scooter lock

Does anyone lock up their scooter when not in use? My son just got a new scooter. My husband found out that a lot of the same keys can operate a scooter, he is worried about theft accidentally and purposely. What do you do to ensure that no one takes your scooter? We were thinking of taking a bike lock and folding seat down and somehow wrap to chain to steering wheel. I know it seems over-protective but my husband thinks it entirely possible that someone would buy extra keys and just go in to take scooters to resell them. I don't agree but I told him that I would ask. For what it is worth though on our last cruise elderly people were getting on wrong scooters by dining room all the time and complaining to wait staff someone stole their scooter. I think when you have so many scooters from same rental company all sitting next to each other and key works on all of them it can be honest mistake.

Actual scooter theft is rare at Disney. It's more likely someone might accidentally take a scooter if it's the same model/similar to theirs. The best way to avoid this is to bring something colorful (like a scarf, ribbon, etc.) and tie it to the scooter handle. The more unique the item, the better. This helps to "customize" your scooter to avoid someone else taking it by accident.

Locking a scooter can cause problems since cast members periodically "neaten up" the scooter/stroller parking area. If the scooter is locked so it can't be moved, it's possible the scooter could be damaged accidentally when a CM tries to move it.

Another thing to consider is hiding a tracking device on the scooter so you can at least find it if it was moved or accidentally taken by someone else. I've used Tile tracking devices in the past, but I'm thinking about AirTags for my next trip. These tracking devices have apps for your smart phone that let you track your device. I don't know the full details about AirTags, but with a Tile tracker the app has the ability to tell you where your tracker is and to play a sound on the tracker, which would be helpful in finding it once you got closer.

The only time we've had a scooter suddenly go missing was at the end of the night at Jungle Cruise and....our WDW-rented scooter was gone. After talking to a cast member about it, one was sent to us and we were given a no-strings for our inconvenience.

But I definitely recommend making your scooter more unique and recognizable so someone doesn't take it by accident. I have a minnie scarf that I tie around the front basket. Also, a previous comment is correct: sometimes CMs have to move scooters to tidy up an area, like at Haunted Mansion. In some instances, when you leave the scooter to board an attraction, it has to be moved to the exit area in a different location. Rise of the Resistance is a good example of this.

if the CM needs to move your scooter they will cut the lock seen it done a few times ( with stroller ) I would take the recommendation of @Lizgistix and make your stand out in someway

locking down the set so that no one can sit on it but it can still be moved my CM might work

I have been taking my own scooter for years to WDW parks without any issue. Decorate your scooter as your own so it no longer looks generic. I also hang a plastic tag to the handle as identification since I fly with it. You can also place some painters tape over the keyhole while you are away from it so a surprise shower doesn’t get water into the key area. If it looks like rain, I also tie a poncho over the controls, as well as fold down the seat.

I tie a bright pink bandana around the handle of mine (the one I rented) in the parks. I've found that if anyone takes a scooter, it's just a mistaken identity. Also. I've found that sometimes the CM at the end of a ride will offer to wheel my scooter over to me (or in Jiko, our server did, as they have a parking place for scooters). Rather than having them hunt and guess, I can just say "It's the one with the pink bandana on it." Now don't y'all be stealing my bandana!

Definitely don't use a bike lock to lock it to a fence or a pole. If a CM needs to move it, they will call security and cut the lock to move it where it needs to go. A lot of places if you take the scooter to the ride, you will need to give it to the CM and they will park it and move it around frequently. (Thinking of Kilimanjaro).

Definitely decorate the scooter in some way so you can distinguish it from others. As someone else said, it will give you a way to identify the scooter to CMs so they can bring it to you.

Last trip I brought an old tshirt (something bright) to slip over the back of the seat. Easy and it's a big marker. I wouldn't put on a cute mickey shirt cause I'd be concern that would disappear.

I have never locked my scooter (actually anywhere I go - including NYC) but do personalize both my own and any WDW rental. Something simple like a bandana on the basket works - I usually put a jacket on the back of the seat that's pink or purple so I can spot it from a distance - especially after it's been moved. They get moved quite a lot. So while duplicate keys are possible, i'm not thinking many people would try to steal one.. and with the sheer # of scooters - finding yours to take would probably be like being struck by lightening in the shower.

I’ve replaced scooter key locks with more secure options. It’s also possible to wire a battery disconnect switch inline with battery. To be honest though, it’s an overthought concern.

The amount of surveillance in the parks would gag a casino boss and everyone entering the park gets their identity verified. It’s just not a great shopping ground for a thief looking to stay out of jail. When touring the park with my wheelie-enhanced friend we don’t think twice about leaving it parked for hours at a time and this chair costs more than the average Tesla.

A nice compromise is to hide an AirTag in the thing somewhere discreet.

While Disney may have quite a bit of security, there may be other places people take their ECVs that don't have the same level of security. Could be any number of places, like local theme parks, cruises (although now a days they have more than Disney in most cases), etc. Where you sometimes do have to leave your device somewhere for a little while.

Air tags only work for those with iPhones, so knowing what some of the other more secure options for replacing the keys with would be really helpful for all in my opinion.

Actually... it is possible to use AirTags with Android devices.

However, Tile is another well-known alternative to AirTags.

This is another reason why I don't bring my personal scooter. I know this sound bad, but one of the reasons I rent from Gold Mobility is that they provide full coverage theft, damage and cancellation insurance for free with their scooter rental. The insurance has a $0 Deductible if the scooter gets lost, stolen, or sustains any kind of damage at all. When I did my research no other company offer that type of full coverage. I like that fact that I'm not worried, and that I'm liability free especially since we travel in groups of 4 scooters or more normally. The only issue is our personal items being taken out of the front basket when left unattended. That has happened to us on several occasions.

From what DH has heard, Gold Mobility is working on a solution for theft from the front basket, which would be nice.

But there is a key difference between them, Tile relies on other people in the area of where the Tile is to have the Tile App and be willing to share information. AirTags send their location no matter where they are.

Last two trips I used a backpack on the back of the seat with no issues or theft of items except a squirrel took my pack of peanut butter crackers out of the cup holder. I actually watched him walk away with it. lol
I'm sorry to be OT here, but did you use any special backpack or just a regular one on the back of the seat? I've tried a backpack, but it kept slipping off. Perhaps I just picked the wrong kind.

Thanks everyone for the reminder to "mark" my scooter. Last trip I tied a bandanna to it. Worked nicely!

Last trip I tried a bungie cord around the back and hung the back pack on that. But it was squishing the seat. I was afraid I would do damage to the chair.

I wonder if using a regular backpack but add a strip of velcro to conect the arms in front. I may not be explaining myself well.
