Can someone explain to me in detail the process of having your own scooter and going thru security? I see strollers going thru the scanners with bags all the times, but I've never seen what happens when you have your own scooter. My dad will be traveling to Orlando in May and I think it would be better to take his own and have it 24/7 vs. renting one and not getting it till he emerges from MCO. Thanks!

You will still have to unload any packages/shoes/pockets. Then, If he can walk they will have him walk thru the scanner and they will drive his scooter thru a gate to the other side and proceed to examine/swipe it. If he cannot walk he will drive it thru the gate and have to transfrer to a seat to have a hand search while they search the scooter. it does take a few extra minutes, but you will be directed to a seperate area so you don't slow down others. make sure your whole group goes together so they can help him with his personal property. We travel often with a teen in a w/c and my Mother in a scooter and we have this down to a science. The worst part really is expaining to my autistic teen that its ok for them to pat him *down there*! he is at the point he would rather use the scanner if he is up to a short walk that day.

It really isn't very hard to do, like Krisnme said. Just allow yourself extra time to get through there. I have flown with mine 3 times and soon a 4th and never had any problems. If your Dad can walk enough to go through the scanner, then he should be allowed if he likes. They would then take the scooter over and run the screens on it that they need to and return it to him on the other side of the scanner. If they don't allow him to use the scanner, then just be patient and allow them to do what they need to.
