I don't know, maybe I'm just looking at this wrong but aren't the self check-outs kind of like "express lanes"? That's where I go when I'm in a hurry at lunchtime, or after work and I only have a couple of things:confused3 There are 6 in the store near my work, I stopped in there just to get a case of Coke and naturally, all six were being used with maybe 5 other people including myself waiting. 4 of the registers had people that only had a few things but 2 where being used by women that had a whole shopping cart full of stuff:confused3 I just think it's inconsiderate to hog these registers up with a week's worth of groceries. Not to mention, isn't it a pain to check out all that stuff yourself? The little area that items need to be moved to after being scanned is only about 2 foot :confused3 OK, vent over:rotfl:

I've never seen them as express lanes and I don't think they are meant to be. All the Stop n Shops near me actually have a 12 items or less self checkout and then regular self checkouts.

At my grocery there are 2 self scan areas. One is very largely and clearly labeled Express: 10 items or fewer. The other says self service: all order sizes. I like this policy because it helps the express line to remain express. I personally never do self scan if I have a full cart. Too much hassle, and like you said, there's nowhere to put all the stuff between when you scan it and before it goes back in the cart.

I hate self-checkout and I refuse to use them. It seems that the times I HAVE used them, something always gets hung up or won't scan or needs a manager. Heck, in the time that I wasted just standing there waiting for someone to come fix it I could have gone through the "Express, 15 or less" aisle and been halfway across the parking lot.

Someone who parks their buggy there with $250 worth of groceries is just an idiot. :sad2:

I've never taken a rolling cart to self checkout, only a handheld basket. I guess I never really thought about anyone taking a full cart to one, nor have I seen it done. It would definitely strike me as odd.

Not that I know of. We have 6 self check lanes as well.

We have 2 express lanes that are not self check. One is for 12 items or less and the other is 20 items or less.

Where I go there are no signs saying express only, it's a free for all. It just says self check-out. I just think it's kind of a given not to take a whole cart full through there. While I am venting about the grocery store, I would also like to complain about people at the deli counter that park their stinkin' carts right up against the glass of the meat case, thereby making it difficult for others to look at the meats or pickup what they ordered from the counter. Just park your damn cart away from the case and walk up...it's that simple:snooty:

If they aren't designated as express lanes, why would someone think they are? They can be used by anyone for whatever they buy unless designated otherwise.

Not inconsiderate at all.

In our local store, the majority of the lanes are self-checkout lanes so unless you want to be stuck behind a ton of full carts in the 2 lone registers that are manned by a cashier, it's quicker to use the self-checkout, full cart or not.

The fastest lanes self-checkout or cashier, are the express lanes, so if you're in a hurry, that's the register you go to.

Personally, I hate the self-checkout registers. There is ALWAYS a glitch somewhere that holds it up and to be honest, for the prices our store charges, an actual person can ring me up. I've got no problem bagging my own stuff, I do it better than they do anyway.

I use them all the time and use a cart :duck:
Some have an item limit and some don't.
The grocery store I use them at has a revolving bag holder with 6 bags on it, so that is a lot of items.

No, I don't think so. My local supermarket has 6 st checkout lanes. Three of them are express lanes.

At one of my local grocery stores the self check out says limit 20 items, but at the other one (and at BJs warehouse club) there is NOT a limit.

I use the self check out because I am much faster at scanning and bagging the items myself than most of the cashiers are (I have experience cashiering at the grocery store back when they actually TRAINED us).

If you want fast, go to the express lane. Most customers, even the ones with only one or two items are NOT faster than the express line when they are faced with the self check out.

The "express" lanes at our walmart are all labeled "20 items or less"; I just assumed that the self checkouts were for the smallest orders. Most people that use them only have one or two items.

Except around a holiday such as memorial day or fourth of july. Then there is always a group of college guys with several cases of beer trying to figure the thing out. Takes them forever but they can be quite entertaining to watch. :rotfl: I have soooo wanted to ask them exactly what their major is because reading instructions is obviously not their strong point.

I frequently find the Express Lane closed during semi-light shopping times. It seems to be the last register they open when it gets busier.

I'm guessing I don't. I don't use them.

You think of them as express. Are they designated as express?

I think I already stated earlier that they are not designated as Express but you have a good night, Allison:wave2:

Don't you love it when a store has 15 lanes and 4 are open on a weekend with long lines. Our local grocery store doesn't have enough cashiers on hand.

No foolin'! I do tend to avoid the particular store where I know this is an issue if it's a busier time.
