Scotland for a Weekend - Please help!

My boyfriend is studying abroad in Newcastle and is planning on visiting Scotland for a quick trip w/ some of his friends. They're only going to be there 2 days. Could someone suggest places for him to visit that he shouldn't miss. They are all in their late 20's and would probably enjoy a visit to any famous/or just really fun pubs or restaurants too! Thanks for your help!

Edinburgh is about 2 1/2 hours drive away with Glasgow only 3 hours.
