If your goal is attainable and is in your sights, then why not reach out and grab it?

Scott,

Your whole post was awesome, but I just love this quote! :thumbsup2 My DH has had a tough week workwise and the goals he wants to accomplish are within sight. I'm going to share this with him. Thanks Scott! :goodvibes

That is wonderful that you are going for the Full! I KNOW you CAN do it! :cheer2:

Hope you have a great weekend! :sunny: How many days, hours, minutes, and seconds till Disney in September? ;)

Scott, you put a lot of thought into your decision and came up with the right choice for you. You are right, you're family sees all the effort you will put in to train. The actual day it is easier to just focus on what you need to do and not be co-ordinating family stuff. And you will have the WISH team for support all along the course. That will make all the difference in the world at around miles 16-21! You have shared experiences with these people and you are all going through the same thing together. That is what TNT was for me - a fabulous support team at every point on the course. Family is great, but they can only be at a couple of mile points. Enjoy your race!

Take care of your hamstring. :wizard:

Hey Scott! How awesome that you have made your decision to do the FULL MARATHON!! :cheer2: :cheer2: You are going to do Awesome! I know you will!

I love the fact that you set off on this journey and just went for it! You have done Really Great in your 5ks and 10k. And you never hesitated for a minute! :cool1: Your journey is very inspiring to me. I go back and forth and take one step forward then go back. When I read your posts and see how great you are doing it reminds me of how much I want to be on this journey too! So, THANKS for keepin on keepin on!

I Really hope your hamstring is healing!! pixiedust: pixiedust: Some pixiedust to help it along the way!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend! :sunny:

Man, it's June 6th already!! Where has this year went to?? Time flies when you're training LOL

Kim - thanks as always for your support and the motivation I get from reading your journal....make sure you are taking care of yourself.

Dena - Wow. That quote is incredible. :thumbsup2 Thank you so much for posting it in my journal! I've printed it out and it is now hanging on my wall 'o motivation (next to Amy's fortune cookie stuff lol)...and believe me, I'm grabbing this year for all it is worth. I encourage everyone to do the same thing. thanks so much!!

Tracy - Nice to know I've been quoted too!! Wishing your DH the best and hope what I said helped you guys out in any way possible. OH, and.....103 days to go! That equates to 2472 hours or 148320 minutes or 8899200 seconds! (not that I'm counting or anything :rotfl: )

Anna - thanks for scaring me about mile 16-21 JUST KIDDING! :) I'm glad to have the WISH team in support and believe me, I'll probably need it. thanks for your kind words.

Amy - Amy, Amy, Amy. :sunny: "Your dream must be bigger than your fear"...I like that one. Crossing the finish must be bigger than fearing hitting that wall. That quote transcends into real life too! Thanks for sharing. (final 2) ;)

Thanks for the support everyone! It's so great to see everyone's journals and how we've all experienced so many highs and lows....and how we've been there to pick each other up. :grouphug: Hope everyone has continued success with their goals!

On to the update...

Friday June 2nd
Another rest day. Hamstring area was still a little tight but getting a lot better. Things were a little crazy as wife was packing and getting ready for her 2 week trip to Mexico on Saturday morning.

Saturday June 3rd
Was up early to get wife to the airport. Came home and cut the grass. I felt really good so I decided to head over to the fitness center to see if I could manage a workout. It was awesome to get back to some serious exercise again. I didn't push too hard but did 3.17em in 30:00 (173/155 HR). I was a little hesitant to get on the scale after being dormant for four days but did it anyway and was shocked to see my weight was holding steady at 205.2. Talk about some motivation! Was just what I needed going into the poker game I hosted that night (won lot's of "pretzels" too!...but did overindulge in the beverages though).

Sunday June 4th
What better way to relive a minor hangover then to ride rollercoasters?!? Took daughter to Six Flags and had a great time. Every ride was a walk on and since my dad went with us, I got to ride some big rides too! (Goliath, Superman and Deja Vu for those interested...no lines on them either!) Was some good exercise to get out and walk around the park for most of the day. We also took the dog for a two mile walk later that evening

Monday June 5th
Planned to get back on track with the training program. Four short weeks remaining until the Peachtree so getting some running in was essential. During my warmup walk, my leg was feeling a bit tight again so I did a little test run and it didn't feel good at all. I figured I'd have to throw in the towel and wait another day at least to run. But on the way back inside the house, I decided to stretch it out a bunch and see if that made a difference. And it did! So I set out for a nice easy run...didn't want to push too hard and risk injury. I worked on posture and shoulders. Tried to not slouch while running and made constant efforts to relax the back of my neck (I read that that helps relax your shoulders and upper body and makes the strides much easier). It felt so good to get back out there!! I ended up covering the 3.95 miles in a good 44:55 (11:22 mpm, 196/177 HR). The high heart rate was a little concerning, but it was a little hot and the first time I had run in a week so I'll just monitor it and see what happens.

Also, I'm really starting to notice the changes in my body from the good exercise. Since the end of Feb, I've lost 17 pounds....2.5 inches around the beer keg.....went down a notch in my belt.....and my pants & shorts are all getting baggy (at least I'm starting to fit in with today's youth...baggy pants and all lol). Nice to know that all of the sweat and effort is really making a difference and I'm actually starting to feel pretty good about myself :) I keep missing ab workouts and really want to add that as part of my normal routine along with some weight training.

Anyway...hope everyone has a great day!! Thanks for reading!

Hi Scott,

WOW!!!! You did great on your run even if you were a little disappointed!!! You truly did a great job!!!
Congrats on the weight loss too!!!! That is wonderful! Glad to hear that you signed up for the full Marathon in Jan!!! You and the rest of the WISHers are going to do a great job!

Keep up the great work! Glad to hear that your starting to feel better and aren't sore!

Have a great Tuesday :)

Hi Scott :wave2:

First of all...and most importantly....I'm really glad to hear that you rested and let your leg heal up. I know it's tough to sit back and watch those training days go by without a run....but it really paid off because you had a fantastic run yesterday!! :cheer2: I'm really proud of you for listening to your body!

What a great day at Six Flags! I'm a little jealous....okay a lot jealous...that you got to hit all those coasters!!!! And can I say that you are now my hero....riding coasters with a hangover!!!!! That could constitute as an extreme sport...whatcha' gonna' do next time you have a "slight hangover"....bungee jump? LOL! j/k You rock!

Oh....and amazing job on your weight loss goals! 2.5 inches??? That's amazing! WTG :woohoo: BTW....love it

at least I'm starting to fit in with today's youth...baggy pants and all lol

All you need is to turn that baseball cap sideways....and lean back.....lean back! LOL

WOW Scott!!! Awesome run!! :moped:

Also, congrats on all you've accomplished since Feb!! 17 pounds is incredible...and 2.5 inches is amazing!! And just think about how much better you feel!! What an inspiration you are to all of us!

Enjoy your time with your DD these next couple of weeks. I know I'd prefer to go away with DH...but sometimes I selfishly like when he goes away because then I get the kids all to myself!! (and then there are the times when I wish he were home because I had enough of having the kids all to myself :rotfl2: )

Take care, and have a great week! So glad you're leg is feeling better!

/
Hey Scott-
Just checkin' in on ya. Sounds like you're doing great! Keep it up!

Run on...Run on...

Hey Scott!

You are doing a great job! :cheer2: You have accomplished a great deal in the past few months. You should be very proud of all you have done! :thumbsup2 Keep up the good work!!!!! :cheer2:

Have a great week! :sunny:

K....brace yourself....here comes a whopper for today :)

(don't say I didn't warn you! proceed with caution....)

Tuesday June 6th
Was anxious to get back on the elliptical again. I had planned to workout for 40 minutes but that turned into 45 when I was so "in the zone" that I went over 40 by mistake! Liking nice, round numbers that are divisible by 5 (even though 5 is an evil number...;)) I decided to just keep going to the 45 minute mark. All in all I did 45 minutes, 4.72em, HR was 171/151. And it was scale visit time again. I weighed in at 207.4, slightly up from last time but I believe it was due to the excessive water that I'm drinking thru the week.

So anyway, I've come to realize that this marathon quest is not going to be as much about the physical training as it is about the mental training. First off, nothing clears my mind and allows me to think like running does. I'm now to the point that it has become my outlet. Bad day at the office? Go run. Just need to sort out life's curveballs? Go run. I totally become a part of myself in a way that I've never experienced. It's just down to me, the pavement, my breathing and my mind. When everything is clicking right, it is one of the most rewarding experiences that I can imagine...and I feel that I can run forever. It is my escape from the world. It is my way to find out who I really am and what I'm really made of. Everything I've read so far refers to a marathon as being a 20 mile run and a 6.2 mile test of willpower. So what will happen when my free spirited thoughts run out...and my body wants to quit....my reserves are depleted....and it's down to my mind controlling my body thru pure will? What will happen when the legs will feel like planks, shoes like cement blocks, back like it's carrying a refridgerator...and the crowd will no longer matter as it is down to me myself and I? This is the moment I'm living for. This is what I must train for. Thru various times during my training, I'm gonna have to push myself beyond my comfort zone....test my mind...prepare it for the ultimate challenge. Once I've conquered that challenge, nothing can stop me...no one....nowhere.....for I will have become a marathon runner.

K...that was deep. :) Ok, maybe a little cheesy but with reality tv in hiatus, I've gotta post about something!

To close out today's entry...here are some fun facts...

Since I started at the end of Feb., I have exercised for 40 hours, 34 minutes and 43 seconds. I have covered 127.45 miles thru neighborhood runs, long runs and races. In a little over three months, I've ran the equivalent of 4.86 marathons.

K, done playing Mr. Thinker for the day...you may resume your normal daily routines!

thanks for reading and have a great day...

Hi Scott :wave2:

First let me say that I found your journal entry really inspiring today. Realizing that we started this journey around the same time...it was really cool to see the facts about what you've accomplished thus far. Every mile you add is building your body and preparing it for the big day :goodvibes . It's so amazing to look back at where you started.....and see how far you've come in such a short period of time. I'm really proud of you! :cheer2: It also made me stop and take the time to look back at my own accomplishments and celebrate all the successes that I've had thus far. It's been really cool travelling on this amazing journey...and it's still only the beginning! It's like watching a great TV show popcorn:: , waiting for the big finale! The big race :teeth: .

Your entries inspire me, your outlook is so positive and you really empower us all here! THANK YOU FOR THAT!!!!!

That's what I LOVE about the Wish boards...one big happy family. A big old Brady Bunch if you will! :rotfl: Thanks for keeping us motivated!!!!! I needed it today!!!!

Scott, It's official - you are a "runner" now. :cool1: It is a part of your life. WTG!
Glad the hamstring is feeling better and you are giving it the time to heal.

Yes, the mental training for a marathon is just as important as the physical training, but you will do fine. Heck, if you can ride all those coasters with a hangover, you can do anything! :rotfl2: Sorry about the 16-21 comment. I always seem to hit my "wall" early :rotfl2: I have been running for too long at that point, I'm bored and I just want to be done! By the time I get to 21 miles though, there is only a "5 miler" left and I figure what the heck! I can do that. :rotfl2:

Have a great time with DD these two weeks!

Scott~

That was a great post yesterday! :thumbsup2 Your posts are really inspiring and filled with humor. :goodvibes Have you ever thought about a career as a writer or a motivational speaker? You'd be really good at both! :goodvibes (Plus, the money you earn could be extra money for WDW! :woohoo: )

Hope you have a wonderful day today! :sunny:

Amy - Yeah, here is hoping that the race is not the "big finale" though! I hope it ends up kind of like Star Trek...you know, first one ended but then they came back with Star Trek: Next Generation to satisfy that vulcan urge. So maybe it'll be WDW Marathon 07 and then Goofy 08: WDW Marathon Next Generation. Wow, did that even make sense?!? Thanks as always for your support.

Anna - I'm gonna remember your comment while running the marathon! At mile 21 I will tell myself "only a 5 miler left, I can do it"! Thanks for the support!

Tracy - Woah....I like your thought process...raising money for WDW trips by speaking or writing!! Thanks for the very kind words, I'll let you know when my first book comes out :)

Offtopic - While I've found some awesome ways to spend my time in the wake of all of the great tv shows ending their seasons, it's nice to see some new stuff on the horizon. Fear Factor has a special reality tv stars episode on June 13th..it includes Jonathan & Victoria (Amazing Race), Fairplay and Twila (Survivor), Tana & Crag (Apprentice), Carmen and Anthony (American Idol) and The Miz and Trishelle (Real World)...may actually have to check it out....NBC has Treasure Hunters, complete with online game during the show, that looks to be pretty decent and starts June 18th...and on June 21st, we get to see who we can vote into the Big Brother house for the summer.

Now on to the small update for today, but with some exciting news!

Wednesday June 7th
Relly felt like I needed to get out there and run but I figured my leg could use the rest day and I really couldn't have fit it in anyway.

Thursday June 8th
Had about 3.87 million things on my mind and was very anxious to get home and go running. All that focus on breathing, timing and strides has a neat way of cleaning out my head (hmmm....maybe I should open up a business...instead of coming to sit on my couch and telling me your problems, I just tell you to go run and report back :)). I went to the park near my house for a change of pace. I like to do my long runs there because it is flat and the mile is well marked, plus the surface is a dirt and trail gravel mix. I received some extra motivation in the mail before the run in the way of my race packet (including number!) for the Peachtree Road Race! Anyway, I ended up running the first mile with no walk breaks. It was approximately 86 degrees out with a slight breeze so I was trying to establish a nice, easy, steady pace. I did the first mile in 9:30. From there, I went with the 4r/1w that seems to work best for me. I did feel some 'strangeness' in the back of my leg down by my knee near the end of mile 2 so I did take an extra walk break there to try and loosen it up. Other than that, I was very consistent with my splits after the first mile. They were 9:30/10:48/10:54/10:44. I covered the 4 miles in 41:56. My heart rate was real high which I thought was pretty strange...I don't know how much the heat has to do with it but it was 201 max and avg of 180. Funny, cause I didn't feel winded at any points during the run (except for the very end...for some reason, I was motivated to beat 42 minutes ;)) So I stretched and hurried back to the house to peruse my race packet.

The race packet consisted of a bunch of material, most noteably my number (#43450) and a 6 page race day instruction brochure. I started reading through it and noticed a pattern.....the whole thing is littered with warnings!! Race day will be hot...70 degree temps with 70 degree humidity....take two waters at each mile, one to drink and one to pour over your head....take advantage of misting stations at each mile.....ambulance and medics will be stationed throughout the course.....be sure to sign the back of your race number with emergency contact information in the event of an emergency....don't treat it as a race, treat it as a celebration of health....pace yourself, if you feel dizzy, nauseous, disoriented, have chills, get goosebumps, seek medical attention immediately.....um.....what exactly have I gotten myself in to?? Well, I know I've trained pretty good and I'm not out to set any records, so I'll heed the warnings and be sure to take it slow...take in the surroundings and enjoy the experience. It's still a month away but this sure did pump me up to finish out the month of June with quality runs!

Gonna do the elliptical again on Friday, take Saturday off and do a long run (6-7 miles) on Sunday morning.

I hope everyone has a great weekend! In the wake of all the great quotes floating around (Check Amy's journal to see what I mean :))...here is the best I can do today:

"If it's your limit, you can't exceed it; If you exceed it, it's not your limit."
* Andrew Poon

Sounds like you have a great plan in place to have an awesome Peachtree race!

Love your final quote.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Scott!

Love it....WDW Marathon: The Next Generation. Let's just see if I survive the first go around.

First of all, how exciting about the Peachtree. Love your number....it seems lucky to me :). But please make sure to heed all the warnings and take it easy in that heat. That's some scary stuff there :(. I just know you are going to do an awesome job and have fun.....it's a great race to prepare you for the crowds of WDW!

And I am all about the new Treasure Hunters show. Anything that involves Amazing Race style travel with secret cryptic messages is one rockin' concept! We may have to start a thread on that show alone LOL!

And great job on your 4 miler this week. EVEN if you did smoke my time you dawg ;). But you know that's what this is all about challenging, supporting and encouraging each other. Lets see how the long runs pan out this weekend LOL! Bet I beat your 6 mile time by 3 m 92 sec. OK...that might be pushing it but everyone will have to see when we post our results!! Stay tuned!!!

Final thought...."courage is grace under fire". LOL another fortune cookie :D.

Amy - ok...you win this round...you did 64:53 to my 65:21...so, um best two out of three? OR are you willing to take the "7 mile challenge" this Sunday?

Offtopic - Go see Cars! It's a pretty good movie...animation is incredible.

On to a brief update...

Friday June 9th
Stepped on the scale before working out and I went back down to 205.2 again. Although this whole thing was never about how many pounds I could lose, I have to admit that I'm a little motivated at being so close to the 200 mark and have secretly made that one of my goals :) I hit a zone again on the elliptical and ended up doing 50 minutes on it. HR was 166/153 and I felt great during the entire workout. My legs did feel it a little Friday night, but I was happy to have put that much time into it.

Saturday June 10th
I took Saturday off in preparation for Sunday morning's long run. I did take the dog for a 3 mile walk if that counts for anything.

Sunday June 11th
Long run day. I woke early (but not as early as I wanted to) so that I could beat the heat. It was supposed to get up to 95 and there is no way I'd run in those extremes. I went to the park with the dirt/gravel trail and ran surrounded by trees next to the small river. All went extrememly well until around mile 3 when the sun made it over the treeline and made over half of the loop pretty hot. So I just slowed my pace a little and tried to be consistent. I had thought about running 7 miles, but held it to 6 (if my lazy butt would have brought water, I would have went longer). My total time was 65:21 and my splits were 9:22/10:29/11:05/11:30/11:36/11:19...heart rate was 200 max and 181 average. I did the 4r/1w plan until mile three where I turned that 1w into a 1:15-1:30w.

I do have to say, there's nothing like those long runs :) It's my favorite run of the week and I'm eager to start pushing myself this fall...running 10..14...up to 20 miles at a time in preparation for the marathon in January.

This week shapes up like this (gotta change a little to time it right for the July 4 race):
Monday - off
Tuesday - 45min 4r/1w
Wednesday - 40min Elliptical
Thursday - 45min 4r/1w (my birthday!)
Friday - 40min Elliptical
Saturday - off
Sunday - 6-7 mile long run

Hope everyone had a great weekend and has a great week!

Hey Scott!

I know I have said it before, but you are doing such an amazing job! :cheer2: You have made so much progress since you started this program and you have inspired many by your progress. Way to go! Keep up the good work! :cheer2:

We're going to see Cars this evevning.... I can't wait! :Pinkbounc

Have a great day! :sunny:

Scott, good job on your long run and your great elliptical workout. You are going to do awesome for your 10k race!

Hoping to go see Cars tomorrow. We'll see how the day works out. Good to know it is getting :thumbsup2 reviews.

thanks to those who have stopped by and commented!!

Offtopic - So there is this guy named Ron Jaffe who has set out on a similar journey to what many of us are doing here on the WISH board. He was a computer guru who one day decided to get off his butt and hike the entire Appalachian Trail. If you don't know, it's a trail that goes from Georgia to Maine and is considerably grueling. He has a website www.wheresronnow.com and on that site he posts blogs as often as he can. He made an entry that I want to post in my journal. I found it incredibly inspiring and very well written...I hope you do too :) Here is an excerpt:

It's a trail - but it's so much more...

It's a damn path of dirt and rocks. It goes up and then down again. It travels through the misty forests and then on top of tree-less 'balds.' It gets rained on, baked by the sun and is strewn with rocks and roots of all shapes and sizes. It is lifeless, and yet it is alive. And it sits there day after day getting walked upon by creatures of all kinds only changing as those who tread upon it change it. But despite how seemingly lifeless this path is...it changes people.

It can take young child and fill him with wonderment and inspire him to spend his life playing in the wilderness. It can take a woman who has lived a suppressed life and show her the way to a life full of courage and self-respect. It can take an old man hardened by a difficult life and help him find sanity in a world that seems anything but sane. And it can take a "40-ish" computer geek and turn his life upside down. And that's only after 9 weeks.

The "Trail" is a mirror and one's experiences, for better or worse, reflect the individual's state of mind. One who sees the trail as an endless trail of mystery and wonderment is one who has learned to embrace this philosophy in his life. One who sees the trail as an endless string of challenges and disappointments probably perceives his world the same way. And one who walks the trail and learns nothing, probably had little ambition in the first place.

But those who gain most from the trail, in my limited perspective thus far, are the ones who dare to change their life's perspectives and become different in some way, to become better or to choose a better life for themselves. Indeed this is what I'm trying to do for myself and I must tell you it scares the hell out of me. But somehow, I find the courage to plod on knowing, or at least believing at this point, that this change, this epiphony lies somewhere up the trail.

As I mentioned in a previous blog entry that part of me is scared to death that I might struggle and fight every step of the way only to find that there is no epiphony to be found, no great lesson to be learned and so my trip will have been for naught. But another part of me has faith that this epiphony is lying in wait, somewhere inside me waiting for that flowered hillside, or mountain-filled vista or the right animal to come out.

I really hope that's the case.

The trail is a path of dirt and rocks and roots. But alas, it is so much more.

For me that trail is the one I run on...the one that leads me to the marathon. But I think the trail can be whatever you want it to be...the path you take to and from work each day, the path you follow on your quest to get healthier.

On to today's update :)

Monday June 12th
Off day!! Good news is that I felt great...no soreness or injury from the run on Sunday.

Tuesday June 13th
Did my regular neighborhood run. It was a great run...temps weren't too hot and I felt strong. I did 3.95 miles in 44:16 (11:12 mpm, 193/178 hr). I do want to work on one thing however....I seem to get winded about 5 minutes in and never really recover during the run. I was talking to my running buddy and they suggested that maybe I'm looking down when I run, thus preventing good airflow....and the more I thought about it, the more I think this may be true. I don't get short of breath at all on the elliptical and I keep about the same pace but of course I'm always looking up at the tv's or straight ahead...so I'll have to try this on the next training run.

Speaking of that run, after doing 40-50 min on the elliptical tonight, I'm gonna get up early and try to run in the morning tomorrow. It will be cooler then and will allow me to enjoy the evening (my birthday :)). I always run at night so we'll see how much better I can do in the a.m.

Hope everyone has a great day!!!
