Searching out drunks in a bar???? Rediculous!!!

So, are you all suggesting that if the police see somebody with a gun threatening to kill somebody, they should just wait until he actually pulls the trigger? After all, they just "might" commit a crime in the future.
If the police arrest someone getting into a car to drive or threatening to drive while intoxicated, your analogy would apply.

Being drunk does not mean you are threatening to drive or that you are threatening to jump off a balcony.

Why stop there, why not arrest people who attempt to buy over a certain amount of liquor at one time in a store?

I can totally understand how what these police were doing can be seen as a "big brother" thing or more than just a bit overboard...

but then I think about stuff like this:

and this:

And think...we have to do something to stop this kind of stuff.

I'm sure there are probably better ways to accomplish that.
Please do not assume that people who disagree with this practice do not understand the dangers of drinking and driving.

The threads you show illustrate people who have been arrested MULTIPLE times for drinking and driving. You can blame a very weak court system for allowing these people free to do this over and over.

I really do not want to be punished for what other idiots do.

Really, I wasn't making assumptions and I didn't intend my post to come off that way...

I do understand your point of view...I guess I'm just thinking along the lines of "an ounce of prevention..." Even though it was the court system that failed.

Perhaps if there were more specific "limits" of what constitutes public intoxication...or specific "rules" of when an arrest is warranted (does that makes sense? :confused3 ).

As indicated above, the law only applies to people who are SO drunk that they are a danger to themselves or others. The offense carries a fine only, of up to $500, no jail time; but the person may be arrested and have to bail out.

Don't we want the police to prevent crime?

That's a LOADED question.....Get it? :rotfl2: :teeth:

No, I understand what you are saying but the point is to prevent drunk driving right? So, I am all for tougher laws, sobriety checkpoints...many, many of them. Arresting peope who get into a vehicle to drive while drunk..

But, arresting people for public intoxication, without any proof that they were going to drive, in a bar does what? It will keep people out of bars and they will get drunk at home...then they may get into a car and drive, if they are inclined to do so.

This sounds like a great idea. After they are done with that, they should start going into people's homes and arresting anyone that has kitchen knives. Afterall, some people are stabbed to death. We don't want to take any chances. :sad2: They apparently have too much time on their hands.

Lisa

LOL!!!!

I saw this on the news last night and DH turned and said "being drunk in a bar is public intoxication?"

I can't tell you how many times I've been drunk in a bar, in my younger years of course, but I was never the driver.
This is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm. Is that even possible to do?

This is apparently the Texan way of thinking. Isn't this why we got into the war in Iraq....as a "preventative" measure?

It seems reasonable to me. There's a difference between drinking in a bar and being flat out drunk. It makes sense to me that the police would keep watch on this, since bartenders can also get in trouble for continuing to serve alcohol to those who are drunk. As someone else pointed out, they weren't taking blood alcohol levels - they were arresting visibly drunk and probably disorderly people, or they would have had a LOT more arrests.

It really seems no different to me than a drunk driving checkpoint where they're pulling everyone over. Also not that different than patroling neighborhoods just in case they spot a problem. Also very similar to speed traps. Sure it's irritating to be caught breaking the law, but it's not unreasonable for the police to actually be looking for lawbreakers. IMO, law enforcement is not always simply reacting to reports, sometimes it's about being a visible presence.

This was on the news here. I have to admit I am disgusted.

A few people who were arrested... were done so at a hotel bar. The hotel they were staying at.

I can understand the worry of drinking and driving. I am a parent. I worry about it.... But it is perfectly legal to be intoxicated at home. Now how many people become that way at home and then get in their cars and drive. What about family violence that comes into play because of this?

This is not something all Texans are proud of. I for one am embarrassed.

Believe me.. Dallas/Texas has a lot more issues that should be addressed before this is even a thought.

:sad2:

First they try to prevent smoking in bars. Now they are trying to prevent drinking in bars.

Next it'll be no talking or leaving with members of the opposite sex.

Perhaps everyone can go to bars to study EPA reports.

You mean we have to leave with the same sex? Wouldn't that mean they would be promoting gay bars? :teeth:

OK, I ammend my statement to:

...No leaving in order to have you-know-what with a partner of your choosing.

I'm not getting into all THAT. That's another thread! :teeth:

I was sitting wondering just when exactly did Dallas turn into Mayberry??

Arrest drunk people causing a disturbance...driving a car...beating their wives/children. But to pre-arrest someone, before they've done anything more than sit in a bar and drink, is just way too over-the-top.

I'm quite sure the Dallas police department has better ways of spending their time/budget.

If I lived there, I'd be complaining to someone who could do something about it, instead of commenting on a message board.

I never knew that drinking inside of a bar was considered "public intoxication".. Interesting..

I say stand out in the parking lot and nab them as they get in their cars..
