Selling on eBay

My friend had brand new dvd that I persuaded her to sell on eBay. I've eBayed for years as a buyer but never a seller. Anyway her item sold on 'Buy It Now' on Sunday night. Person who bought it had a great rating. My friend asked for payment within 3 days by paypal. She has sent the invoice to the buyer and has heard nothing and has received no payment. The 3 days are up tonight, what should she do? She has already emailed the buyer with a polite email advising that payment is due tonight.

I feel quite bad because I persuaded my friend to sell the item.

3 days is not a long time really, eBay will advise to give 7 days to pay before she can take action. If the buyer does not pay eBay will refund her listing fees and she can relisit the item again.

3 days is quite tight especially over a bank holiday weekend as lots of folks might be away. If the buyers rating was 100% I would give them a bit of leeway. If not then there is an option to send a reminder via the system which is the first step towards telling ebay you/they didn't get paid.

Complaining about not receiving payment within 3 days is a little over the top in my opinion. When I purchase items off of eBay I often don't log on and see what I have won until a 4/5 days after the bidding has ended. I have never had any problems at all. Not everyone logs onto the internet each and every day! I'd give 7/10 days before filing an alert with eBay.

Personally I pay for ALL items immediately after winning them, even before being invoiced for them, as I hate to keep people waiting.

I especially pay immediately if i've bought something on a buy it now as i'm there at the computer having just bought it anyway.

I also check all the description etc to make sure that there are no special instructions or requests etc as sometimes people tell you they're away for a week or so but I do think you should give it 'til Friday before taking any action.

I have had sellers send me things quite late without communication only to discover that a relative has died or they've been in hospital etc so give them the benefit of the doubt (until Friday at least) and then politely get back in touch with the buyer and tell them that you're relisting it as there has been no communication and payment was requested within 3 days.

I wouldn't file a non-paying alert straight away, just in case they do get in touch to explain why. If after another week you've heard nothing then file with ebay. If they have 100% rating (and more than just one feedback) then there has to be an explanation as to the delay.

Don't worry too much, at the end of the day your friend has lost nothing and can still go and sell it.

I agree with most on here Florence, I always give my buyers at least 7 days to pay, even if they use the buy it now feature, but just to let you know for future reference there is the option to use "buy it now and immediate payment required" option, where as the sale can not go through until the buyer makes an immediate payment, but there is an extra charge for this service.

I wouldnt worry to much at the moment Florence as ebay will not allow you to make a claim until 7 days has gone past, and when you do submit a claim you then have to wait another 7 days before you will get your listing and selling fees back, just to give the buyer an option to get in touch and tell you why there is a delay.

I hope it all works out ok for your friend. Im sure it will.

3 days isnt long....im sure the payment will turn up soon, the buyer may be waiting for a paypal payment themselves in order to pay you (ive done that many times rather than upload funds)

I agree with others.. Tell her to wait a bit longer (since eBay won't let you take any action til at least 7 days anyway) Most people do pay so I wouldn't worry too much

Although i would prefer the buyers to pay asap we also give them 7 days to pay. With it being bank holiday they may have gone away or just be busy. Tell your friend to give them 7 days and then go to ebay!

be thankful a trusted user bought your item....i listed a mobile phone three times and every single time it has been 'bought' by users who want me to post to Nigeria even though it's a UK only auction. These are always scammers, and every time I have reported to eBay only to get the same response. Safe to say I probably won't list or sell under eBay again, it's been more hassle to go through three false buyers than the phone is worth. I've been trying to sell for two weeks now on a 7 day auction, had all gone well I would have shipped the phone and be £70/80 better off, instead i've just given off a lot of steam.

Back to topic, give the buyer some slack like people have said, bank holiday, personal issues, whatever.....as much as I and other people prefer to pay straight away, some people might have to access funds, or have a reason for not paying straight up

My friend is going to wait until Sunday. That will be 7 days since the item was purchased. She has also sent a couple of emails to the buyer asking if there is a problem but no response so far.
