Selfie sticks no longer allowed at Walt Disney World

Good reason to ban them is i see some idoit using them on a ride or something and then causing an accident

I don't think in and of themselves they are any worse than any other piece of camera equipment. The problem is people are more inclined to use them at inappropriate places like rides. Unfortunately people really do feel like when they are at Disney rules don't really apply and the CMs are always hesitant about enforcing them. The easy way out is to ban them but that only punishes the people who realize in front of the castle is okay but middle of Space Mountain is not.

THIS IS NOT MY PHOTO

I don't even own one, but I can't figure out why people hate them so much. We're at Disney every weekend and I've never seen someone hit by one nor have they ever bothered me. I just see people having fun taking fun pics of their family all at once.

I find it hard to believe that they're going to escort each person with one to guest services. Seems over kill and silly to me but I'm sure many people will quote me and tell me wrong I am. lol

Well, I won't tell you how wrong you are but I'll respectfully disagree. :)

It started for me when I was there last visit and trying to watch Wishes through the forest of selfie sticks people were holding above their heads to record it. Continued when I read the story about a DLR attraction getting shut down this week due to selfie stick use on the ride.

Basically, they get in the way of other guests' enjoyment enough that WDW obviously sees it as an issue, and I agree.

If you can't figure out why people hate them so much, take a look at the photo provided in post #24. You may have never seen such behavior, but it is happening and it is growing. Parades and fireworks shows are teeming with selfie sticks (and i-Pads) that range from an interference all the way to ruination of other peoples' views. They are a physical manifestation of the "my vacation is more important than your vacation" attitude that is growing like a cancer. "I don't care if your view is blocked so long as I get my perfect shot to upload to my 17 social media outlets." If you haven't seen such behavior it can only be because you aren't looking.

Now if they'd just ban holding kids on your shoulders during the parades and fireworks, I'd be all set. That annoys me much more than selfie sticks- although I'm glad to see them gone too. I've never understood the need to take photographs of yourself constantly. Seems a bit self absorbed to me.

This was a long time coming, but I am glad its here! Now I hope they enforce it as I think they will, as guests will be watching!

They are definitely popular, but have no place on the rides especially. It is a serious safety hazard.

I have no problem with them otherwise when used responsibly. Unfortunately, as others have said, it is always the irresponsible few who ruin it for all.

Until it's officially announced by Disney/or announced on the hubb. (cast website) don't assume it's true.

Walt Disney World is banning selfie-sticks from its theme parks, citing safety concerns, a company spokeswoman said Friday morning. Under a new policy, which takes effect Tuesday, the poles won’t make it past the bag check at any Disney World theme park. The sticks also won't be allowed in Disney World water parks or DisneyQuest, a gaming attraction at Downtown Disney.

Disney has officially added the selfie stick to the list of items not permitted inside its U.S. theme parks, the company confirmed on Friday.

When you get continually banged into, as you walk, by those using the selfie sticks, then yeah, it's time to do away with them. I'm not sure why so many people feel the need to document their walking in the parks. Try living in the moment!!! There are plenty of people out there who will gladly take a group photo of you....just ask. And the fireworks and parades? It would seem that everyone is 'entitled' to a perfect view...even if it compromises someone else's view. Can't tell you how many of those sticks are in my fireworks shots!
Not to mention the time, last month, that I watched a dad put his daughter up on his shoulders. He then took out the selfie stick...he shot himself with his dd on his shoulders....all during the fireworks. Seriously??? Just a video of your child watching the fireworks...no fireworks, that I could see, being taped!!!
So glad Disney has done this.
