sd cards / xd cards

hi

what is the difference?

i am looking at getting the olympus tough camera which takes an xd card. my other camera takes an sd card. so i wondered what the difference is and would anyone recommend this camera

It is completely different card style. I thought Olympus and Fuji were working them out of their line up. Many of the Fujis will take both. Olympus and Fuji are the only two that use XD cards, so the price of the cards is not as good as SD. It is a bit tough to find a range of XD cards. A couple of card makers I know of have stopped producing XD and are speecial order only.
 
Fuji has started to move away from xD cards, I think all their current crop of cameras take both xD and SD cards.

SD cards are cheaper, available in larger capacities, and often faster. This is a definite drawback to the Olympus, unfortunately.
 
Just my $.02, but if you really like the Olympus, I wouldn't let the fact that it uses xD cards scare you away. I have a 5MP Olympus point-and-shoot that I bought about 5 years ago and it still takes amazing photos that often rival my DSLR. You can still find xD cards plenty of places, and once you've bought a few, it's not like you're going to need to replace them very often.
