Selfie Sticks?

You nailed it right there. It's all about respect. Respect for the safety of the others on the ride with you. Respect for Disney's property. Respect for others being able to enjoy the ride throughout the day (not having the ride shut down for hours so the ride can be fixed and inspected for damages caused by your stick).

Unfortunately, respect is one of the manners/morals that is being lost in our society these days.

I have a gopro and the "selfie stick" is a must have. I don't use it for photos. But using it on the rides gives us great video of our kids on the rides. The cast members always remind us to keep them within the ride. We have never had a problem. We also use the gopro pole during the parades. Because we can get the gopro out further then the average person the parade charecters kinda cater to the camera. It's a nice personal touch. We have had characters wave, make funny faces, and make funny comments. I am not a fan of the whole selfie photos movement. But I am a fan of the gopro style of video. I would highly recommend getting one for a gopro.

We will be at the park in 9 days and I have a gopro and have been going back and forth on this exact topic. I have the extended pole for my gopro, it is only 14" but can extend to 24" although I don plan on full extension. Im wary of taking it adn having the cast members say I can't take it into the park.

Just spent 5 days at the parks - while I saw a few selfie sticks they were not a big deal at all. Didn't take up any extra space, the people using them (mostly teenagers) weren't getting in others space or using them on rides. I find them silly and try and not eye roll when I see people use them but they weren't an issue at all on our trip. Lots of rides have signs that say to not bring them on rides and I heard several CMs remind people using them in line to put them in their backpacks.

So in the end I would vote for selfie sticks over tripods - because those suckers take can be an issue in crowded spaces. I saw several close calls of tripods being knocked over and if they had been I couldn't really fault the person who ran into it because of the awkward placement of the tripod.

A selfie stick is simply a tool. It's a hand-held, one-legged, tripod (AKA monopod).

How you use it is completely up the "operator" of the tool. Used correctly and respectfully, I have no issue with the in-park use of sticks/monopods/tripod. People who use selfies sticks on rides or walking down the street (running into others) are similar to the lack of respect shown by the super serious photographer setting a tripod up on Main Street, during a parade, in front of other guests that diminishes the enjoyment of others.

These tools can be used respectfully, safely and appropriately; but not everyone does.

Yes respect and courtesy is they key. I use a gopro with a monopod as well sometimes and other people are always taken into consideration. It has no LCD screen at the back to distract people behind me, it's small and black and I don't walk around the park filming myself with it extended bumping into people. I might get the occasional self shot but it's all about good judgement and not being obnoxious and negatively impacting other people trying enjoy their time.

I was at the park last week and there is no problem using monopods or selfie sticks in the park itself. But they are banned from every attraction, even on the monorail you can't have your stick out - has to be put away. Also, they don't wait for someone to drop a stick on a ride to shut it down. BTMRR was shut down one afternoon, the CM said someone wouldn't put their selfie stick away while on the ride so they shut it down. Took an hour or so before they reset it to get it back online. Hopefully word will get around quickly and this will happen less and less.

They were everywhere yesterday. And the fact that signs barring them have to be posted all over... that says something about them. I totally understand wanting to take photos while visiting, etc... but these sticks, give me a break!

I was watching World of Color last night and there were tens of them just up in the air recording the whole thing. Why? Watch the show, create a memory to reflect on. How often will you actually watch these videos, World of Color or on the rides or whatever? Create the memory, remember it later and use it as fuel to want to go back. It, to me, makes it more magical to keep the image in my head along with the feeling I had.

My GF's son, who had never been on ToT, but had watched ride videos on youtube was blurting out all the "spoilers" of the pre ride show and exclaiming "oh! I know this!" and things like that. To me, that's no way to experience a ride for the first time. I'm sure people will have differing opinions to justify hundreds of videos being taken and found online of every nuance of every ride and part or every park. Anyhow, I'm turning this into a video rant rather than selfie stick rant but they do seem to go together.

That would really ruin WOC for me. I wish they would do something about that. It's a bad enough viewing area as it is. Throw in people hoisting things in the air and it really goes downhill.

Again I've said this too much but why do you feel the need to record the nighttime shows with these awful things???? No one wants to see your stupid footage when theirs plenty online plus you wouldn't be running it for anyone else

I only hate the selfish sticks when they get in MY way.

Sorry, but I'm not handing a total stranger my $600 iPhone 6. :)
Wow have you had some thing happen to you in the pass? Like some one running away with it>? Don't think they would get very far in Disney? This is the reason i will not own a cell phone, i want to stay in the moment when out and about, i love to talk to people. But am starting to see that is a thing of the pass, i see 4 people now a days eating dinner and all are on the cell phone as if? I will talk to you if nothing better coming my way? I just think its RUDE? I have handed my Camera ($1700 ) to lots of strangers all my life all over the world, and have taken other people cameras and taken pic. for them?

I'm not sure why this reply to someone not feeling comfortable with someone giving their pricey phone to someone, turned into a rant against people who own cellphones?

I already hate when I go to a concert and everyone is holding their phone in the air; I can't imagine how irritated I would become if I were trying to watch Fastasmic! or WOC and selfie sticks were sticking up in the air. Thank goodness they are banning these stupid things.

Cell phone peeps just don't get it, they are hooked on the phone like crack head is to crack, worried what total strangers just said and letting real life just pass them by? If me saying this makes you upset…GOOD... But most rude people always think its the other guy. Its just the world we live in i guess.

I just have a hard time understanding people who don't experience what is right in front of them!

I'd rather have the memory and have a great time than attempt to be a videographer, I guess.

I see there being room for both. I can especially see if a person pretty much dedicates one or more days to taking pictures and or video. Then spend the majority of your time without the picture/video taking.

I think most would turn it off….IF THEY ONLY COULD…LOL..And the cell phone peeps I'm talking to know this. They tell me this all the time when i say…Hey turn that thing off the real world miss you. All the peeps in their party start shaking there heads YES YES YES….LOL…Cell phone guy just keeps texting. Not even looking up at any of us?

While I don't video a parade, I do take A LOT of pictures. I take a lot of pictures throughout the park. I do this because chances are good that with my illness, I won't remember many of the details. I will definitely remember some of the highlights, but if I want details, I need to be able to go back through my photos to relive the moments.

That being said, I have never used a stick and I don't hold my camera up blocking the views of others.

Just wanted to explain that people do have different reasons for taking photos/videos.

I don't have a problem with anybody doing whatever they want as long as they are considerate to others. It's an issue when it seems like nearly all of the people in front of you are holding up a phone recording a performance/show, obstructing everyone's view behind them. I take photos on vacation, too, but not at others' expense.
