"Selfies"...Do you take them? Do you like seeing them?

I don't see what all the hubbub is about. There are 10 million things more important in life than worrying about people taking selfies.

I agree that there are lots of things more important. But if we only focused on that stuff, this board would be pretty serious and boring. And besides--most of those topics on the really important stuff are banned. :thumbsup2

No I don't follow many teens on instagram but I have 2 teens myself and plenty of nieces and nephews on FB. I also have some adult friends who love selfies.
And yes I do realize there is a difference but I still stand by the statement that if you are posting your selfie (whichever kind) for everyone else to see it then you are doing it for attention, "look at where I am, look at what I am doing, look at me" which IMO makes you a little self absorbed. It makes no difference if someone wants to see it, you are posting it because you want them to see you.

What is wrong with that? Everyone is self absorbed whether they post a picture or not. Any picture of oneself whether a selfie or not is the same thing. Posting anything whether visual or written is the same.

I like seeing pictures of people having fun. You seem to be saying that all pictures of vacations, outings, celebrations, or life are just self centered. I can't imagine what is on your fb that isn't self centered. Unless you are just one of those people who share page after page of political statements and meaningful (to you) quotes.

No kidding.

So we can't discuss anything unless you deem its worthy?

I'm not sure how the words "there are more important things to worry about" translates to "you can't or shouldn't talk about it".

All I'm saying is that it's a silly thing to get worked up about. Certainly you have to worry about naked selfies, especially among teenagers. There are some issues with people having an inflated ego if they do this all the time, but unless it's someone you deal with on a regular basis, I don't see the harm.

Although the fact that the media seems to at least spend some time on showing selfies (and reporting on celebrities to begin with) I think shows how priorities are screwed up in the First World.

Do it. Sometimes. Don't care. It's fun and silly. I went to WDW for a 33 Birthday and our rule was "only selfies." We have a hilarious series of shots that are great memories. I also like seeing pictures of people's food!

This stuff isn't serious, so I don't take it seriously.

The point is that here are always more important things. I don't think anyone is actually sitting at home pacing the floor and contemplating injuring anyone for disagreeing. Just discussing. Out of interest or boredom

I can't stand the duck face selfies or those oh-so-deep selfies with the oh-so-deep quotes or song lyrics underneath. A little too attention seeking for my taste.

No, you seem to misunderstand what I said. I said its the act of posting your pic for all to see you, as self centered, and you can't really argue that it isn't. There isn't anything wrong with that, never said there was only said you are self absorbed if you feel the need to share what you do, where you go, what you eat with everyone. You are seeking attention. Again, can't argue that it isn't.
I must have hit a nerve, sorry the truth hurts a little.

Lol nah. Just waiting forever for an appt.

We make the same point. Anything posted about ones life is self centered. What is social media about other than that? What else do you expect of it if not that?

I have a FB friend who takes about 3-4 selfies a day and posts them. Like, "at the library!" Or "at dinner!"

But it's just her face, you can't see the background or where she even is, so I don't really understand the point.

With extremely rare exceptions (like a Facebook profile picture) I don't take them, and I very rarely look at them on purpose. Like seeing them? They're just another picture, and I don't find much enjoyment in looking at photographs at all. They're just reminders of the past, and we've moved on.

You don't like pictures??? That's just crazy talk!! Heck...If I couldn't take pictures on vacation I don't think I would even want to go! I love photography.....taking pictures....editing pictures...looking at them later and remembering all the good times that were had in those pictures. I love looking at other people's pictures too...love instagram so I can look at pics all day. I love photography message boards so I can see all the amazing pictures people take.

I mean I can understand if people don't like pictures of themselves I guess...but to just not like pictures in general? :confused3

I look at my pictures a lot. I spam my fb page after a vacation because it is the easiest way to get my pictures on my touchpad.

I love my photos on my phone too. Will look through them periodically just because I can.

I think "selfie" is pretty much my most-hated word at the moment. I am tired of seeing them in my Facebook feed and tired of seeing celebrity ones on Good Morning America and the like.

I can't say I've ever been compelled to take a true "selfie." I guess one time I wanted to show my new haircut to my mom and sister (sent via text...not broadcasted on social media).

I totally understand traveling and sightseeing and wanting your picture taken with something famous in the background...and not having someone else available to take your photo. But what I don't understand is a person's desire to take lots of pictures of themselves and blast them all over social media. I think social media has made some people very self centered. The way I see it, if I see something cool I want to take a picture of, I don't see how the picture would be at all improved by me putting my own mug in front of it before snapping the picture.

Or...another example...I have a mom friend who posts 6-8 "selfies" of her and her baby each day. I love seeing baby pictures...but she puts her own face next to her baby's in every.single.one. :confused3 Yes...it's her "right" to do this, I know I can block her...I'm just using this as an example to show how I just don't understand this selfie craze.

What are your thoughts?

I completely agree with you. My friends and I used to take them all the time before they were "a thing", but that was 20 years ago. It was more so we could have a picture of all of us when no one was around (and a challenge to get everyone in and see how good it came out when we got them developed.) Now they're just 'look at me look at me." Annoying.

So "good" when you did it, bad when others do it....makes sense. :rolleyes1

I admittedly take selfies. I'm in my 20s and it is definitely a "thing" among folks my age. I don't really mind them - sometimes they're eye-rolling worthy (even my own when I look back!) but I'm pretty good at absent mindedly scrolling by stuff. ;)

The difference is that when I did it, I wasn't alone, it wasn't just so I can show everyone how cute I am, and I wasn't posting it on the internet. So yes, it does make sense. :rolleyes1

Sorry! :flower3:

We didn't take pictures when I was a kid except on very rare occasions -- vacations barely qualified, and certainly not more than one 8 exposure roll. That was probably because film cost money, of which we had precisely none. For the same reason, pictures were rigidly posed, which I hated. By the time digital photography came around, I was a confirmed non-photograph person, and now I almost never think to get out the camera or my phone. Mrs. Tex is very close to the same, and for the same reasons, but she enjoys looking at other people's pictures.

Besides, all that editing and stuff is just too much work!
