I need to sell our formal dining table, chairs, and china cabinet before we move. I've tried facebook, but no luck. DH listed on Craigslist, but he hasn't had any luck there either. What else can we do? There aren't any furniture consignment shops near us, and it would cost a lot to have it moved to one in the city. Help please!

OP, do you have an estate auction house nearby? Often you can consign your goods there and they will sell them during an upcoming estate or shop auction.

I feel your pain. We have a formal dinning room table and chairs that is way too big for our home. It was originally DH's when he lived out of state in a home with a significantly larger dining room than what we have now. It has 8 chairs and a leaf but we can only fit 4 and no leaf. The rest sits in our garage collecting dust. I wish I could sell it but DH remembers what he paid for it less than 10 years ago and we couldn't get even half that if we tried to sell it through craigslist, etc. My guess is you have it priced too high and without other resources to sell (like a consignment) you will have to take a big price drop or be stuck with it. Only other recommendation I have is reaching out to friends who may not have seen your Facebook posts.

There's a decent option in Louisville for an auction house to sell surplus furniture. Hays Auction on Spring Street may be worth a call. They'll accept your consignments on certain days and times.

I agree with everyone about price. I have been looking for some decent shape used furniture that I planned to paint, do a shabby chic type thing. I don't want to buy good or expensive furniture right now because my kids ruin everything. It's ridiculous what some people think their used furniture is worth. For example, I did pay $550 for a used table, set of 8 chairs, and buffet. I think I probably overpaid, but it was Ethan Allen, had nice lines, was the exact weird smallish oval size I needed to fit my space and I didn't have to drive far to get it. I had trouble finding the size I needed with 8 chairs so I was willing to pay more. I painted the chairs and table legs, recovered the seat pads. I think it looks fab and I won't be too upset when my kids ruin it. I'm now looking for a coffee and side table set. Again, it has to have the right lines, be paintable, and be close by. I won't drive far for used furniture. I'm willing to pay about <$100 for a set. I disagree with the 50% off of original price recommendation. Think more like <25%, if it's not a classic look, even less just to get it out the door. The people who buy used furniture on Craigslist are mostly people like me, wanting to re-do the piece or young adults just starting out. Either way, not willing to pay much.

It really just depends. I sold a 9 year old Pottery Barn Kids train table for 50% what I paid within 6 hours of listing it and I had a ton of people interested. The new train table had a weird design and people wanted the old one. It was in good shape.

My dd's crib I sold for about 15% what I paid (it was a $1,000 crib). I knew no one would pay much more than that when they could buy one new for the same amount. But it was gorgeous. And I had a ton of people interested.
