Secured Credit Card

Why can't you use the debit card with the Visa logo? That's all I use. Is it the rental car company saying you can't use it? If so; I would just switch rental car companies. I have reservations with Dollar and Alamo and they both took my debit with visa logo as well as National. I think some companies won't take straight debit cards but the ones with the visa/mc logo should be accepted.

Good luck.

No two debit cards are the same.

Depending upon the policies of the issuing bank and/or the car rental company, a person could very easily find several hundred dollars of their vacation money locked-up for the duration of the trip as a "pre-authorization".

OP is being prudent in checking-out all available avenues...

I was thinking of doing the same thing for a rental car. I don't want a credit card for any other reason, but I don't want the hassle of trying to rent a car with a debit card.

On average, do you know how much of a deposit/hold a rental car company puts on a credit or debit card?

I'll definitely look into Alamo if I can avoid this completely!

It can be quite substantial Mrs. Charming.
Hertz will hold anywhere between $500 dollars to 3X the amount of the rental. We did this one time for a 10 day trip to Orlando. We got a great rate of $250 bucks for the 10 days and they tied up $700 bucks. :scared1: Plus they kept the hold on for nearly 2 weeks which I understand they are perfectly legit in doing so.

Now Orlando may be a bit extreme because of hte high volume of cars they probably rent and the high % of destroyed vehicles they get back. LOL.
Just do your research really carefully.
This would be my last resource when renting.

Holy cannoli. Yikes. Thanks for the heads up on that one!

The last time I rented a car and used my debit card they needed to run a credit report, which counts as a credit pull.

My aunt used Hertz rental when she was in Orlando. I was the primary driver of the car, but unless I was the one paying, there was a 15$ fee for secondary driver. I didn't have a CC with me, and if I used the debit card with visa logo a 200$ hold would be placed on the account, which I couldn't do. So we settled for paying the 15$ fee, and even though I was the one to return the car after dropping her off at the airport, I had no troubles with her CC on file.
