Hi all. I am starting my Christmas shopping. One of the items on my list is scrapbooking supplies for an 8 y/o. Only thing she has so far is construction paper, plain scissors and glue. Any ideas on what to get? Thank you for all the suggestions.

Themed paper, especially to coordinate with her hobbies; all sorts of stickers, paper cutter, embellishments, and don't forget a nice scrapbook to hold her finished pages. The list is endless! If you have a Hobby Lobby or a Michaels near you, visit them and have at it! Be prepared, though, as these items can quickly add up to lots of money.

My kids love using my scrapbooking stuff. Especially my Mara Stewart punches and my stamps. You can use a Michaels 40% off coupon from most Sunday papers and get the punches for around 5 or 6 dollars each. You can find rubber stamps and ink pads in their Dollar spot. Thisnweekend Michaels had several marked down to 50 cents.

If your budget allows, my kids also love using my cuttlebug. That's more expensive though, around $45 with the coupon. Then you'd still have to purchase dies and embossing folders.

Sissors that cut patterns, like pinking shears, are also used often and don't cost much.

Good luck with this and have fun!

Construction paper and reg. glue are more craft supplies and generally aren't considered scrapbooking supplies since they aren't usually good to use with photos. A basic kit with album, paper, and stickers can sometimes be found for a steal at JoAnn or Michaels w/40% off coupon. A 12in paper trimmer and dry adhesive(like a taperunner) would also be nice for a beginner. Another fun gadget is a Xyron sticker Maker(around $10 before coupon).

Lots of stickers! If you have a hobby lobby near you, watch their ad because they will usually have all stickers for 50% off. The alphabets are also nice!

Also, if you want the scrapbook to last, make sure the construction paper is acid free. The acid will eat away and fade everything in a few years! If it's not acid free, cardstock is also a good thing to get.

Those scissors with the different cuts/edges are a lot of fun to use! I know friskars makes some. Usually the dollar store will have them too.

Check Micheals clearance for scrapbooking kits on clearance...or if you have today's coupon, 50% off. The kits can be a great deal. (I saw some nice American Girl kits when I was there recently--about $11 or so with the coupon).

If you have an Ollie's Outlet near you, check them out for really cheap scrapbooking supplies. It's not a large section but they always have something different at really low prices.

Since you are starting your shopping with plenty of time, you can get things on sale easily. Michael's, Joann's, and Hobby Lobby all run papers, albums, adhesives, stickers and all the other fun stuff about 50% off on a regular basis. Individual papers can run 50-75% off.

The items should be acid-free, so be careful with the glue and construction paper that they currently have. They won't archive the items well if they aren't acid-free.

My Michael's always has a clearance section where everything is on clearance and then an additional 25% off. Also check out www.scrapbuck.com they have great deals!

I would not use construction paper as it fades really bad and is not photo safe. :goodvibes

You can also check Craigslist - I have found quite a few posts by people who have given up the hobby and sell their basic supplies for a steal! This could give your DD a base stock of papers and tools. I concur with earlier posters as well - leading up to Christmas - I am sure to use my 40% coupon every week. There are some kits for kids to get started with an album, stickers, paper, etc.

I would recomend getting her a basic album to begin with (they often have many for 50% off in the clearance at Michaels). Then I would get a pack of solid basic colors then some fun colors. As PP's have said, construction paper is no good because it's not acid free. Personally I don't like super themed paper because I find it difficult to use. I prefer solids and patterned colors over theme, but that's just me. I would also recomend a 12 inch straight edge paper cutter, not only for the scrapbooking, but I find it invaluable with school projects over the years.

As for crazy scizzors or punches, it really depends on your daughter on that one. Again I have found I don't care for the crazy scizzors because I can never cut in a straight line, but I love punches. But I know some people love the crazy scizzors so you never know.

I would love to help you. I co-owned a Scrapbook store in NC many years ago. When we had the unpleasant experience of having to close, we simply boxed up much of our inventory and stored it in a climate controlled space. We have just recently begun to tackle the process of cleaning out. While we could never use all of the supplies ourselves, we are slowly giving most of it away. This may seem foolish, but there is more joy for us to "gift" the supplies than to make money off of them.
If you pm me, we can start the ribbon rolling....I am talking albums, paper, scissors, adhesives, stickers, ribbons, brads and the list goes on. I have been blessed many times in the past by a stranger's kindness and look for ways to continue the blessings.
There is no catch, no strings and no cost....just let me "Pay it Forward":santa:

I agree with this..regular acid free scrapbook paper and glue meant for photos are cheap and would nice for her to be able to keep her projects well in the future.

If you are talking regular construction paper you would not want to use it for a scrapbook as it fades.

Ideas- decorative edged scissors, Paper punches, small album with extra page incerts, stickles, stickers, glue dots, tape runner. Depending on your budget a cuttlebug with some embossing plates, ribbon, stamps, stamp pad.

Just check out Michaels or JoAnns or any craft place they have something on sale each week in their scrapbook section.

You might want to consider a container or organizer for her to store it.

Wow! How nice of you! :goodvibes What a great example for us all!

That's awesome of her to want to give you stuff. It's not the cheapest of hobbies. I agree with most about Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Joanns. You can also find coupons for each place on the internet on their websites. They make album kits that come with albums, papers, stickers, etc. They make several different sizes. Tape runners are better than tape. I personally like the Tombo ones. I've also seen a couple of scrapbook kits at Target. Good Luck. I'm sure she will love all that you get. :thumbsup2
