Selfie Stick bans

With regards to the sticks, my son and I nearly got clocked twice by those sticks at AK. I have never gotten run over by strollers. The sticks are dangerous!

Yup....
Strollers are grounded.
"Selfish" sticks are not, and can be swung about with no regard for the safety of those near by.
If I or one of my party, get hit with one someone's going to be short a "selfish" stick and I'll call Security if they don't.
I've had enough of those cretins who think the World and everyone in it has to look out for them.

Flash photography in a dark queue or preshow area where people are walking is absolutely a safety hazard. I've narrowly averted more bone-crushing falls than I care to count because I was blinded by some idiot's flash.
It's also very effective against an iPad blocking my view, particularly the new ones with more reflective screens. One good pop of my speedlight right into the screen and bouncing into their eyes and they usually get the point. :)

I've had limited exposure to selfie-sticks, but all of it bad. At Disneyland last year, a teenager waved it in front of my camera which I had up to my eye to shoot. Disoriented, I pulled it away only to have the phone smack me in the face, then get caught in my strap, then go tumbling over the bridge at PoC. A CM saw the whole thing and immediately intervened, and I was okay as I wear glasses, but it would have gone right in my eye if I didn't.

I've used my monopod to similar effect as a selfie stick, and I also have a gorillapod, but never in crowds!

Can GoPro cameras still be used on rides (not on a stick)?

I can't imagine why not. If you are going to ban a camera that's not on a stick then I think you have to look at banning every kind of carry-on item there is. It simply wouldn't fly.

Even at the water parks, where you have not historically been allowed to use a stick, you can go down the water slides while hand-holding the camera.

Thanks! BTW, love your GoPro videos! Very well done and fun to watch! We just got a GoPro and I'm looking forward to using it on our trip in a couple of weeks.

Let's see, would I rather be hit in the head with a selfie stick or run over repeatedly by strollers?

It's a toss up!

I don't know why someone would want to lug an IPad around the park. We were at WDW two years ago and I couldn't believe how many I saw. One girl was in the row in front of me on Big Thunder Mountain with the iPad held high. I would have been really upset if I would have gotten hit with it. People need to use common sense.

I have never run over anyone with a stroller. I have, however, had to brake the stroller suddenly to avoid running into some self absorbed people either cutting right in front of me or with with their noses in a phone.

In all seriousness, can someone tell me what is so bad about selfie sticks? I don't own one and I almost never post photos on social media so I'm legitimately asking. When I was younger, in the pre-smart phone era, I traveled a lot, often with one other person. I have lots of photos of amazing places with just one person in them. It would have been great to have an easy way to get us both in our photos. If people use selfie sticks without harming anyone else, what's the issue?

The users are usually self-absorbed, and unaware of their surroundings.

My husband and I have pictures of both of us from all around the world over the last 20 years, all from asking strangers, "will you take our picture?" Or, if we didn't speak the local language just showing someone our camera and pantomiming taking a picture. No need for a selfie stick, and we've never gotten a blurry pic.

I have never been around these things so this will be an experience. As long as they don't hit me it shouldn't be a problem. I HOPE.

Please don't flame me but I will be taking a selfie stick with me to WDW in August. Not because i'm obsessed with taking pictures of myself but because i'm sick of handing my dSLR to someone and getting a blurry picture back because they don't know how to use my camera (yes this happens with memory maker CMs as well). I will not be holding it above my head nor will I be using it on rides, attractions or during parades. All I want is a picture of myself and my family that I can control and not cut anyone out of the picture because I have stupidly short t-rex arms. I am always aware of my surroundings and have never battered someone over the head willy nilly with a selfie stick.

Anyone flaming a person for using a selfie stick properly is just ignorant. Some people use them some don't. To make fun of someone for something you don't do is silly and pointless and makes them look petty. You don't build yourself up by tearing someone else down. I agree with the t- Rex arms. You want to get the entire shot in. You don't want to bother other people or trust them to get the angle you want. Photographers understand this. People who just take photos probably won't.

some of these posts make it sound like they are these annoying people all over the parks. That's not true. I see more go pros than selfie sticks.

There are so many annoying people at the parks and selfie sticks are like 1%.

I could make a list.

I have a selfie stick.

I would never use it or my camera or my iPhone while on a ride. It's rude. It's insane. It's disruptive. Seriously. Who does this on a ride? I have seen people use them and not bother anyone.

I?

Yes, this. I have one and will bring it. It has never occurred to me to use it on a ride or for a parade or anything. It's exactly what it's named for, to take pics of myself with my family and to get something cool in the background maybe. I'm short with short arms so without the selfie stick I can get my and maybe one other head in the photo, lol. Not all who use them are idiots.

As I said on a previous post, when I was there in December, I did not find the sticks an issue. Like everything else, there are a few people who will end up causing rules to be put into place that will affect everyone who uses them. (I do not use one and probably never will). It's like I tell my 4 year old grand daughter when she asks me "Why is xxx?" and I say, "Because some people obviously need someone to tell them how to behave".

Read my prior post.

Really?

Any kind of stick on a ride posts a real risk.
Simply put, rides are designed to keep guests safe, and to preserve the ride. Rides are designed so that guests - even those who do dumb things - can't hit their hands on any objects. Injuries are very bad, no matter HOW absurd the guest behaved.

You maybe noticed several parts of BTMRR have been removed over the years: the falling cave rock, the opossum. Guests used to try to touch these items. Items moving towards the guest are a big temptation, I guess.

Sticks - any sticks- extend guests' reach, and that is very dangerous for everyone. "Gee, it would be fun to poke [my sibling in the next car, that big rock, the railing] with my stick!"

Sadly, many folks just don't think they have to be accountable while they are on vacation.

If you need more proof just look online for dumb ways to die footage. Sadly, I don't think you'll have to look very hard. Even searching selfie stick+ death already yields results (selfie stick + snowboarding)

Sadly this is true, but maybe not in the way you are thinking.

Many folks don't think, "Gee, what I did was really dumb." They think, "Lawsuit! $$$"

Look at the warning stickers on almost any small home appliance, and you'll see a list of really dumb ideas: hairdryers, toasters.
