Long story but DH and I are doing Dave Ramsey. We do not have a huge amount of debt but we do have 2 car payments. I am thinking about selling my car and driving an older car so we have more money for retirement/college etc. My SUV is 2009 and I have seen it listed between 20-23 k at dealerships used kbb is about 20 k for private sale.

Do you think I will be able to get it sold at 17-18k?

How long should I expect to sell it 2-3 months, or much longer? I do not have trouble making payments but I will have to put some savings into fixing the other car and I want know if this is a realistic plan to put us in a better place long range.

I know all of this is speculative I am just looking for advice from those that have sold used vehicles in this economy. I am flexible with price because I am looking more at the long range then short term but I do have to get enough to cover my loan and would love to get a little cash to put towards my other vehicle if possible.:lmao:

I think you can sell it. Put it on Craigs List. Put a sign in the window and park it somewhere with a lot of drive-by traffic. If KBB private party is $20,000, I'd ask that and then lower the price if you don't get much interest and leave room for negotiation. Spend $100 to have the car detailed. It will help tons! Good luck!

If you're willing to take 17k, have you attempted to sell it to a dealer and be done? May be a better solution than making 2-3 more payments. If you decide to sell it yourself, go ahead and get the carfax report and provide it to interested parties. Good luck, selling a 20k vehicle is tough as an individual.

Post it on craigslist. We've sold 2 cars that way and within hours of posting them.

Used cars right now are actually getting very expensive. The reason is because most people are now buying used instead of the exceptionally high price of new cars. So if you clean it up, and make it a good deal, I'm sure you could sell it. Our friend is doing the exact same thing, he just bought a 2- year old Tundra about a year ago, and just sold it to a private party with in days of listing it on craigslist. Also, if you live near a big city, but not quite in it, list it in your town, but also the nearest big city to you. People will drive if they are serious about it. Carmax, as previous poster suggested also a good idea. You can sell to them without buying.
What kind of SUV is it?

Try Carmax, it is easy but you get less than book value. Sounds like you are planning to take less anyway. What state are you in?
