My Handy Dandy Simpsons Calender says it's a Holiday in Scotland tommorrow, and unfortunately for me all it says is "Holiday, Scotland". I know we some Scottish Friends here on the DIS, so I was wondering what said Holiday is and why you'll be celebrating..

Don't say it's a bank holiday.. ;)

All I know is that the Scots have always had an extra day after New Years Day, I don't really know the full reasons behind it. I will ask Scottish hubby when he comes back later. Personally I think it could be because of the famous Hogmaney celebrations and maybe they need an extra day to recover!:thumbsup2

Many banks and shops are open tomorrow in Scotland so it doesn't have the full public holiday feel of prior years.

Don't worry though we get one less bank holiday so we are even with our neighbours :goodvibes

It most probably extends from the tradition that Hogmany and celebrations lasting many days was the norm rather than Christmas.
In fact MIL still provides a parcel for the troops as it was their tradition to open presents at New Year not Christmas :confused3

Enjoy your Jan 2nd bank holiday all our Scottish friends:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

A few years back when I worked in the bank they tried to bring us in line with the English and only give us one day off at New Year but after a couple of years they re introduced the holiday as it was so quiet.

My Dh works in the Bank and he has the day off but he hasn't got much to recover from yet:cool1:

Usually we go back to work on the 3rd of January. Instead of me getting Good Friday and Easter Monday, I only get the Monday. With the day coming off there.
