Reading the Sea Sickness thread makes me a little nervous. We're considering booking our first-ever cruise in June 2005. We don't have anybody in the family who is particularly susceptable to motion sickness....e.g., nobody gets car sickness under normal circumstances. Several of us avoid spinning and other wild rides though. I'm trying to figure out how much of a problem sea sickness might be. The cruise is a huge investment.....I'd hate to spend all of that and then have 1 or 2 of us not feel good for the whole week. Please provide your input!

There were six of us from my family that cruised this past August. My DW has a very weak stomach, cannot even ride the merry-go-round at WDW without getting a queezy feeling in her stomach. Much to her surprise, she didn't have any problem on the ship all week. We had two boxes of bonine with us, and never opened either box.

i voted for only w/very rough seas. and this was not so bad that i had to spend the day in my cabin hangin' my over the rail!!

I have cruised 3 times on the Magic (Eastern) and once to Alaska -
and Alaska caused me a problem but not on the Magic. I had read that the night going out (Saturday) and one coming back can be a bit rougher (can't remember if it is Thursday before Castaway or Friday back to Port) so I take Bonine those days and that is all. My DH has a huge problem with motion sickness (always has to drive and takes Bonine prior to flying) and he did take a pill each day but didn't have any problems. My kids have never had a problem.

4 cruises, no sea sickness, no medication, no special precautions--HAD A GREAT TIME REGARDLESS OF THE WAVES!!

ENJOY yourselves!~!

With a Transderm Scop patch behind my ear, I have no problems at all. Without it, I would be leaning over the railing.

I voted for 'Only when rough seas' - but that's only because we were in a hurricane last cruise & I got terribly sick for a couple of hours. No problem! I'd do it again anyway. Just another experience to me.

The remainder of that cruise & the four other cruises before it were all NO problem & I suffer from vertigo on land sometimes. My husband can't take spinning rides or such & he's NEVER felt queasy or nauseous at all on any of the cruises.

My kids never have had a problem either & my one son gets car sick.

Go & have a WONDERful time.

I also voted for only when rough seas. I took Meclazine through out the entire cruise but probably only needed it on the first night and the 2nd night when it was really rough. My older DS has a very weak stomach and only took it the 1st and 2nd night. Was fine the rest of the time.

you shouldn't have any problem at all...
the caribbean is very smooth in june....
we sailed on july 4th with very smooth seas and didn't have any problems with motion sickness..
and that's despite the fact that my daughter and i have very very very serious motion sickness problems on dry land....
i did come prepared with bonine (dramamine 2), and my daughter took it (one per day)....
but i didn't take it (i'm not allowed to because of drug interaction issues)...
but i didn't need it....and take my word for it, i have very very very great difficulties with motion sickness....
i was VERY worried about it before our cruise...but it was fine...
i never had a problem at all...
the only time we sensed any motion was at the very beginning of the cruise (the first evening) and the end (the last evening) as the ship crossed the gulf stream....but it was only very mild movement....most people probably didn't even notice it...but it wasn't nauseating or anything like that..

bottom line, you should be perfectly fine if you cruise in june...

The only time we had a problem, was the first night when we hit really rough waters. I was concerned until we went to a show that night, and one of the CM's said, "I wish the captain would stop rocking the boat." Even they were having a hard time keeping their place on stage. We went to guest services took some of the little "wonder" pills, and were great for the rest of the cruise. :boat:

i know not to step foot on a boat unless it is moving very fast, otherwise the choppiness makes me get sick. i also have motion sickness in the car sometimes. i was worried like you that i'd be out for the count. but thankfully we had a very smooth trip and only felt movement when we were walking in the hallways, we couldn't even tell when we were sitting down. have a great time on your cruise.

I was heavily armed with sea sickness meds and the wrist bands on our first cruise. I do not like boats and DH gets sea sick. So yeah we booked a 7 night western ( go figure) , and I never opened any of them, came home with all the meds unopened.

I thought it might be a problem because as a teen I was very seasick on an overnight trip on a very large ferry. Luckily we were asleep in our room most of the time. Coming back though was during the day and I just remember feeling yuck the entire time. SO on our 3 day cruise last year I was nervous but didn't bring anything with me---probably stupid I didn't. But 17 years later I was hopeful. Our ship got a late start so we didn't set sail until we were well into dinner at Animator's. I kept asking my hubby if that was the ship I felt moving. I wasn't sure at first if I liked the feel of it. But by that night I was fine. The entire cruise was perfect. We were on Deck 5 and loved the "rolling" around that we felt at night. Our 2nd cruise we went for 4 days and were on Deck 2. My oldest was disappointed because we weren't lulled to sleep each night. We were actually looking forward to the movement but never really felt much of anything. I suppose it has to do with the time of year too.

So everything went well for us. Hope it does for you too! Debi

by the way, it took us a week AFTER the cruise to stop feeling motion.....
that is, we didn't really feel any motion at all on the ship...except for some very pleasant rocking..
but after we got off the ship, my daugther and i were feeling movement for a full week.....very weird, but i've heard not uncommon....

On our 3 Disney cruises, none of us 4 had ANY problems on the ship except dw when back on land. :( It took her a month to get rid of that ROCKING feeling. She took bonine every day on the cruise(no problems) but had to keep taking every day till it went away.

I wear seabands and take bonine and do okay. I get visually ill, so I try not to watch the front of the ship when I walk on the upper deck. It's that up and down, up and down that gets to me!

Love to sleep with the rocking though - like a big cradle!

Rae

Edited to add:
Yes, "landsickness" - continuing to feel motion after you get to land - we get it too! MD says it takes time for the brain to settle down! Now that is direct confirmation that I do have one!!!

LOL After our first cruise we went to WDW and stayed at The Boardwalk for 5 days. I remember that effect of feeling it after you get off the ship. I ran into walls for days!! :D

I'm fine on the ship. When in port or when we return home I feel the land rocking for a few days. It doesn't make me sick, and when it goes away after a few days I miss it.

Hi I can't go on the spinning rides or rollercoasters (skipped Mission Space @ Epcot too). We did have rough seas our first night out on our Wonder 3 night cruise, I got a little seasick but nothing bad, my MIL was pretty ill the first night. The last night I wasn't able to sleep, the seas were "VERY ROUGH" swells of 15-20 feet or more, according to the channel that keeps you updated of the conditions of the seas. The cabin was creaking and rolling hard. It was when we were crossing the area where the current changes?? I also heard that we had a stabilizer that wasn't working. But the rest of the time I could handle it fine. I would like to go on a 7 night cruise, just because the 3 night didn't seem long enough. I just want to make sure and go when there is less of a chance of rough seas. I'm wondering if going at a certain time lessens those chances?? :yo-yo:
