Selfie Sticks?

Why do you feel the need for a $ 600 phone anyway? Just curious.

I work in the financial industry building mobile applications. Apple Pay is a HUGE thing for us right now, so it was important for me for usability purposes; owning a newer model device is sort of a necessity in my line of work. Plus, I commute into the city on the train, so I use it as my "mini laptop", with my work email and music and anything else I need so I don't carry anything else.

The point is, you may not spend $600 on a phone or buy a selfie stick, but you're not me. :) Doesn't make my choices less "right" than yours or make me a narcissist.

I don't know why there is so much hate for these things when used sensibly. The thing I don't understand is why someone would be so stupid as to use these on a ride, particularly a fast ride like Big Thunder or even Splash Mountain. The clearances on those rides is sometimes quite tight and can barely manage a rider's outstretched arms, but add the extra length of a selfie-stick, and there is a good chance there will be some injuries - most likely not even to the person holding the stick, but to some innocent person behind them. It could even be fatal...

Lack of faith that people will actually use them sensibly?

We were on a Splash ride with someone hanging theirs outside the log. Everyone believes they are the one person who can do that without hitting anything.

Sorry, but I'm not handing a total stranger my $600 iPhone 6. :)

My camera and lens cost a lot more than that. And I hand it over to strangers in the park quite often. Nobody has run off with it yet.

I can see the importance of a phone like that, for the industry to which you work. It sounds very interesting and pretty exciting too.

I'm afraid it's not nearly as exciting as it sounds. ;)

Thank you for sharing but I'm not going to do that. Sorry.

That's very nice for your family. How are you making sure that your go-pro on a stick isn't impeding someone else's view or intruding on their experience. My DH uses a go-pro, too, but usually wears it on his head so it's not in anyone's way.
During the perades we usually set on the curb down Main Street. anyone behind us is standing so it's usually pretty forgiving. On the rides we keep it in our cart or boat. I've had many people ask me about my set up and it's always been positive. But I'm sure the gopro on the pole might bother some people. It's just like anything else though. When cell phones were the new thing on the market I remember people talking about how obnoxious they were. And how self centered the people were who used them. And now we break down if the battery goes dead. I think if you like it then use it. As long as you are respectful of others it should be fine. I personally would recommend the gopro pole. I couldn't be much help with the cell phone on a stick. I hope this helps.

Funny as I was going to buy one and bring it with me! As I see it yes definitely live in the moment for sure!! BUT pictures to me are everything and I hope to pass them along to my son when he gets older. Going down this time with my sister and our kids. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and we are celebrating her finale week of chemo. The point of the "selfie stick" is so you can get a better view of everyone and thing in the picture instead of asking someone to take your picture......something!

I assume these things fold up. And if they do, you can be sure that there will be folks that take them out the minute they are out of sight of the CM.

I wonder if that link contains a photo of the poster that said they used their selfie-stick with a GoPro on BTMRR...

Good move Disney!

I had not heard of these until I was in Waikiki in March. There were a lot of Japanese tourists with these.

I saw a fellow with his wife and two daughters on Luigi's Flying Tires with one. Frankly he looked ridiculous grinning at the camera the whole time and ignoring his family.
If your not where your at, your no place.

On our recent trip (which was terrible btw, and my faith in Disneyland customer service is now nonexistent, but thats for another post...), we witnessed 3 people in one small area using these stupid things, fully extended, taking video of the parade (not used for the selfie, but to get a higher vantage point to record it). 2 of them kept smacking people in the head with their sticks, and either not realizing it, or they were just inconsiderate. The 3rd person kept dropping theirs and gave up.

Other areasa throughout the park, we saw people regularly waling with them extended, and stopping on a dime in a moving crowd to take pics, seemingly unaware of everyone else.

I'm no fan of selfies, and the selfie stick is an absolutely horrible invention. It's unsafe, and makes a largely rude society even more rude. I'm not saying all selfie-takers and selfie stick users are bad - as long as theyre courteous, and aware.

Selfie sticks are merely another tool. Used correctly/respectfully, they are great tools. Used incorrectly, they can be rude intrusions into others personal space, much like the new video helicopters.

But... radios, cell phones and cameras at the same. You can blast a radio, buzz over my house/yard or take inappropriate photos of me and my family.

Saw them on rides, I think that is just plain bad as it takes away from other people riding who are distracted. Saw lots of people with them, always extended hooked on to their belts. Was quite funny!

I would never buy one, but even if I did I'd never bring it to Disney. They have so many photographer cast members on site who can take your pic, there's no point in carting one around.

Personal opinion of the selfie stick aside, I think banning these on rides (especially coasters and fast moving rides) is a logical move for Disney. There are just too many possible ways someone could accidentally injure themselves, a fellow rider, cause damage to the rides, etc. that it's not worth the risk of getting sued by someone or have a popular ride down for months for repairs to allow people to keep using them.

Agree, they are dangerous, distracting and they have to stop the ride every time someone drops them.

Just want to add that I didn't see ONE selfie stick in the Parks on our trip last month. I saw them being sold in downtown disney though on a kiosk cart...

Interesting. Disney allowing these selfi sticks to be sold at DtD, when they are now banned from being used at the Disney parks. I wonder how long Disney will continue to allow the sale of these sticks.

I don't think they are banned from the parks themselves just during rides. I would assume people can still use them during parades and everywhere else...I haven't been to the parks to confirm, but from what I've read it just says rides.
