I have never done an official scrapbook but would like to start. The last time I went to WDW (2yrs ago) I took kids construction paper and stickers to decorate my photos and placed it in an album. Now I keep reading about "acid free" why is this important? Will the regular construction paper I used last time eventually ruin my photos? If yes then when, a few more years or only after I die?;) Also, I will be going back to WDW next week and would like ideas on what I should buy there to start this hobby. Thank you.

Actually you are in good company here and there really aren't any dumb questions. We are all learning from each other all the time.

You are correct in understanding the regular kids' craft type construction paper will damage your photos. How soon depends on a lot of things. But ultimately the more regular paper (which contains acid) that comes in contact with your photos the sooner and more severe the damage can be. (Consultants please feel free to expand or correct that basic statement :) )

Assuming you're not in your 90s or in serious poor health probably sooner than when you die. The photos can turn color (I just saw an album where the pics were "rescued" but were all quite red in color), lose color all together or become quite brittle. The older "magnetic" glue strip albums are killers too.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying anything while in WDW unless you see a specific album or something you want. Look for that acid free, lignin free notation. Once you're back get in touch with a Creative Memories rep or visit your Local Scrapbook Store (LSS) and you're likely to find everything you need including lots of Disney paper, stickers, etc.

Do try some of the hints you'll find on this board such as putting brochures, tickets, KTTW cards, etc. into big envelopes and making some notes on them. These then tuck easily into the suitcase on the way home and provide trim (keep that non-acid free paper away from the photos though) and inspiration.

And of course when you're ready to start hop on the board for ideas and inspiration!

Good luck and have fun - just fair warning that this hobby is VERY addictive! :p

The one thing you might want to buy there is the Disney Scrapbook, you can't find it anywhere else...you might want to just use a normal scrapbook, but those Disney ones are really cute! Just make sure everything you get is acid free, very important!! Also...save EVERYTHING for really interesting layouts...like cool napkins from the restaurants, tickets, trinkets etc. Make sure to keep a really good written journal while you are there of all the fun things you do, funny things that were said and feelings everyone had. That is what makes a scrapbook really unique...the journaling! Have fun! :)
