Todays poll question is:
Have you ever owned Sea Monkeys (AKA floating pieces of dust)?

When we were younger, my brother and I once convinced our parents to let us send in the back of a comic book, and a couple of bucks for our very own magical world of Sea Monkeys. So we sent in the required elements, and waited for a few weeks, every day running to the mail box, anxiously awaiting our new pets.
Finally one day THEY came. With breathless nervousness we opened the envelope, and lovingly placed them inside their new home, a glass fish bowl. For once we weren't fighting. We were so excited about this wonderful adventure we were about to embark on, that nothing else mattered. They weren't His sea monkeys, or my sea monkeys, they were OUR sea monkeys. We finally found something that we could take care of together.
We had a little bit of trouble seeing as the Sea Monkeys began mixing with the water, because our faces were so close that our breath began to fog up the glass. We waited for the amazing transformation to take place. Waited for our new pets to start frockling around in their glass home, just like it showed on the back of the comic book. Waited for something to happen, and yet all we saw was a bunch of dust-like particles floating around the water. What happened, did they mistakingly send us the wrong package?
It wasn't until a couple of hours later, after nothing else happened that we finally decided to read the instructions, and found out in the small print that the actuall Sea Monkeys were a lot smaller than they appeared on the back of the ad.
Well, we waited a couple of days to see if anything else would happen. It didn't so eventually we just flushed the whole community of floating dust down the toilet and went back to our normal routine of fighting over whose bottle of soda was whose.

Ah, you flushed them too soon. We got Sea Monkeys for my son for xmas. It took a couple of days to see anything and then they were tiny squiggly little specks. But they DO get bigger. Mine....er I mean my son's....are about 1/4 inch long now and they move pretty fast. We have about 10 in our tank now. But when they were tiny we probably had around 50. They're really cool actually. :thumbsup2

ETA: We even had a second set of "hatchlings" but I don't know what happened to them. One day you could see a bunch of the squiggly specks and the next time I looked they were gone. So I don't know if they died or just grew up quickly. We've obviously had a bunch die since we at one point had about 50 and now we're down to about 10. The 10 number has been steady though for the last several weeks.

OMG I LOVED my sea monkeys!!:rotfl: but yeah you flushed them too soon. I may have to go buy more sea monkeys now

I had them as a kid. I haven't braved Sea Monkeys as a parent yet. They are just brine shrimp, right? We can go see them at the Brookfield Zoo.

Why go to the zoo when you can see them at home? :rotfl: They have little kits at Target and they are very cute. We got my son the tank with the martian theme.

not as a kid, but I (8DD) have them now. We have 3 large adults. about 1/2 in long, and a few tiny hatchlings. I think we've had them for about 5 weeks now.

I have always wondered what in the world sea monkeys are. :confused3  :)

Everytime I think about Sea Monkeys I think about that episode of South Park.:rotfl:

How cute! We had brine shrimp when I was a kid. We fed them to our fish. I know that my DD would love sea monkeys in her room. How much are the sets?

I was duped too as a kid! Those advertisements were way misleading. I thought I would actually have a family of seamonkeys that would lead cute little lives in their seamonkey castle. Then to find out that they are just brine shrimp!!!!

I've seen the kits at Target, too. I may just have to get them for my kids too. It's a rite of childhood passage, along with Pop Rocks and Jiffy Pop Popcorn. Thanks for the memory.

I actually got my husband some Sea Monkeys for Christmas. He had never had them as a kid and, as some of you said, it's a rite of passage so I couldn't let him miss out.

We started out with a bunch but now we're down to three "big ones" and a little baby. I'm not sure what happened to them all. I hope these hang in there! :confused3

Yeah, I still feel resentful about that.

the set DD bought was $12 . It is the pink tank and came with a little necklace (small plastic 1/2 bubble)that you can put them in It's called the Seamonkeys Friendship Locket. The store had a larger tank that looked like a castle, it was 14. The plain tank was 8 I believe.

When I was a kid I put my SeaMonkeys in a large clear glass near the kitchen window. After about a week, the glass was gone. Turns out my dad thought it was just a dirty glass that was soaking, and he threw them out. I still haven't forgiven him for that!! I bought my DD some SeaMonkeys a few years ago and we had great success, we had 2 or 3 that reached almost an inch long and lasted for several months. You MUST read the instructions!! You have to feed them regularly and take care of them, just like any other pets. As far as what happens to the little ones, I think the big ones eat them if they don't have enough food.

What a lovely story...the sibling bonding, the excitement of the unknown...

I think ours was even less than $10. We should probably get a bigger tank. We got these for our son and I swear I get more enjoyment out of them than he does. :rotfl:
Yes- I had Sea Monkey's as a kid and my cousin drank them. :sad1:
I remember that story and it totally skeeves me out everytime I look at the tank. :crazy2:
