Scoliosis screening at school?

I don't see a reason, need to exempt your child. It is not an invasive procedure. My DD gets her vision checked every year by her optomoligist but she still does the vision screen when they have it at school, no big deal IMO.

I don't know what he was looking for but he missed some seriously crooked teeth there!
They are not looking for crooked teeth, they are looking for cavities/decay.

I know that they are looking for decay, but they are also looking for any malocclusions or teeth that need further evaluation by a orthodontist or other dental professional. There are several choices that they check off on the notice they send home after the screening and nothing was even noted about her double tooth/misalignment when there was a space to indicate that's what they found.

Well, if given a choice, I would have gladly taken my shirt off for the school nurse for a few minutes.....instead of having YEARS of back trouble. Not to mention all the medical people in the hospital that got to see me at 13 yrs old with NO SHIRT or BRA while I was in the hospital for 2 weeks having surgery.

Believe me........THAT was anxiety!!!

Agree.....I was never tested in school for scholosis, but have had sever back pain for years. Just last year at the age of 24 I was diagnosed with sever double curve scolosis. (I had a hunch thru the years that my spine wasn't perfectly straight, because I was told I walk funny.) Apparently it started when I was a teenager. Had it been discovered back then, I probably would have worn a back brace to correct the problem. Now my curves are so bad, that I just have to live with it. Upper (thoratic) curve is 45% and my lower (lumbar) curve is 38%. (The degree of my curves almost warrents corrective back surgery, but my orthopedic doctor advised against it. If the curves get any worse, then I will have to have surgery.)

I don't look forward to pregnancy, as I don't know how my back will handle all the extra weight. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.....

I dreaded it just as badly in middle school. But the bright side was dance class after school so I just wore my dance clothes under my jeans and nobody was the wiser

I only remember being tested for Scoliosis in elementry school and in middle school and in middle school they tested us when we had the swimming unit in gym!

Diznee25, mine was also a double curve. I'm 40 now, & it is starting to become very visible to other people again -- even with the rod & surgery. My shoulder blade is "winging" out again.

We don't have children. One reason was because I was advised how difficult a pregnancy would be on my back AND the years of carrying & lifting a child.
MY DH has to carry all the groceries & laundry up & down the stairs. (My SIL's sister also has a rod - & spent weeks in bed at end of pregnancy.)

I'm 40....sometimes think & feel like a senior citizen. We are moving next year to a 1 story condo, because in the future I doubt I will be able to handle our 3 stories if DH wasn't around.

Scoliosis SUCKS! I know. I would never wish it on anyone.

When my school started screening, they held an assembly to explain to the kids. I GLADLY got up there & was their model. And if I could help but just ONE person from having to have surgery...... I would do ANYTHING.

For those of you already diagnosed with scoliosis, see a chiropractor!! I was diagnosed at 13 with an "s" curve. I don't remember the degree, but I do remember the doctors saying that I would need a back brace to control it. My parents took me to a chiropractor to see what they could do, and when I went back to the other doctor, they were shocked to see that my curvature decreased! I now see the chiropractor every 3 months (I am now 36) and I live fairly pain and symptom free.

We were tested by the school nurse and some other doctor/medical professional in the nurses's room, behind a screen. I was young, and embarrassed, but it was no different to me than being at the doctor's office having a physical? And I remember being checked for it in my physicals too. In my small class, quite honestly, if my mom had "exempted" me, it would have made me MORE embarrassed because I wouldn't have been like all the rest of the girls. :guilty:

I'd much rather have my child checked and double checked than not checked and there to be a problem down the road. I guess I don't see what the problem is because my experience wasn't embarassing. :confused3 Those screenings found scoliosis in two of my classmates! Thank goodness they caught it early!
