selling contract at one resort, buying at another

We currently own at SSR but being that I grew up 10 mins. from the real SS in upstate NY and still live in NE, I just didn't feel like I was 'away' on vacation when we stayed @ the resort. We loved the rooms, but the overall atmosphere of the resort just didn't give me that "I'm on vacation" feel. We're considering buying resale for either OKW or BCV. We know that we would lose the extra years that we have on our SSR contract by buying into one of the other resorts but that's something that we might be willing to give up for another resort that gives me that "I'm on vacation" feel.

Has anyone sold their entire contract with one resort and bought one with another resort? If so, was it a long drawn out process or was it pretty painless? Thanks!

I have both bought and sold contracts for various reasons, but it is definitely very quick ( normally less than 6 weeks ) and painless. Good luck with your new acquisition!

You may consider just holding on to your SSR contract and booking OKW at 7 months. OKW is a large resort, like SSR and usually has availability at 7 months, except during the busy holiday season, spring break, etc. Also, Grand Villas at OKW can be hard to come by at 7 months, even though there are several of them at OKW.

I sold my contracts at BWV, VWL and OKW so I could buy at BCV. I agree with Chuck...if you want OKW, just keep SSR. Unless you are trying to book GV's, you should have little problem getting OKW.

If you want BCV, you really might want to own there.

Selling and buying was easy, but it did set us back some $$$$$.

There is certainly a cost involved in selling and buying back at a different resort. For a 200 points contract to sell at SSR and buy back at one of the destination DVC resorts, you're looking at giving up around $4000 by the time you figure the commission on the sale, closing costs on the new purchase the the price differential. You'd likely be better off buying a few points as an add on at your preferred resort so you can guarantee a few of the trips at that resort. And/or learn the rules for non home resort booking to the letter and play the game better than anyone else.

I sold my BCV contract because I wasn't impressed with it, and bought a contract at OKW because I fell in love with it. I wanted a grande villa, and I do not regret buying and selling contracts to get what I wanted. I only had to sign in a couple of places, and four weeks later I had my check for the sale. The purchase was handled online, except for a couple of phone calls, and couldn't have been easier.

You know what they say "different strokes for different folks" If it were me I'd keep the SSR. My DF and I also really like OKW but there is usually availability due to the large size of the resort. If we can't get into OKW, no biggie b/c SSR are is still a beautiful resort

We sold 150 @ OKW & 50 @ BWV to buy 200 @ BCV, back when BCV was being sold by DVC. My family always loved OKW-- but fell in love with BCV. We were concerned we would have trouble booking BCV at 7 months in the summer, and at other times like F&W and F&G. Luckily I was a cast member when we did this, so it did not really cost us any $$ out of pocket.

No regrets....... but we did not have the extra issue of a different length of contract.

We sold all our points at VWL, so that we could own at OKW. Some other posters may say "Keep your SSR points, you can probably still get OKW" and that would have probably been true if we'd kept our VWL points. However, DH wanted that feeling of owning where his heart was, and it's by far at OKW. Maybe it wasn't the best move financially, but it wasn't bad, and it wasn't a pain. Now, DH can say proudly that he's an OKW owner (and since the maintenance fees are lower, I talked him into a few more points there, so I'm not complaining!). First we bought points at OKW, before we sold VWL-I'd recommend that so that you're not without your DVC for one minute! Then we sold VWL, 25 points in the first day, 150 took a few weeks. Absolutely no regrets! And like I said, since we bought 210 points at OKW, it ended up being like a 35 point add-on. The difference in the # of years you'd encounter wasn't an issue we faced-besides we'll be 90 in 2041, so we figure it's not important to us!

If you like OKW or BCV and want to stay there, then sell your SSR points. DVC keeps adding more members that will create even more competition for peak times @ DVC resorts. There may be a time in the future that your home resort becomes even more important (especially if you need a Grand Villa or don't have much flexibility when you can travel). Make absolutely sure it's what you want to though...don't do it on a whim.

That's what I was thinking. However, judging by some of the posts here regarding people who have sold and rebought elsewhere, I wonder how much of a transaction cost savings you'd have w/ a swap? Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to arrange.

Thanks for the posts so far. I appreciate all of your feedback and opinions! It's great to be able to rely on fellow Dis'ers who are in the know!

If your talking a permanent swap with another member, it depends. It's really just selling to each other. But one might be able to avoid the commissions and a fair amount of the closings costs if you're willing to do it yourself and don't go through a broker. For OKW points I'd say you could do it fairly cheaply. A large part of the difference between BCV for example is the difference in value per point. You also get into the situation that the other party may want retail for their points but want to allow you wholesale value on yours in the transaction.
