Selfie Sticks?

But 14 hours of footage at 30 fps which could become hundreds of stills of strangers who pass you for just a few seconds is more than you should have a right to take.
Imagine all the stills Disney could make from the hours of video from multiple cameras...

I currently purchased a selfie stick, I have 3 small kids and I was looking at a couple pictures of the last couple of years and noticed that more than 80% of the time I wasn't in the picture because I am behind the camera. I was hoping the selfie stick would help with that. I didn't know until after I purchased it that it offended people so much. I don't use it on rides, I don't really want videos/pics on rides or during parades, but if the setting is right I would like the option to bring it out and get a quick photo with all of us in it.

I have read that you can ask people to take a picture of you, but some of us are shy. The idea of having to ask to ask strangers to take pictures of you all day gives me anxiety. Plus you dont know about the quality of the photo....what if they are in a hurry and the photo is blurry, you don't want to keep asking.

I have an SLR which is big and cumbersome sometimes, and annoying to lug around. A selfie stick is much more convinient, and I can upload my photos directly to my computer and delete them from my phone to save space, instead of dealing with SD cards. Plus this experience left me feeling terribly guilty a few months ago. We were at the Freeze The Night party and the kids were doing the stacking of the foam ice blocks. I was carrying my 19 month old and he kept pushing the buttons on the camera so I shifted onto my shoulder so it rested by my arm. I put my son down and watched for a minute or two and didn't think about the camera again until a small boy came runny by really fast and bumped right into me and hit his face right on my camera lens. My camera isn't one of those really huge ones, its a normal SLR with a stock lens, but still I knew that must have hurt. All I could do was apologize profusely while his mother examined him in front of me while giving me a total deathglare. I still feel bad about it now.

Wait, why would you apologize? Why would she give you a death glare? Why would you feel guilty? You did nothing wrong. Her child ran in to you. Kids do that. There isn't anything to be mad at you for if all you did was stand there with your children. I would have said "Are you alright? Make sure you watch where you are going." But then I'm a preschool teacher and I say that 20 times a day.

As for sticks on rides, I don't know why anyone would want to do that anyway. Aren't they worried about loosing their phone?

I'm sure people don't go to the park with the aim of filming you.
I think I have the right to film and take as many photos as I like for family memories, seeing as it is a long journey for us overseas all the while travelling with my ill 5 yr old daughter.
Many others would be in the same situation.
And it will be 60fps to 120fps, so much smoother:duck:
Nope. Your rights stop where mine begin. It is possible for people to photograph and video memories without strapping cameras to their head and pointing them at people while walking around or sitting on benches.

Imagine all the stills Disney could make from the hours of video from multiple cameras...
Well first, I agreed to let Disney photograph when I entered the park, not every other random stranger who decides to shoot 14 hours of video. Second, as a corporation there is a much greater chance that Disney has checks and balance and some accountability as to what people with access to their stills and video will do with it. Unlike an individual who takes it upon themselves to captures hundreds or thousands of images of a stranger.

.

I completely agree with this. But I feel the same way about the fact that while I might be trying to take a family photo that I might frame/display/treasure, someone is intentionally trying to ruin it by photobombing. I am completely baffled by the appeal of either of these actions....

Unfortunately it seems as though for every well intentioned person out there, there are two that are well...not.

Bottom line -- you really have no expectation of privacy out in public these days.

For the record, I don't want to be in your video. I understand that walking around in the park I will be in the background of some photos and people may shoot short video clips. But 14 hours of footage at 30 fps which could become hundreds of stills of strangers who pass you for just a few seconds is more than you should have a right to take.

You are in a public sphere and are not entitled to same level of privacy that you would expect in your own home or in private areas of the park, such as the restrooms. If you don't want to be caught for a few seconds in someone's home recordings, then please don't watch a parade. Both sides of the street face off in the digital equivalent of the Battle at Gettysburg. Everyone has their phone cameras and DSLRs out and ready for action! You could be in the backdrop for seventeen minutes or more!

Here's Main Street and thousands of people just-so-happen to be part of the video. I love seeing this because crowds are part and parcel to the memories of Disneyland. It would be eerie to see this video with empty sidewalks and silence, save for the piped-in music.

Perhaps eerie for Disney, but not for me. Ah....it would be a true dream of mine come true! The entire park to myself. Just awesome! :)

Take me with you!
I've been going since opening day. Way back when...... I remember the early years when it wasn't crowded like today.

Got it! :) Just don't make me wait in line. Lol ;)

I know everyone has their opinions, but i loved seeing cms enforcing no selfie sticks on rides. I don't care when you use it other places (except shows- that's annoying) but in rides it's just unsafe.

If someone shoots video of a parade and captures the people in the background that's different. They were intending to capture the parade and were hopefully focused on the parade. If someone is standing on the parade route shooting only the people in the crowd and happens to get some of the parade in the shots, that's different.

When a person straps a video camera to their head and walks around the park recording, or sits on a bench recording, they are not intending to shoot a parade or take pics of their family.

If a child was in waiting for the parade, twirling in her new princess dress and her underwear was exposed, how would you feel if you saw someone whip out their camera and take a picture of her. Now imagine that someone with a Go Pro on their head looks at that girl for 2 seconds and captures 100+ images of that scene. Think of how many times you've seen someone whose shorts were too short or too low on their waist in the park. Would you think it's appropriate to take photos or video of that? Anyone with a Go Pro on their head or concealed in their hand can easily do just that, intentional or not. There are thinks that I think we can all agree would not be appropriate to do with a camcorder or point and shoot camera that are not excused just because they now sell cameras that you can strap to your head and shoot continuous video and then easily break that down into individual frames.

Seems a little judgemental of people with gopro or with cameras.
My intentions with my gopro and camera is for my family only. People are going to get in my shots I am going to get in other people's shots and im sure my 5 yr old daughter will as well.
As well as on ride photos, someone will be taking home a picture of my daughter, as they were on that ride as well, no problems with that.

My camera is pointed at my daughter, as this trip is for her.

It is a public Park where magic happens and people want to video take pictures to remember that.
There is nothing stating on the Disneyland site you can't take pictures or videos. They would have a few unhappy people if they did.
I respect your opinion though SMD.

So many people these days take pictures of so many things (raising hand). Seeing the selfie sticks don't bother me. There are a lot of pictures growing up without my mom in them because she was the picture taker. If we had these back in the day, she would be in a lot of photos with us. She's been gone 20 years, and I don't have too many of her. I always think of this when I see people using the selfie stick for their photos.

I have no problem with people using selfie sticks for selfies with characters, family photos etc, nor do I have any problem with someone filming their entire park day/rides on a head mounted GoPro.

On our last trip, the people sitting on the curb in front of us were filming the whole parade on their GoPro on a stick. Even though they were in the front row with a perfect, unobstructed view, they still found the need to hold their GoPro right at camera level, so half of my photos were of a blurry GoPro. I eventually asked them to hold it a bit lower, but they looked really guilty and put it away altogether! Then I felt like the bad guy for the rest of the parade!

As with most things, I think it's more about being mindful of how using one for your own enjoyment will impact those around you.

Too damned funny man! Thanks for sharing.
Maybe support groups should be organized for selfieholics. Lol!

How big was the selfie stick you were using, CJLove79? From what I can see it on your video the camera doesn't look like it is extending much further than your arm..

Uh uh, no way man, that's not me. LOL. I don't do selfie sticks and I'm happy that they banned it from the attractions. LOL. I found this clip on YouTube and thought it was funny that the ride handler actually stopped the ride waaaay high in Expedition Everest to catch him. Selfies the good old fashioned way with what God gave you, your arms & hands, is good enough for me. :-)
