they decided to build a swing set on top of the school. They left cookies, brownies, other treats for the janitors who had to take it down. They took it down in 10 MINUTES. There was also a note (or it was somehow communicated) that these students wanted the swing set donated to a charity.
In no way was this harmful or dangerous or anything, but the administration said that they couldn't walk at graduation.
Well, after news got out about this and the media went crazy the administration decided that they would let them walk, but the valedictorian was not allowed to speak at graduation.
:confused::confused::confused::confused:

I agree, however it still is a harsh rule

What happened to graduation being about the students? They're turning it into a strict ceremony that people will dread and want to skip.

This is ridiculous.

That is about the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

The graduating seniors at my school this year weren't allowed to throw their caps because they might poke someone in the eye. But they all did anyway and no eyes were lost.

It is stupid and uncalled for. At my school the principal is cool with senior prank just as long as it is not damaging. Maybe its because the school has been there for over a hundred years

blowing a kiss?
i dont see how that is in any way harmful....
this was probably the stupidest thing i've ever heard
