Selling Magic Bands on Ebay?

After throwing our Magic Bands away in the trash, I thought to look them up on Ebay. They are selling for like $30 apiece First of all, is it safe to sell a magic band that has (had?) my personal and pass info on it?

Second, why are they selling for so much? I saw something about Disney Infinity??

If it's safe to sell them even with them having had our info on them I'll go dig them out of the trash

As far as I can see, there is only one used band for sale right now on eBay. Either Disney is shutting them down, or no one is buying them.

Look at sold auctions...there are a ton! I saw more than 1 for sale. Maybe they were all new and not used though? I'm chicken to sell something that had my personal info and CC info on it.

You're right; I just looked at current auctions. I have no idea why anyone would buy these.

That's what I gathered also (although, why would anyone collect these?!). I get the Disney Infinity thing because that is hot right now.

Do you think that info about the original owner could be harvested off of the bands though? I'm only worried since they put your credit card and personal info on the bands, KWIM?

I wouldn't sell something that has my information on it, but I'm kinda hyper-vigilant about that kind of stuff... I'm the person who wouldn't post pics of my kids on the internet. It took awhile to even place pics of them on FB.

Magic Bands DO NOT store your credit card information any personal identifying information on them. It stores a small discrete piece of information that is linked to the information on Disney's system about you.

We are headed for our first magic band trip in March, but I've already noticed that Disney includes a means for people to disable the card information stored on MDE, so I would presume that the same is true for MBs and that past the time of your resort visit, the information on your MBs should also deactivated.

I would still sleep at night if mine made it into the trash on accident. Although, just because I am a total paranoid queen with no sense of reality, I'd likely degauss a magic band I was going to throw into the trash.

They don't put your credit card on the bands. See post above.



I suppose it's possible to harvest information off the bands. . .if the baddie has a means to get into Disney's computers and harvest the information. But if a black hat has that kind of evil powers, I doubt he/she would be worried about individual magic bands.

It's more likely someone might try to use the magic band at DTD and bluff their way into making a charge that Disney would have to eat.

The few I saw on there said that the MagicBands were extra ones that were sent to them, and never used in the parks. Unless they had their credit card information on file before the MagicBands were sent then none of their information would be stored/activated on them.

A deliberate evil doer with these things would be buying an old one on ebay, going to the park, getting the information from an active one by passing a device next to it when the wearer wouldn't notice to get the information that's on the active device, shoulder-surfing the pin # from the owner of the active magic band and then spoofing the information from the old band onto the new band and then, Bob's your uncle. Except of course, that Disney has great surveilance and will get some great pics of you buying all that Disney artwork. Hmm. So definitely invest in a good disguise that will fool their facial recognition software. . .and change the top of your head frequently. (Hats and such.) Actually, change everything often. . .

Yeah, honestly, this isn't where the big risk is at Disney right now.

Right now, with all the growing pains Disney's undergoing, the magic bands are the least of anyone's worries as per Disney data.

And actually, privacy concerns are pretty low on the list too.

After all, they're going to a new system of doing things, and one of the unintended functions of any process (i.e. means of doing a thing) is fraud, usually more when the process is newer. . .

Hmm. I'm going to go feed the cats and study incident management and disaster recovery and not think about this too much.

It wouldn't matter. As noted by a couple of PP's, there is no credit card or other personal data on the MagicBands. Ever.

Agreed. I was going to type out a bunch of stuff but just take a look at this thread. Prepare to be hit hard by tech talk.

Essentially, the data is encrypted and even if it wasn't there's no personal information on the card anyways.

I found 2...one of the others is in the trash in the DVC unit, and I think I tossed the one I was wearing in the trash can at CVS yesterday on my way into the store. Hopefully neither of those ever somehow comes back to haunt me by way of an identity thief. I didn't even think about it.
