We are hoping to rent Sea Raycers from the Poly or Contemporary marina. It looks like they only fit two people though. There are five of us...two adults and three kids. Our daughter is 13 and it sounds like she is technically allowed to drive (age 12 and over). Has anyone’s younger teen driven a Sea Raycers? Are they easy to control? Thanks!

They are easy to control but there are rules of the waterways that she may struggle with. There are areas that are off limits; there are areas where you have to avoid the launches and ferries. There are areas where you can only idle, no wake is allowed. You are asked to stay a certain distance from the shorelines. If she is confident with boating and being on the water she may be OK, but if she is a novice you might want to reconsider.

The sea raycers do only fit two people. We went as two adults and had a lot of fun. Maybe you can prep her beforehand on some of the rules of boating like the PP mentioned: knowing when to go idle with no wake, staying to the right and out of another boat’s way, being gentle if there is a wake, things like that.

They really don’t go very fast but if you go over a larger boat’s wake be super careful. We went over a speedboat’s wake and got completely drenched and our boat filled with water. We didn’t do it on purpose and it was a rare thing to have happen. They normally don’t come through that fast but they were having an emergency and had to get there quickly.

With one of the Adults riding with her to help point out the boating rules on Bay Lake/Seven Seas Lagoon, she should be fine.:)

(Unless things have changed, under 16 year old drivers must have a 16 year or older licensed driver as the passenger.)

Our son has been piloting one solo every trip since he turned 12. Yes, they are very easy to control and quite fun!

What is the weight limit in these boats? Also a 15 yr old does have to be with a licensed driver in one? Sorry just want to clarify before we go in case we decide to do them.

320 lbs.

No. You have to be at least 12 and have a parent/guardian sign a waiver to drive one solo.
I will say they don’t enforce that weight limit at all. Dh and I were well over 320 pounds and still drove in it just fine

We definitely are more than 320 - more like 350 but I am on the fence about letting her do it. I don’t think I want us both in the same boat though.

If you think she’ll be fine I wouldn’t be worried either

I should have said she should be fine - typo there. I highly doubt we will do it but if we have a free afternoon - maybe we will. I know she would love it. I would do the worrying from a boat behind her I’m sure

If it makes you feel better you do have to wear a life jacket.
