Self checkout needs a LIMIT!

My local Jewel (grocery store) has self check-out lanes with a full conveyor belt. They WANT people with carts full of food to use them. They also have 4 of them, and they've been around so long that most people know how to use them. I find that 9 times out of 10, they are MUCH faster than regular check-outs.

They never have them open at the Wal-Mart here. They closed them because there was too much theft when people were using them.

This is always what I thought when I saw those lanes. Must be a lot of theft. I'm shocked they even have them available.

I recently went through a self check-out line at Shaws. I did not have a lot of stuff at all and it took forever!

I will clarify that I have used self check-out lines a lot but this one had to be the worst. I would bag the item and then it kept telling me to take the item out, put the item back in...arggh!!!

Obviously the weight sensor was not working right. What got me was at one point the thing just entirely shut down. I waved for help, the thingy was blinking on top and no one came to help. 2 people were one aisle away chatting and they saw me and never came. The women behind me said I should get something for my time! Finally it started working again. But that will be the last time I use a self checkout at that store.

I must say the ones at Stop & Shop are great and I love their computer "buddy" system that lets you ring your items in as you shop. Also BJ's is great as well.

I use them all of the time- even with a full load. We have several self checks and half of them are express with 12 or under and the others have no limit.
I'm also much faster even with a full cart than any of the cashiers.
