Hello,
I was just wondering if there is anything that can be used on a 13 month old to prevent seasickness? I was reading on another post about how rough the first day can be and would really like to try to avoid any unpleasantness. I will ask the doctor when he goes for his 1 year check up but would like to hear responses from people who have experience with this.Thank you. :teeth:

From what I understand, it is very unusual for children (and babies) to get sea sick. I don't know why, but it seems to be limited to adults. I would ask your pediatrician about it tho.

good luck

My DD who gets car sick easily was 3 when we sailed. She did not have a problem on the ship and kept asking when it was going to sail.

My pediatrician recommended benadryl if we needed something. I think the best thing for you to do is ask the dr.

I just asked the pediatrician about this yesterday at DD's 2 yr check up. He does not recommend that children this age take anything. In fact, he doesn't even really want DD9 or DD11 to take anything. The good news is that children rarely have problems with seasickness, though. I don't know, but we'll find out in two more weeks! I am taking bonine, chewable dramamine, sea bands, everything for me though! I can get dizzy just watching the merry go round. I don't even think about riding it! :rotfl2:

One recommendation I have heard is ginger snaps and ginger candies. Ginger helps settle the stomach so bring along some ginger snaps for DS to snack on during rough seas.

I actually saw soft ginger cookies at the store yesterday and had wondered if that might work. I myself usually pick-up something at the health food store.I like the cookie idea better than having to give him medicine. :earsgirl:

our Pediatrician recommended Benadryl for our younger DSs car sickness....I imagine it would work similarly for cruise motion sickness

Is that why I have read that people give Benadryl before flying?

Just to let you know that I took our DD who was 14 months on RCL last year and it was very rough the first night. It did not bother her one bit neither did it bother my DS (5), of course I was the one a little queasy. So I would agree with everyone else when they say you shouldn't have a problem. :)

GINGER DROPS!!!! LOL Any health food store should carry them. It's pure ginger that I add to apple juice for the kids. My kids (all 4 of them) get terrible car sickness. UGH! This works so well and is masked by the juice.

Altoid makes ginger candies from pure ginger. OMG you'd better luv ginger! But be sure to check the ingredients of items claiming to be ginger. You need real ginger, not ginger flavor.

I hit the net for some research (the RN in me  ) Seems like ginger is okay for >2. See http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsHerbs/Gingerch.html

Always be careful with 'natural supplements'. Most aren't regulated by anyone . It's more likely that they would do nothing...than that they would be harmful, but you never know. Especially with our littliest ones. Remember 'natural' does not mean 'harmless'. Cyanide occurs naturally ;)

All that said...I do appreciate the suggestion. Both my DS10 and I share touchy travelling tummies :sad2: I agree about limiting medicines if possible. I might have to try it...

our pediatrician recommended green apples, along with beneryl. our DSs were 2 & 4 at the time. our DS4 was fine, but we thought our DS2 might be feeling a bit "queasy". i was a bit queasy. this was all on the first night. our DS2 didn't feel like eating, and that was so not like him! so we gave him some green apple slices to eat, and he was fine! i had some green apple slices as well, and felt much better afterwards. no problem! it worked for us! try it, they're just apples! :flower:

Even Nurse Penny can get behind the apples idea ;) An apple a day...keeps the seasickness away? :rotfl:

Not sure if this was mentioned but take some ginger ale with you. They don't offer it as a beverage selection on the ship. We stopped at the Publix grocery store not that far from the ship and picked up ginger ale and ginger snaps just in case one of us got sick.

Foods okay to bring onboard as long as it is unopen, right?

Okay...I'm starting to worry a bit :guilty: Is seasickness common? We cruised for our honeymoom (13 years ago) and I took dramamine the first day....so I slept the first day

I do get motion sick pretty easily....
