ScoJo's Running Down a Dream Journal (comments welcome)

Hi Scott! Congrats on the WI! :cheer2: I have a love/hate relationship with my scale. Currently it is in the not love state :furious:

I started running through Team in Training and completed three marathons with them. It is a great program! The training part is very well done, at least in my area, and the research, etc. work that they fund is really good as well. The Leukemia & Lymphoma society funded the researcher that developed Gleevec, a fabulous new chemo drug with substantially reduced side effects. Check out an info meeting and ask some questions to get a feel for the group in your area. If it is a large organization (and I think it is in your area), then it will be well run. TNT also is really helpful with the fundraising and you would be surprised at what you can raise. The comaradarie of running with the group is great. I have made some lifelong friends from this group.

I know some other organizations also do training programs. In our area other groups are heart society, diabetes (more of a walk program), and Challenged Athletes. Check out your local running store and see if there is a bulletin board with fliers.

Have fun on your 6 miler this weekend!

ETA: finally got caught up on Lost - OMG!

Hey Scott! Thanks for the Mother's Day WISHes! I seem to be following you around today ;).

Have a great day....and let us know how the 6 miler went!!

Hi Scott!!!! I read your 6 miler report over on the events run/walk thread. WOW!!![/B]  :cheer2: INCREDIBLE SUPER AMAZING splits!!! I am sooo jealous LOL :p , my run today was not stellar. But I am really REALLY excited for you!!! You are going to be awesome in the Peach Tree!!! I can't believe you broke 60 on your first ever 10K distance!!! :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: .

Hope you had a great weekend with DW and DD!!!

Thanks for the M'Day wishes, Scott! You made my day, as you were the ONLY one who even mentioned it to me!!

You'll have to come do the run here - there's a 10K that is ALL UP HILL!!!! (but it starts at a nice casino :cool1: ) Or there is one during the summer that is a run from the base to the TOP of the mountain - to about 16K ft! It's ONLY 8 miles, though on trails up the sides that twist & turn! Wanna try it???? Some day when I have someone to go with and a day, I'm going to venture up walking and bring the tram down. I hear it's beautiful!! (Gotta watch out for BEARS & Mountain Lions this time of year, though - NOT kidding!! - They're HUNGRY!!)

Hi Scott....

Congrats on your WI...that is great news!!!  :cheer2: :cheer2:
It is weird that what the scale does even when we don't make the best of choices....

Keep up the great work!!! Have a great day :)

Hello! Big update today with all kinds of various information just because I feel like typing! :woohoo:

RealityTV update: Spoilers ahead!! Read with caution...Survivor ended without a bang. I can say for the first time that I'm starting to get bored with the show...I'll still watch it but it isn't on the must see the same night list. MoJo was booted from Amazing Race and I liked them...here's hoping the hippies can pull one out on Wednesday night. AR is still the show that I'd love to be on (travel, extreme stunts, etc). Lost (I know it's not reality but it's close enough)...last Wednesday was a tad disappointing but I know it is just setting up the storylines for the season ender. American Idol - so rocker Chris is going to be in Fuel, more power to him...although he was pretty good on the show, he sounds like every other alt-rocker out there from the past ten years (Creed, Live, etc) and I think he will rapidly fall into obscurity. Please, please, please don't let that Elliot kid win. He can't sing!! And June 21st we get to choose who will live in the Big Brother house this summer from an all-star cast! Can't wait!

K...that's out of my system....on to the shout out portion of today's post:

Amy - thanks! Keep me posted if you join TnT or go to the meeting...I looked at the website and they do a lot for you in return for raising money for the chairity. The one in Georgia is currently training for four events. They are definitely on my radar. Hope you had a nice Mother's Day.

Tracy - Scale bashing...hmmm....gotta keep that in mind!! Wonder if the fitness center would be upset if I started wailing on the scale :rotfl:

Anna - thanks for the info on TnT and advice to go check out the fliers at the running store. Congrats on completing three marathons with them!! That's awesome!

Julie - Um....what the heck makes you think that I WANT to run up hills ?? :rotfl2: Those races sound grueling!! But I bet there is a huge sense of accomplishment from finishing one of them....I may be more inclined to belly up to the Hold 'em table though :teeth:

Everyone else - thanks as always for the support! Makes this whole process not only beneficial, but FUN! thanks!

Here's the update for today...

Thursday May 11th
I didn't feel too great going into Thursday's run. For starters, I was developing a condition in a sensitive part of my chest....let's just say that it is caused by sweating a lot in cotton shirts which in turn causes chafing and extreme sensitivity (TMI!!). Some quick research found that this is a very common issue among men and they make products to help out, most noteably something called Body Glide. REI carries it but I'd have to do with a temporary remedy of vaseline and/or a bandaid until I can get over to the REI store. On top of that, my legs were a little sore and my back was aching more than normal. I think Sunday's bike ride with my daughter caused an issue with my bulging disc and the daily exercise since then has done nothing but aggravate it. With all of that said, I still felt good enough to get a run in so I set out for a 45 minute 4r/1w. All was well until around 15 minutes in. I was really struggling with aches and pains...my calves hurt, my thighs hurt, my shins hurt, my feet hurt, my back hurt (ok, you get the picture) so I started walking longer and longer at a time until I completely ruled out running somewhere around the 30 minute mark. I walked the rest of the way back to the house where I even had difficulty doing my post-run stretches. For the record I did 3.95 miles in 47:04 (11:55 avg mile, 176/153 HR).

For the first time in my training, I was very concerned about my back. To keep a long story short, I battled a bulging disc injury that was pushing on my sciatic nerve for the better part of the last two years. It was painful to walk during that time and I bet that I single-handedly kept Motrin in business. Magically the pain subsided in September and I haven't had any issues since. The injury is still there but my body has somehow adapted to it. I was extrememly sedentary due to the difficulty walking and running and I put on around 10-15 pounds as a result.

So there I was on the couch hoping that I hadn't re-injured myself to the point of not being able to do this any longer. I took some pain killers and rested for the remainder of the night.

Friday May 12th
Things felt a little better in the morning. Legs were still a sore and my back had a dull ache but nothing that I couldn't tolerate. I popped a couple Motrin anyway and decided to take the day off and let my body rest.

Saturday May 13th
I was faced with the dilemma of either scrapping my 6 mile run, delaying it a day or going ahead with it. I usually do my long weekend at the same trail but had to find a new place due to a festival being held at that trail. The new park where I was going to run had just a 1/2 mile loop so I figured that if I did try and run and something happened, I could make it back to the car pretty easily. So I strapped on the heart monitor, strategically placed a band-aid, popped two Motrin and set off to run further than I ever have in my life.

The track at Hobgood Park is a paved 1/2 mile circle around baseball fields. It's mostly flat but does have a 20ft. elevation change (geesh...really sweating the details here, eh?). There were softball tournaments taking place so the park was alive with activity when I got there. I did a one lap warm up and began my run. I felt no aches or pains, had a good pace and some nice rhythmic breathing. The first few miles flew by....my splits were 9:00/9:44/9:48...I felt myself slowing down a little during mile 4, I finished it in 10:23...but then tried to pick the pace back up during mile 5 and did, coming in at 10:05. Mile 6 wasn't as tough as it was just tiring...I had circled the same spot 10 times and was conscious of having been out there for nearly an hour. I just wanted to get it over with so I picked up the pace again and ended up finishing that last mile in 9:54. I completed the 6 miles (4r/1w) in 58:54!! I was extremely pleased to come in under an hour, especially with how I felt the past few days.

I wanted to make sure I relaxed a little after the run so I decided to take my daughter to the movies. Not to get all off topic or anything, but the theater ended up being a promotion-fest. Let me explain....we wanted to see the Disney/Pixar movie called 'The Wild'. As we made our way to the box office, a theater employee asked my daughter if she'd like a free poster. Never to pass up anything free, we thanked him and admired our new poster of the upcoming release called 'Over the Hedge'. Before I could place my ticket order, another worker approached me and said "free posters for the kids and free t-shirts for the adults" Free t-shirt?? I don't even have to run a 5k to get it?? Then she handed me a shiny red Coca-Cola shirt wrapped in plastic and said "don't forget to check out the petting zoo at the end of the parking lot after the movie!". Petting zoo? What the heck was going on here today?? Turns out they were doing a massive Over the Hedge promo with t-shirts, posters, petting zoo, coloring activities and face painting. Sure did add some excitement to a normal trip to the movies!

Anyway, after the movies I was still feeling good so daughter and I decided to take the dog for a walk to the lake by our house....tack on a 2 mile walk in addition to the 6 mile run!

I capped the succesful day off with a few beers and some poker with the neighborhood buddies.

Sunday May14th - Happy Mother's Day!

I woke up and was a little hesitant to move, fearing pain from either my back or my legs or both. Other than a little soreness in my calves, everything felt pretty good! It was an off day with only some light house cleaning and some backyard frisbee with the dog & kid on the exercise schedule.

So after the scare of last week's back pain it's time to get back at it. I won't throw caution to the wind though...if I feel anything abnormal with the back or legs, I'll take it easy and make sure that I don't make it worse. There is a 5k this Saturday that I want to run if possible. I didn't sign up in advance so it can be a Friday night decision. Other than that I think the week will look like this:

Monday - 45 minute 4r/1w
Tuesday - 40 minute elliptical
Wednesday - 40 minute elliptical
Thursday - 45 minute 4r/1w
Friday - off
Saturday - Woodstock Kiwanis 5k OR 6 mile 4r/1w
Sunday - off

Scott - you are a MAD MAN!!! You are doing so GREAT with your runs....(quote) the first few miles just flew by (end-quote) HUH?? :confused3 That's AWESOME! :yay:

Nice job on listening to your body. I'm sure your rest day did wonders for your back!

We have the same taste in TV. DH and I watch those shows you mentioned! Can't wait for WED this week!!!

Have a great week, and thanks for the Mother's Day wishes. I really appreciate that!

:thumbsup2 Scott! Holy Cow! Check out all those negative splits you ran!!!! Really, I said it before and I'll say it again, super effort AND with an injury. :woohoo: :cheer2: Sorry to hear about your back problems, back pain is so difficult to manage and yet look at you running and exercising!!!! I'm so glad to hear you have it under control and that running doesn't seem to aggrivate it too much! Can't wait to hear if you do the 5K! You're a racing machine!!! :moped:

I will definitely let you know how TnT is going. Right now all the races they are training for are too soon for me. But I am sure they'll be training for Disney...and as soon as that gets on their radar I'll get to one of the informational meetings. I'm really hoping to meet up with fellow runners and possibly have a group to train with on the weekend LRs. It's going to get lonely out there on the trails by myself soon. I have to say that I find myself looking around paranoid-like as it is now....especially when I'm on the wooded trail run portion of my LRs. I keep thinking that it's so secluded...but what am I going to do :confused3 . I give you credit for doing the 1/2 mile loop over and over again....I don't know if I could do that or track running. I need change of scenery to keep my mind occupied LOL!

Scott,

You totally amaze me! :thumbsup2 You did a great job on your running/walking and movieing (is that a word? ;) ) with free stuff this weekend! Please be sure and be careful about your back. A friend of mine had back surgery a year ago and it has taken her awhile to recover.

Have a great week! :sunny:

thanks everyone!!

On to today's entry which I'd like to call The Racing Rollercoaster....

Monday May 15th
Funny how this whole excercise thing works...it's like riding a rollercoaster at times. You work hard to get up that hill, get rewarded with some great flying airtime only to succomb to extreme sluggish g-forces that nearly immobilze you at the bottom of your descent. Then you have to go back up that hill again, this time a little faster and the whole cycle repeats itself. Just pray that there aren't any loops or corkscrews thrown in the mix :)

You know what is coming so let's get to it....I attempted a 45 minute 4r/1w on Monday after a good day of rest on Sunday. I say attempted because just past the 20 minute mark I had to throw in the towel. My legs were hurting pretty bad...calves were on fire, feet felt like cement blocks and thighs felt like noodles. It was actually a struggle to slowly walk back to the house. I haven't experienced anything like this in the near three months of training so far. I know I had a bad finish to last week, but I had such a great run on Saturday. I guess running 6 miles has a bigger impact on my body than I originally thought. For the record, here are the resulting numbers: 3.65 miles, 49:44, 13:38 avg, 180/142 HR. As mentioned that is a 4/1 for 2 miles and a near crawl for 1.65 miles.

I went to bed Monday wondering if I'd be working out at all this week....which brings us to:

Tuesday May 16th
Shockingly, I felt pretty normal when I woke up in the morning. Sure my calves were a little sore, but nothing like I imagined I'd feel like. Once I got home in the evening, I decided to head over to the fitness center and see what I could do on the elliptical. I figured that some non-impact training would not be a problem. Boy was I right. After the worst run I've ever had on Monday, I had the best cross-training ever on Tuesday. The workout seemed so easy...my heart rate didn't even climb until the last 5 minutes. I was never winded and felt strong the entire time. I ended up doing 40 minutes, 4.34 elliptical miles (9:13 avg), 167/151 HR. I jumped on the scale again for the first time in a week and came in at 214.4. It was a gain but if you would have seen what I ate over the past few days, you would be shocked that I only went up a pound.

So here we are at decision time again. I went by the Kiwanis 5k route on the way home last night and it would be my hilliest race yet but for some reason I am confident that I could do pretty good and am leaning toward running in it on Saturday. So I'll take the day off on Friday, but I'm debating on weather or not to run on Thursday or do some more cross training. I guess the cross training is the best route to me feeling the best on Saturday morning. I dunno. I'll plan on visiting Mr. Elliptical again on Wednesday and make a decision on Thursday as to what I'll do for training that day.

Have a great day everyone!

Normally, I LOVE rollercoasters....but not this week! I had the same kind of run this morning. Not good. But like you said...there'll be good and there'll be bad.

I am SURE you can and will do great in that 5K, should you decide to run it. And I agree that doing the eliptical on Thursday is probably the best idea.

Don't worry about that gain...it'll be gone. And I know what you mean about being happy it's only a pound :rolleyes1 .

Have a GREAT one, and enjoy LOST tonight! (as well as Amazing Race and American Idol!) :teeth:

Scott...

It's got to be the ALIENS...they killed our runs this week! Kim and I (and another guy over on the events board...check out my entry over there on the run/walk thread) all had the same experience this week!

Your entry sounds EXACTLY like what I experienced. I even referred to it as my running roller-coaster. WEIRD! It's not us....it's some strange phenomenon. I didn't even journal my run because I was so mad and frustrated. I set out for a 4 mile run/walk and only made just shy of 2 miles in 20 minutes yesterday. What is up?! My legs hurt, my feet barely moved off the ground and I even said to my DH that I felt like I had on cement sneakers :rotfl2: .

Hey....maybe that 6 miler this weekend kicked out butts?!?!?!

I did KBX today and did great....had a wonderful workout. So I'm in a MUCH better mood. Last night I was NOT HAPPY with myself. So this is weird....can't wait to ssee how I do tomorrow?!?!?!

Hey, Scott don't let your monday run get you down. It is your body's way of telling you to take it easy and not get hurt. Nonimpact is a good idea.

Awesome 6 miler though! Great job! :cheer2:  :cheer2:

BodyGlide is good stuff for all sorts of places - nuff said! :rotfl2:

LOL. on the TV updates. I'm pretty much all caught up now. I agree last week's Lost was sort of "huh?", but hopefully the next two episodes will be good. Might actually have to watch AR LIVE tonight since TiVo will catch Lost. Or maybe set up the VCR to record one or the other. :rotfl2:

Thanks for stopping by my journal. I appreciate the encouragement.

Hi Scott,

Don't let your Monday run get you down...like I told Amy and Kim there had to be something in the air!!! I am sure that your next run will be great

Good for you for getting to the gym and getting on the elliptical.....that is great.

Keep up the good work and have a great weekend :)

Thanks everyone for the continued support!

Offtopic - Yes, the hippies won!! Nice to see my favorite Amazing Race team of all time pulled it out in the end. Found out all kinds of neat stuff about them, including the fact that the Tyler dude walked across Japan & made a movie about it..pretty awesome! Glad to see Elliot booted from American Idol. He was my least favorite...I can appreciate all types of singers but just couldn't tolerate his vibrato thing. Looks like Taylor is gonna be our next Idol, I just can't see Kat getting the majority of votes Tuesday night. Pretty awesome sports weekend too...Barbaro (who I correctly predicted to win the Kentucky Derby) broke his leg during the Preakness in one of the most shocking and sad sights I've witnessed. Heard he is recovering well today and now has a 50/50 shot at living.....Bonds hit HR 714 to tie the Babe, I sure hope this guy doesn't come close to Hank's record - no one with his personality and cheaters attitude deserves a spot in history.

Ok, enough rambling and on to the update...

Wednesday May 17th
Hit the gym again for another elliptical workout. Our fitness center has 6 ellipticals, 4 are black and 2 are grey and all are manufactured by the same company. I found out that they differ greatly in what they report for their workout summaries. I usually use the black ones due to tv positioning and the fact that they look newer but I was forced to use a grey one on Wednesday because the black ones were taken. I had a great workout that was very similar to Tuesday's in regards to pacing. Miles were a different story. It said that I did 40:00 but covered 5.31 miles (7:32 mpm) (HR was 156/147). Now Tuesday I did 40 minutes at the same pace and covered 4.34 miles using the black machines. The only variable I noticed was that the black machines go from 1-20 on levels of difficulty while the grey ones go from 1-25. I used level 8 on the black and level 10 on the grey. So I don't know what the discrepancy is all about but know that I have to notate which machine I used in my workout log. I also stepped on the scale again and came in at 212.4.

Thursday May 18th and Friday May 19th
After a tough last week and some good elliptical workouts, I decided to give my body a full two day's rest and then try to tackle a hilly 5k on Saturday. I had not taken two days off in a row since the beginning of March, but I understood that my body would probably benefit from it.

Saturday May 20th - Woodstock Kiwanis 5k Road Race
I woke up Saturday feeling great and knew instantly that I had made the right decision on not working out Thursday & Friday. The weather was perfect...it was cloudy and surprisingly cool with the temps around 73 degrees.

The race turned out to be the smallest one I've been in so far. I don't know what the final number was but it had to be around 70 or so participants. The course was pretty tough with two pretty big hills around the 2 mile mark and no flat spots to be found anywhere. My gameplan was to start as fast as possible and get to the hills as soon as I could. I knew I'd be walking at least halfway up each one and that would slow my time down. I'd also try to run down them at a quick pace to try and minimize the time lost.

So, I did get off to a fast start. I knew I was doing pretty good because I was just behind the lead pack of runners. I shocked myself when I passed the 1 mile marker....my Polar was showing an elapsed time of 7:30. Holy cow! Either the course was marked completely wrong or I had just run the fastest mile of my life. I checked the watch again and was not mistaken. Keep this up and I'll take two days off before every race from now on :) I took a walk break at the 8 minute mark and then hit some downhills on my way to the park by the river, where the 1.5 mile turnaround was. As I passed the leaders going uphill, I noticed that all but the first 5 had slowed down to a walk on the hills. Sure enough, I followed in their footsteps and was reduced to a slow ascent coming up from the park. I passed the 2 mile mark at 18:30 before hitting the last big hill. That last hill was TOUGH but I paced myself and still had some in the tank to be able to sprint to the finish chute and a new personal best time of 28:55! My splits were 7:30/11:00/10:25. I can't tell you how happy I was to finally crush the 30 minute mark and to do it on a challenging course! Makes me want to go back and re-run the first race, knowing I could do so much better now!

Anyway I got the cool t-shirt and stuck around for the raffle where they called numbers 135,137 and 138 for the best prizes....of course you know that I was number 136 and left empty handed once again. But I did leave with the prize of knowing that I had ran my best race ever. I even convinced myself to run a 10k on Memorial Day (I was going to do the 5k) so that I can get one under my belt before the Peachtree on July 4th.

Sunday May 21st
Took another day off so that I could get my timing right for the upcoming week, leading up to the 10k on Monday. Here is what I have scheduled:

Monday - 45 min 4r/1w - neighborhood
Tuesday - 40 min elliptical
Wednesday - walk in neighborhood
Thursday - 45 min 4r/1w - neighborhood
Friday - 40 min elliptical
Saturday - off
Sunday - off
Monday - Celebrate Freedom 10k

Also found out that they've added a 5k Family Fun Run this year to the WDW Marathon weekend. It's on Friday at 7am and takes place in Disney-MGM studios! I'm definitely going to get my daughter to enter it and just run at her pace..I think it sounds like so much fun! Nice to know there is going to be such a great payoff at the end of the year for all of this training and racing. I can't wait to get there!

Hope everyone had a great weekend and a fantastic week! Ready for those Memorial Day cookouts?!?!

:jumping1: Congratulations Scott! :jumping1:

Way to go on getting your best personal time at the Woodstock 5K!!! :cheer2: That is wonderful that you were able to break the 30 minute mark and on a very hilly course! :thumbsup2 You are doing an awesome job, Scott! Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

Have a great Tuesday! :sunny:

:worship: :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

OMG, Scott!! You are da MAN!!!! :moped:

What an impressive race you ran!!! And seriously, what an amazing transformation in such a short time! You continue to improve and challenge yourself. AWESOME!!!! :yay:

I think your schedule for this week looks great!

OT - can't wait for American Idol and LOST finales this week!!! :cheer2:

Awesome run Scott!!! :thumbsup2 What a transformation you have made. You can definitely put yourself in the "runner" category!

Great idea to do the 5K with DD at WDW. It will mean so much for both of you. My dad ran Marathons and ultras the whole time I was growing up. I didn't start running until 2000. When he heard I had entered Rock and Roll (my first marathon), he signed up too and ran at my pace the whole time. It was his slowest marathon ever, but it meant so much to me that he did it with me.

Have a great time on your 10K this weekend!

:cheer2: :cheer2: Congrats on breaking the 30 minute mark! :cheer2: :cheer2:
You are doing So awesome! Give em heck Monday! :sunny:

I think the 5k at WDW w/ your daughter sounds really great! That will be a great trip report :thumbsup2

Have a great week! :hippie: Hippie's Rule! :hippie:
