Secret Green Club - whatever number thread

Heather, I would definitely go for the nook or kindle, but NOT the nook color, the black and white versions are e-ink, not a backlit screen like a computer, so they don't affect migraines at all, and also don't have a bunch of glare outside, like my phone did this weekend reading outside... I really love the Nook, handling this return is a pain, but I can't imagine going very long without it, love having my library of downloaded books literally always at my fingertips. Mine is just wifi, so I can't download new books except in a wifi area, which my house is, for example. I originally wanted the 3g one, but the guy at the store talked me out of paying for that option, and I am glad, cause as he said, there is free wifi for it at home, my job, every B&N store, Panera, etc... the list is staggering. And really, most of the time when I am shopping for new "books" I am at home anyway, so probably wouldn't really use the 3G capability enough to be worth the extra $50. I have 133 books in my current library, though, and I regularly reread, so I keep them there for that reason too. Plus every Friday we get a friday free book, and about once a month I go out and search for free ones on B&N website. I COULD also go to other sites and download to the computer then upload to the nook, but never have yet.

I have the Kindle and I love it...It has it own internet with Amazon and you can buy books anywhere through Amazon, no need for Wi-Fi.

I love that it is e0ink and literally prints the words on the screen, from the underside, i believe that the black and white nook is the same way.... now for me most of my books are black print on white paper anyway, not much need for color for reading. I guess if you are looking at a magazine you might need color but opted away from that.

I read way too much now, so that is the one draw back.

I have the same nook at Kristi. Bummer Kristi. I love my nook and take it everywhere. My family isn't so happy with it, they think I read too much. :teeth:

Brandi-- after reading that page, I'm liking the D&B purses more but still a lot of money. I saw one of their purses at our new TJMaxx for sale for $99 but it wasn't a Disney one.

Rick nothing wrong with southpaws its just not working out so well for B. With his fingers wrapped he can't use his right hand for really anything & its too sore to put any pressure on yet. Had to buy him some new sweats and shorts so he wouldn't have to deal with buttons & zips. He hasn't gone back to school yet so he has to figure that out, but I suggested he have the teachers email their notes to him & take the computer if he wants to create his own notes. Come on 6 weeks.

Hey, from someone who is a southpaw, there is nothing wrong with it...besides, we are the only ones in our RIGHT minds....
:lmao:
I hate it when I agree with you!:lmao:
Wait....you are saying that you and I are in our right minds. You really ARE :lmao:

Thanks! the whole non-backlit screen makes sense, as light seems to be a trigger to my migraines as well. I hate lugging books around, esp. cause I wind up with a bigger purse than I really need.

Thanks Brandi! I appreciate the input. Is your Kindle good outside in bright sunlight too? That is very important to me, as I will use it a lot at Chris's baseball practice, the park, etc.

Yes you can easily read it in sunlight....it is the only that has the commercial where the girl is reading by the pool and tells the guy that her sunglasses cost more than her Kindle... I read it outside all the time waiting for trains

Cool! Thanks!

Mary and Brandi, Rick will tell you that I read too much too. I don't know that having the Nook has increased it or not, I have pretty much always read 5-7 books per week. But it definitely makes it REALLY easy to get something new, no need to run to the bookstore, etc. ;o)

Heather, my parents both have the Kindle and I think they are pretty close to the same, the kindle has actual keyboard vs the nook's touchscreen area, but the reading screen is about the same size, works the same way. Their books are formatted differently, so can't easily cross over between a Kindle and Nook, it can be done, but would have to download the kindle book to a computer, reformat it to ebook format, then upload it. Needless to say, this limits the book sharing with my mom! I believe Kindle has now gained lend capability and also library access, Brandi can you verify? It did not have that capability when I got mine, only Nook did. The other big plus is that if/when the battery completely dies, I can go to the BN store and replace the battery, vs having to send the entire kindle to Amazon and have the case opened, battery replaced, resealed, and sent back. However, I am now proof that not everything is as easy as just go to the store. If you are getting one, I vote for either the Kindle or Nook, not one of the PanDigital or whatevers, they are often cheaper and easy to find, but are backlit screens on all the ones I have seen.

Happy Anniversary Kelly and Big Daddy!!
Thank you!!!
:lmao::lmao::lmao: I'm shocked we made it 14 years...... :lovestruc:lovestruc:lovestruc

I have a Kindle. I read it everywhere...I LOVE that I can start a book on the kindle....and continue to read from the APP on my phone....is automatically syncs!!!!!

I have the $139 kindle... and the leather case with the light. Both were $200... but I LOVE the lighted case.... it's not that bulky (some people complain)

I don't know about library renting yet....I was using my sony ereader for that.... but the kindle didn't have access... supposedly there's a way to convert it over for the kindle. I think the program is Calibre

I have a few books I bought from B&N.... but I'd have to pay for the program to bypass the DRM restrictions....I'll just rebuy the books if I want them that bad.

You can only 'lend' a book once...ever.

If you and a family member use the same Amazon account though...you have the same library.... no lending needed. you just have to watch the one click buy.... cause it only charges one credit card...you can change the card if you purchase the kindle books online.

wow...that was a novel. LOL

The main reason I choose the kindle...was because my B&N was scheduled to close after that bankruptcy.

Mary my fingers are crossed for a cast free Disney
mine too!!!

Oh no!
Hope he is cast free for Disney!

That stinks, Kristi! Does the Nook affect your migraines? I had wanted one, but my eye Dr suggested I stick with paper books, as my migraines tend to stem from looking at a computer screen for work all day. A nook sure would be easier, though!
Heather.... I have no problems reading the Kindle..it really is just like looking at a normal page.

ONly if you get the 3G version. the $139 version needs wifi :)

I've had no issues in the sun either.

As for the school issue. I'm waiting until next year. I have no idea who her counselor would be.... they have multiple...and they have been restructuring over the last few months.

I was more pissed that they were trying to tell the kid that what she's doing is basically no big deal. That's she's doing it to benefit financially..

Wow, quite the Kindle/Nook conversation. I'm embarrassed that as a former librarian, I rarely get around to reading books, and I don't have a Kindle or Nook.
I am feeling better today. It's just so darn hard to get up in the morning. Once I get moving, I feel a lot better.
Julia and her GF are over tonight. We're watching the 9 Desperate Housewives we have on the dvr. That's what I do instead of reading.
Hope Brandon heals quickly. Disney is always great, but it's better without a cast.

I need to just put something out there for my my Limey friends. I am at an out patient surgery center this morning. They just took David back into the back room to have an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. You have to be put under for this because they put the tubes down your throat.

This the second one he has had in two years. They found pre cancer cells called Barretts disease last time. He has been on his meddle and we are not expecting bad news.

David's family has a history of aversion to the sedation, his grandfather died from being but under and David has had some bad effects, not waking up when he should from previous surgeries. He had a nightmare last night that he did not wake up from surgery.

So I know that there is always a chance that something could go wrong, but you don't want to think about it. Then when your strong husband is scared and you have to be the strong one it just breaks your heart to see him hurting.

So he should be out in about 4 hours

Hang in there Brandi! Must be so scary for you! Keep us posted and I'll keep thinking good thoughts for you!

 Brandi. Please do update us here. Prays and Pixie dust coming your way!

Brandi, :grouphug: to you and your husband! That's really scary, I don't blame you for feeling rather freaked out by it. We'll be praying here that everything goes smoothly and he wakes up when expected!

Kelly, I think the lend feature works different on Nook than Kindle, then, cause I can lend more than once per title, and have even lent the same title to my sister more than once from it. Unfortunately, mine does NOT sync to my phone, wish it did, that would make it easier! I switch between the two and right now am using my phone too, but generally I load a different book from the library to the phone app, and just have 2 titles open between the 2 devices.

Danielle, shame!!! J/K, I can't imagine living without books, but I recognize that others are not as addicted to reading as I am.

Happy Anniversary, Kelly!!!!

Ok, so now I just need to decide I want to spend the $$$. Are book prices similar on the Nook and Kindle? When you borrow from the Library, do you have a 2 week time limit, or do you get longer on one or ther other>

Thanks, Peeps!:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

The library option isn't one I have gotten to yet, either, but I believe it is 14 days. I think the prices for books is pretty comparable between the two. For the Nook, new releases (books in hard back only in stores) are generally between 9.99-19.99, while books that would generally be paperbacks are less, normal range from $3-$9 (Nora Roberts, for example, is usually around $6.99, not sure why). Also there are always free books as well as books under $5 listings. I have probably 30 books that I have added as free books, and in at least 2 cases, after reading the free one I really liked the series, so bought the next couple from the series. In my case they were $2.99 and $4.99 for the next books in the series. And then B&N has a friday free book that is a newer book every week, I usually get these too, though not always...

(((Brandi))) Hope everything goes well for your dh.

Heather I agree with everyone either get a Nook or a Kindle. Go to B&N's & Amazon's websites and check them out. Compare prices & specs of the models. Look at the book lists and see which one has books you're more likely to read.

Kristi-- I tend to go on reading spurts. I try to limit myself to magazines because when I read I tend to only want to do that & nothing else so everything gets neglected. I also find myself staying up all hours of the night. This nook is making it too easy to be bad again. LOL

I do love that I can whip it out ( :teeth:) anywhere.

Had a class at my other building today. Came back to a big rally --- getting close again to the Gov possibly shutting down. :( Hope that doesn't happen.
